What made you want to get in shape?
I was like this before I became famous. I was all about health and wellness but you go through phases. I was going through some deep shit so I just let myself go and wanted to indulge and be a part of the community and America. So I started hanging out and doing what Americans do. I became a product of my environment. You guys wanna indulge? Let's fucking indulge. What else were we gonna do?
After a while it becomes—Okay, I see everyone in this space took that way out. Now let’s see if we can get it moving. Let’s see if we can do something besides just turning up and getting drunk and eating all this shit. If I showed up at first, and was like, "Hell yeah lets go workout! Let’s go do this!" It would be like "What the fuck? We can't relate to you."
No one wants to be the weird fitness rapper.
Yeah! There's nothing relatable to you. I'm just relatable to everybody. This is a part of my job now. I have to be on stage to entertain my fans for 45 minutes and it's like ya'll want me to be out of breath in 15 minutes?
What is your workout routine?
It's really just jumping up and down on stage. And eating foods that I know are not gonna make me tired while I'm on stage and after.
But when I'm not about to go on, I'll have whatever I want to eat. Hot wings, whatever. I'm always moving. I barely even rest anymore. My whole lifestyle is different. While everybody is still sleeping, I'm up. I can’t even tell anybody what it is, it’s something that you have to get accustomed to your body and figure out. Just put that time into yourself. That's all it takes.
But nobody wants to put in the time. They want Makonnen to give them a thing and it's like ‘oof yeah I got it.’ It's been eight months. Oh you see an Instagram picture now and think I did it overnight but no, it's been eight months of going through a different lifestyle.
FULL INTERVIEW: Damn, Makonnen

Savory Coconut Flour Zucchini Bread
Coconut Flour Zucchini Bread (Paleo!)
Ingredients
- 6 pastured eggs
- 1/2 cup melted butter or coconut oil
- 1/2 tsp. Celtic sea salt, plus more for sprinkling
- 3/4 cup coconut flour (I recommend this one) (Don't pack the coconut flour into the measuring cup. Scoop it with your measuring cup then level off the top with a knife - the "dip and sweep" method)
- 2 cups shredded zucchini
- 1 Tbsp fresh thyme
- 1/2 tsp. organic garlic powder
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 2 tsp. apple cider vinegar
- Mix the eggs, butter or coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, and zucchini.
- In a separate bowl, mix the coconut flour, sea salt, thyme, garlic powder, and baking soda.
- Pour the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix to combine
- Pour into a greased loaf pan that has been lined with parchment paper and sprinkle the top with sea salt.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes or until cooked through.Allow to cool completely before serving.

Malachai Jenkins and Roberto Smith at one point would’ve never saw eye-to-eye. Both LA natives pledged their allegiance to rival gang members, Jenkins a Crip and Smith a member of the Bloods. But after years of gang banging, Jenkins grew tired of the dangerous life.
“All money isn’t good money, Jenkins said. “[Selling drugs] worked for me for a little while until it started to get me into trouble, so I had to find something legit to do.”
A mutual friend introduced Jenkins to Smith and the two became fast comrades. Jenkins then enrolled in the famed culinary school Le Cordon Bleu, and from there things began to change. Upon finishing his courses, Jenkins, who also goes by the name Chef Spanky, began cooking meals and posting the finishing product on Instagram. Soon, people started placing orders and slowly, their catering business Trap Kitchen LA was birthed.
“The gang stuff, the shootings, now that I’m in this kitchen, I don’t go through none of that,” Smith said.
The way it works is Jenkins puts the daily menu on Instagram and people then place their orders. The men make everything from the simple yet comforting chicken and waffle,s to the popular and more decadent $25 Pineapple Friday dish which is made up of King Crab, lobster, jumbo shrimp and salmon over white rice covered in Teriyaki Sriracha sesame seeds and green onions placed inside an actual pineapple. Whatever your stomach desires, the gentlemen of Trap Kitchen LA will serve you.
“You can make the same amount of money selling drugs, selling food,” Jenkins said.

I have. DO NOT PURCHASE pre-made "smoothies" at all. Things like Naked and Bottlehouse have an extremely high amount of sugar, more than soda, and isn't truly natural as I hope most know. That defeats the purpose of having a health drink. If you're going to do it make it yourself and something I do is add ground or powdered Chia.Dr. Strange, grownman, Nigerian Prince and 1 other person dapped this. -

I applaud your decision to take care of yourself, eat healthy, and to get back in shape. I've a had a similar journey. I've been skinny most of my life. I got in shape when I was in my 20s while I was in the armed forces. At 5'10" I went from a scrawny 130lbs to a fit 165lbs and hovered between 165 - 170 depending on what I ate. After I got out of the military at 29 I got lazy, stopped working out. My weight dropped back down to 140lbs until I turned 36 then all of a sudden I started getting pudgy. My weight went from 140 to 176. I wasn't obese or anything but I didn't like the way I looked. That just didn't sit well with me. I became determined not to be one of those dudes who just let's themselves go after a certain age. I cut out soda, junk food, and alcohol. Started eating fruits and vegetables as well as lifting weights again eventually I got back in shape. At the age I am now, 41 I'm in better shape than when I was in my 20s. It's not too late it just takes discipline and determination. Once you start seeing results that helps motivate you to keep going. You really have to avoid sugar, especially high fructose corn syrup at all costs! HFCS is in almost every processed food and in most beverages. That's why I drink mostly water. You gotta get in the habit of reading labels to see what the ingredients are and how many grams of sugar it has per serving. For a man that is not overweight you're not supposed consume more than 37.5 g of sugar per day if you're trying to loose weight you gotta consume less.

I support you and your efforts. Staying motivated is the challenge though I know that you can do it especially when you want it bad enough. Also, nutrition and what's going into your vessel is equally as important. 8 glasses of water, no processed foods and fried meats, fresh greens and fruits and exercisers least an hour 5x a week. You got this, bro. It took a year for me to lose 75 lbs (yes, that weight crept on over time and when it became a concern I decided to do something about it) and have successfully kept it off now for 3 months. Again, you have this. If I get 10 + daps I'll post a pic to quench any thrist. Jaja.Winston Smith, Nigerian Prince, Nick Delmacy and 1 other person dapped this. -

Part of my lack of confidence in some areas is because I'm heavier than I'd like to be. As an endomorph, I have to sweat to drop weight. However currently I have prioritized weight lifting over Cardio. I literally would need Two A Days to drop weight but I have trouble finding the time at the moment.
Working studying commuting all take so much time Out of my day. But I definitely can find pockets of time where I can get that extra workouts in.
I could plan better as far as getting my clothes ironed for the week ahead of time. That's one area I know I could work on for better time management.
Meal prep is meh for me because I get bored easily eating the same things. After 2 days I'm good. I do make more than I eat and just freeze it for later
Carbs are a weakness but I'm 3 months Oreo free. Chips I'll eat on occasion.
Alcohol is a non issue as that's not a vice. If you give me a plate of pasta or a Tom Collins (hey it's my drink of choice sue me hoe ) I'm taking the pasta.Nigerian Prince, Winston Smith, Nick Delmacy and 1 other person dapped this. -

@Nick Delmacy great post. I'm probably an inch taller than you and I'm at 208lbs now. For the last 5 years or so, i've maintained my weight at 185-190 so i definitely feel the 18 pounds. I've lost 7lbs already. The funny thing is, when i was younger, my weight would fluctuate dramatically from 265lbs upon high school graduation to 165lbs when i graduated college. Both were extremes and I never wanna get back to those. The problem is i've found it harder to lose weight now than I did 10 years ago. I'm a runner so i can run 3 miles a day with no problem but i fractured a toe over a week ago and haven't been able to do that. I know a lot of people live by meal prepping and I can see how that works. I encourage anyone to give it a try. My weakness is sweets. What i did was not buy any to stock at my place. NONE. I haven't really missed it. Every once and a while I get a weakness but there is nothing here to snack on so the urge goes away. It's all mental.
Even though I still get complimented on my shape while dressed, I know that i've gained weight, definitely in the mid-section area. The narrow waist is gone. LOL My goal is to get back to 195. Once i start back doing what i love, jogging, I know the weight will come off. So my suggestions, for anyone who cares, are:
1. Refrain from stocking unhealthy things in your home if possible. This includes, junk food, alcohol, soft drinks, etc.
2. Find fun activities, OUTSIDE OF THE GYM, that you enjoy and that burn calories. I jog the neighborhood, different paths,
play tennis and racquetball. All are good workouts but they don't feel like workouts because i'm not in the GYM.
3. Try and exercise on your lunch break to avoid over eating and lounging. My company's campus has a nice track with
a pond and it's really peaceful and allows me to get in a good jog or walk, while at work, in case i'm busy after work.
4. Find people who are fun to jog, run, workout with to make it fun and social. It's good to have someone to push you
and hold you accountable for missing workouts. Trust me, it's embarrassing when my jogging partner calls me twice
because i'm trying to skip out on a run.
These things have really helped me maintain my weight, until recently, but once i'm fully healthy again, i'm back on it.Cyrus-Brooks, Winston Smith, Nick Delmacy and 1 other person dapped this. -

All of this!! Wine is my very real problem. I have gained nearly 50 pounds from 22 to 32 years old. I am 6'0" and when I started my military service I was 130 pounds. I was skinny. I bulked up because of the military exercise regimen. I plateaued at 150. Really solid nice looking body. Over the past decade and several jobs where I was not particularly active, I hover between 180 and 190.
I recently started a fitness program and started sitting less at work and drinking more water. I totally eliminated soda and sweet tea (my kryptonite). I started to develop some health issues, primarily acid reflux and heartburn. The doctor told me it was diet and weight. Now, I am working slowly but deliberately to restore some balance. The problem is I love wine. I am a wino. I know its a problem don't judge me.
You are right though about men not talking about weight I think it is important particularly in the black men category because we are dying young by ignoring how weight affects our health outcomes.Cyrus-Brooks, SB3, Winston Smith and 1 other person dapped this. -

Food isn’t “black or white”. I have referenced documentaries, etc. that show people who eat tradition ethnic foods tend to be better off. The key point is avoiding modern processed food and sugar, regardless of race. And a lot of “soul food” is just pure garbage (chitlins being Exhibit A). You don’t see Jewish people celebrating the foods they were fed at Dachau and Auschwitz in the Holocaust, so I don’t know why black folk continually celebrate the shit scraps, like neck bones, that were forced on us in slavery and Jim Crow as “soulful”. I’d rather eat “white food” than culturally sanctioned garbage any day of the week: Greek, Italian, Spanish, Indian, Ethiopian, Thai, etc.
Finally, I don’t necessarily buy the food desert argument. Some of it is political. For example, white liberals, loudmouthed black protestors, and self-righteous politicos in Chicago fought against “big box” stores like Walmart coming into the city’s poor neighborhoods with cheaper, better produce while at the same time crying about “food deserts”...all the while white neighborhoods got various stores like Whole Foods, Costco, and other conglomerates that somehow weren’t “big box”. If food deserts exist it’s because idiot politicians and activists created them in the first place in the name of do-gooder “anti-capitalism” and zoning.
Unless you’re elderly or disabled, in bigger cities like NYC and Chicago, you have mass transit which, while inconvenient, can take you out of your hood to better stores. My mother has done this all her life, which is why I always thought “food desert” was spurious. If you’re not immobile, you eat bad food because you WANT to eat bad food...also bad habits. Used to get disgusted (when I was younger and tutored kids) at black parents who let their kids get “breakfast” at a package store on the way to school, i.e. pop and chips.
We have to stop with the victim mentality at some point. You’ve always been able to buy seeds with food stamps, for example, so you could easily grow a few things like tomatoes or peppers (depending on your locale) with just a window box or small plot of yard. With all the useless black churches littering our neighborhoods, old Rev. Pigfoot doesn’t know how to marshal and organize resources, use the church bus or van, and do caravans of inner city parishioners to good shopping centers with better produce?alton, Lancer, ControlledXaos and 1 other person dapped this. -

There are tons of misconceptions surrounding weight loss methods. Don't fall victim to these common mistakes.
The 7 Worst Things You Can Do When You're Trying to Lose Weight
Here's the problem with diets: More often than not, they're too hard or unhealthy to sustain in the long run, and too frequently they end in weight gain—a fraction of what you lost; or worse, even more flab sloshing around your midsection.
Because here's the truth: "Research on people who have lost weight and kept it off from the National Weight Control RegistryOpens a New Window. demonstrates that weight loss requires adopting permanent changes in what you eat, how you eat, and other behavioral changes that require taking a hard look at your where you get your foods (home prepared or eaten out) and how well you prioritize eating often enough to keep impulse eating under control," says Hillary WrightOpens a New Window., MEd, R.D.
Men and women are more apt to look at quick-fix diets to remedy their weight problems, though. Because of this, we asked Wright to highlight the worst behaviors and habits that will prevent you from losing weight for good.
1 of 7
Fasting Too Frequently
Fasting before a cheat meal can have a remarkable impact on your ability to lose weight and drop body fat because the calorie deficit changes levels of leptin, your satiety hormone. (For more information, check out Cheat Meal Strategies for Weight Loss and Muscle GainsOpens a New Window..)
But if you're fasting for long periods during the day, and this happens frequently throughout the week, you're in trouble. "This type of fasting will lead to muscle loss and likely over-eating later in the evening in response to being over-hungry," Wright says.
2 of 7
Living on a Crazy-strict Cleanse
"Cleansing" and other restrictive "detox" plans can seem like a load of B.S. when it comes to their lofty promises. Some might have an uplifting effect—leaving you feeling lighter, more energized, and thinner. Others, though, can cause severe headaches, dehydration, nausea, or worse. "The most effective way to 'cleanse' or 'detox' is to take advantage of your body's natural means of detoxification, which relies on loading your diet with lots of whole fruits and vegetables," Wright says. Not only is this a safer way to remove toxins, but it'll save you the psychological and physical pain of skipping meals or eating too minimally. "Aim for five to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables per day," Wright adds. This will help keep you full for a longer period of time and make eating fewer calories far easier.
3 of 7
Popping Diet Pills
Companies claim these magical pills help with weight loss, but there's not much merit—or science—to back it up. "And aside from not having evidence they lead to lasting weight loss, supplements often contain stimulants which may be potentially harmful especially for those with a history or risk for heart problems," Wright says.
4 of 7
Cutting Entire Food Categories
Neglecting to eat or over-restricting an entire category of food, unless you have an allergy, is usually a bad idea. Carbs are often enemy #1 on the list for fit guys, but there's no reason you have to cut them out entirely. "Carbs are the primary source of fuel for the body, so over-restricting them can leave you feeling drained and irritable," Wright says. Aside from regulating your mood, carbs are crucial to your brain's health. The human brain uses up to 25 percent of the body's energy budget and up to 60 percent of blood glucose, so it pays to keep the right kind of carbs in your diet, according to a study150806 qrb hardy et al paleo diet.htmlOpens a New Window. from the University of Chicago. "The type and quality of carbohydrates matters, so limiting your choices to whole fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and low-fat dairy helps you get the nutrients you need for good health and provide the feeling of fullness you won't get from consuming processed carbs like white flour foods, sweets, soda, and processed snack foods," she adds.
5 of 7
Using Liquid Meal Replacements
No one's denying shakes and smoothies are helpful in curbing hunger when you can't sit down to an actual meal. Liquid meal replacements are nutritious (if you have the right ingredients), but they’re not something you should be eating in place of breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the regular. Wright adds, "Relying on them to help you control your calories is an unsustainable way to manage your calorie intake, and rarely leads to lasting weight loss." Essentially, if you're drinking shakes because you're trying to keep your portions in check or hate cooking on your own, you're not going to develop healthy life-long habits that'll last. You're also lacking the fiber and certain nutrients from whole fruits and vegetables that are diminished in the making of shakes.
6 of 7
Relying Entirely on Exercise
You'll hear tons of guys say they hit the gym religiously, but dieting? That's not for them. (They're probably also in their 20s.) But to really make an impact on your weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle, you need to change your activity levels and your diet. "Exercise lowers blood sugar levels, which is one of its many health benefits, but if done to an extreme—particularly in a setting of restricted food intake—it can result in rebound over-eating later in the day as your body attempts to restock its fuel sources," Wright says. The key to producing the calorie deficit you need to consistently lose weight is to balance two things: a sustainable exercise routine and meal plan that's mostly plant-based to regularly manage hunger levels.
7 of 7
Mentally Beating Yourself Up
It's all too easy to look in the mirror and get frustrated, which sends you into a spiral of, well, not going to the gym anymore. We've all been there—yes, even the ripped guy in the corner of your gym who just cranked out his fifth set of windshield wipersOpens a New Window.. But buck up, champ: Fitness is a lifelong commitment, and it's a process. Mr. Ripped Guy will definitely tell you as much. So try not to focus too much on the physique right off the bat, and try to channel your energy toward making sure you hit the goals you set for yourself. Put that energy to positive use, rather than getting anxious about how you look in a tank top.
