The body of James Mayberry was found nude in his bedroom with multiple stabs wounds. A couple of blocks away, a resident finds a bag with bloody knives and a used condom. The hunt is on to find the killer. Watch the video to find out who killed James Mayberry, followed by the thought provoking commentary.
It’s great that the murderer was brought to justice. I’m sure this provided some resolution to the victim’s family, friends and the community even though it doesn’t bring James Mayberry back. Mr. Mayberry didn’t deserve to be on the receiving end of this violent attack; however his actions and choices did play a part. Why did Mr. Mayberry have so much contact and sexual encounters with men whom were violent ex-convicts and felons?
Unfortunately there are many older gay men out there that play this game. They seek out these ex-cons and develop a sort of “John / Prostitute” relationship. The older man (The John) is usually established, has a secure job, a home and other attractive resources. The (Prostitute) is usually younger, a street thug, drug dealer, an ex-con, ex-felon or parolee. The ex-con (The Prostitute) is usually not secure, meaning they don’t have stability in their life. They often times use men and women for money, food, transportation and shelter. They usually can’t or don’t maintain a decent job because of their past record and outlook. Many older gay men seek them out and consider them “Trade”. They will give them money, food and shelter in exchange for sex and companionship, thus both participants gain something for their services.
Mr. Mayberry may have been an all-around, good natured, well liked man; however it seemed like at times he went after certain types of men, the “Trade”. Word will get out that an individual has resources and is willing to part with them in exchange for ex-jailhouse dick. In this case the killer actually spoke to the victim while he was still in prison. How did the victim and the killer know each other in the first place? Were they pin-pals or known of each other through mutual ex-con acquaintances? I once read a book called Fish: A Memoir of a Boy in a Man’s Prison. In it, some inmates were having a conversation about what they will do once they are released or paroled. To summarize, one prisoner stated he will seek out a “queen” he knows on the outside and he will be their stud. That way he doesn’t have to work but just has to provide sexual services and companionship because the queen will give him money and supply room and board. This is a very serious and dangerous game that these men (The Johns) are willingly to play.
Why are so many gay men (regardless of age) attracted to criminals, drug dealers, thugs, ex-cons and felons? Is it a thrill or simply being intrigued by the “bad boy” image? Is the thinking “I can change/fix him” or it is something else? Are older gay men of the mindset that because of “ageism” within the gay community, that ex-cons are the only companionship they can get?
