TMZ has reported that handsome 29-year-old actor Lee Thompson Young was found dead of an apparent suicide this morning after not coming in to work on his hit TNT series, Rizzoli & Isles. Many of you may remember him as the child star on the Disney channel series, “The Famous Jett Jackson” and as an adult in the 2004 film “Friday Night Lights.”
We also highlighted Young on our list of The Top 15 Young Actors Who Grew Up In A Major Way, he came in at #2 on our list as the sexiest young black former child actors in the industry.
Young was found dead in his apartment by his landlord of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Lee’s publicist said, “It is with great sadness that I announce that Lee Thompson Young tragically took his own life this morning…Lee was more than just a brilliant young actor, he was a wonderful and gentle soul who will be truly missed.”
This really shows you that no matter how successful, rich, sexy, famous or in-shape a person is, that exterior stuff can not fix internal issues we have. This is something we often see in the gay community where many depressed men with low self esteem think that being thinner, more attractive or having more money and trendy clothing/accessories will be the answer to whatever troubles they are going through.
We have preached there is no shame in seeking therapy if any of you have issues. Also, if you feel that a family member or friend is going through something, don’t hesitate to be an open, non-judgmental ear for them to speak to…sometimes just verbalizing internal issues makes them better to deal with.
We may have opinions on this website that some people don’t agree with, but we always welcome any and everyone to add their viewpoints to the conversation. We’re a community within a community within an even larger community…If we can help in any way, we’ll do our best to try.
If any of you want to reach out to myself, Nick Delmacy, or Ocky Williams through message or email for advice or just to help guide you to others that can help, do not hesitate. Over the last two years we have received emails from gay men both young and old seeking advice and have never felt burdened. We’ve also published quite a few articles on the subject of mental health as well.

He was so handsome and such a good actor. I think I remember he played in a disney role. Jett Jackson or something like that. It is so sad that many black men still don’t seek the help of a therapist or counselor. Ocky and Nick, please continue your work reporting the importance of Mental Health help for black men. It is so important and I’m saying that from experience. The hyper-masculine world we put ourselves in is fruitless and unforgiving. It’s bad enough being black and gay, but when you have such strong insecurities who knows what may be going through one’s mind. I encourage any brother to seek help even if its someone unbiased to talk to through an 800 number. Talking about your problems can help you get to a solution. Fuck what anyone else thinks or says about it. Take it from someone who knows. I’m stepping down now from the soap box. I am truly hurt by this news. So young. So dam young. Smdh
OMG. I am so shocked. But it goes to show you that you never know what someone is going through.
Yeah no doubt: this is tragic; I do identify, through my own experience, with the psychological struggles that can lead a person to make such a decision. Influences that lead you to consider such actions can be seductive and overwhelming.
Regardless, I want to give big credit to CA/DC for being so consistently insightful and proactive on bringing attention to mental health (which, in my experience, is still largely taboo in American culture). It is a real public service.
Mr. Young’s death is tragic and sobering. I’m not a big believer in turning something bad into something good, but let’s hope such events at least open a broader discourse/raise awareness. But still, those are some tired words.
My heart breaks for this young man.. one can only imagine the pain he was suffering through behind the beautiful smile.
In sad awe 🙁
Like WTF…u had stuff goin well in the celebrity aspect. What coulda pushed u to that point? I’d just wanna kno why.
Hell, he even coulda at least left a note or sum’n..that’s the way I used to think….*sigh*
I just had to come back to this story and stare at this dude as my heart continues to bleed. I’ve battled depression in my teen years and as an adult, so I understand how life can take you into those pits and valleys.
I remember watching him on Smallville and other TV shows. He was one of the good guys.
If it was Chris Brown all of the internet would have been shut down, and fat black females and thirsty fags would have marched in the streets with candle sticks. This is proof that God doesn’t exist!
i think ppl are so upset because we didn’t see it coming. we look at white entertainers like sheen, lohan, spears, etc, etc, and their crazy is front and center but they just keep on ticking. this guy hid his problems (if any very well) that’s why i don’t believe he killed himself. my little sis is always talking about the “illumanati” and for once instead of rolling my eyes and telling her to shut up have have to say that’s way more believable than suicide.
He was One of my fav since child hood and still is who will ever forgetthe best of Mr lee may he s.I.p
