After reading @Champagne_Papi 's barber shop thread, it got me to thinking. For the last few years, there has been a lot of outcry from black hair dressers and salon owners about losing their customer bases to Dominican salons. Here in NYC, all 5 boros, Dominican salons and barber shops are all over the place, and quite frankly, running the show.

I grew up going to the same barber (who was my sister's bf's bff...and we're now fb friends and he's still so fine..but i digress) from abt 10 yrs old until I went away to college (and when I came home on breaks). My point, is that I grew up immersed and loving the black barber shop experience. I remember plenty of times having to take a pause on my cut because these fools had me rollin and abt to get my head gashed up. However, once I moved to NY, and experienced my first Dominican barber, I never looked back (well, until I started shaving my head).

They're a very 'pretty boy' culture, in general. So they transfer that to you when you're in their chair. They will have u faded, shaved/bearded, straight razor'd, lined up, n fly in under 30 mins. My last barber, who I drove way across Brooklyn for, used to cut my hair while drinking a Corona. Dead serious!

Now, my question is, given what we know about Dominican's and race, should the fact that they're taking over large portions of the black hair care industry be an issue? As recently as last year (to my knowledge) many black ppl were boycotting travel to DR because of it's racist history. And I know first hand that the Dominican American's bring the same ideals here. They feel that black is American, and if one Dominican calls another black, it's definitely an insult.

Should something seemingly as insignificant as 'hair' be an issue, even if it's a multi-million (?) dollar industry? White people aren't flocking to Dominicans (typically), it's black people, the same people with whom Dominicans don't want any association. Is this rather trivial, or is this another instance in which, black people should 'ideally' take their $$$ back?

Dude, we have to be very careful with generalizations. I know maaaany Dominicans, my best friend on this earth is Dominican. They {the ones I know} range from white to black. There's a small few, maybe 2 out of the 20+ that I'm close with, that have that racist mentality, but the rest of them have no issue being referred to as black, even the "white" ones. There ARE racist Dominicans of all shades, just like there are Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Trini, Guyanese etc etc of all shades that are racially prejudiced as well, but it's unfair to slap that generalization onto an entire ethnic group, bro. Just like it's unfair to slap generalizations on the entire Black American ethnic group. By that logic I could say..."Given what we know about black men's feelings about gay people, should we continue to go to black barbershops?" The WHOLE Caribbean has a horrible racist history, not just the two and a half Spanish islands in it. So muhf@kaz boycotting D.R. should have a few seats, because if we gonna go that route then they shouldn't travel NO WHERE in the Caribbean or Central/South America. Sorry if I'm comin' across as pissy, Bro, but I get a lil tight when people nonchalantly label an entire group with the actions of a few.

Now...on to the actual topic. LOL My barber is Dominican. Matter fact, all 3 of my barbers have been Dominican, but that's mainly because there are NO black barbers in my neighborhood what-so-ever. But, I also don't think that Dominicans purposely settin' up shop in Black neighborhoods across the U.S. to systematically take over the hair game LOL. They are in predominately Latino neighborhoods. So, if muhf@kaz are leaving their own neighborhoods and going to THEM, then is that their fault? People will spend their money on what they deem "quality" product.

Side note...A lot of that "Pretty Boy culture" you mentioned regarding Dominicans is related to the ones that were either born here (NYC/NJ/CT area), or have been traveling back and forth from D.R. to here for a hot minute and became acclimated to the NYC/American mentality & environment before they got here permanently. Damn near all the ones I know were born in D.R. and spent the better part of their lives there, so they tend to be very humble people and not into the racial/ Americanized B.S. that the other muhf$kaz have fallen into. Shit, my best friend and his family don't even have the hatred to Haitians that some Dominicans have. LOL

I never blamed the Dominicans for taking over hair. No1 forced me to drive to Bushwick every monday to go see my mans. More importantly, I think it's clear that ur really partial to this topic, and might be treating it as if I implied that there can't be exceptions to the rule. We know all white ppl aren't ______, but if ur making a point about something that has historically applied to a group of ppl, you don't stop to say (i know not ALL of you are bad). That's just kinda implied from common sense.

And trust me, I'm no stranger to Dominicans. Trust me.

I get it, Bro, and please don't take my commentary as "harsh" or "This B!tch is TUH-RYIN' it HUNTEY!" LMAO. It may just be the "Libra" in me, but I always try and see things from both sides, and generalizations are one of my biggest pet peeves. Mainly because I was INFAMOUS for generalizing entire groups based off 2 or 3 people, when I was younger, but I learned real quick that wasn't the way to look at things. (I still have to catch myself from time to time) Regarding your point, one would think that matters concerning ethnicity and the good/bad points associated with a group of people would be automatically subject to common sense and not discerned as applying to the entire group, but unfortunately they don't. If they did we wouldn't have the issues we have right here in our own country. smh As far as the point about the hair thing, I'm just saying, if people have an issue with Dominicans' perceived domination of the hair game, then they may wanna step up their own game to compete...That's all. LOL

Yea, my point wasn't to deny their skills. Hell, i was inadvertently, half way playing my own devil's advocate. I had only Dominican barbers for that same reason. And its why sooo many black women go to their salons. This was just food for thought, that even ppl who live in Des Moines could chime in on, without possibly ever having seen a Dominican.

"This was just food for thought, that even ppl who live in Des Moines could chime in on, without possibly ever having seen a Dominican"
LOL!! So now I have to play Devil's Advocate. Hypothetically, if someone in Des Moines, Idaho, who NEEEEEVER saw or interacted with a Dominican person, were to read your article...what do you think they would think of Domincans as a whole, Bro? LOL The same thing that that person from Des Moines who has neeeever interacted with a black person probably thinks about all of us. LOL

And yes, I hear PUH LENTY of Black women talkin' bout..."I'm bout to go hit up the DUHMENICUNS and get my sh!t wrapped gurl!!" My close friend from back in the day, Dominica was one. And that was at the start of the Dominican Hair Salon popularity lmao

The reality is that I didnt write an article. I wrote a post. On a topic. One that made me think right quick.

Any person in des moines seein my post on ca, (while great for nick n ocky) isnt realistic in the world of research having consistently explored racial attitudes in places like dr, n brazil. We could include pr in this convo also, but pr mofos have been arnd long enough to know wasup.

As a fly over state native, all you see are black salons for black people with Korean owned beauty stores. The lack of Dominican residents probably is a reason why. Plus these southern black girls still like asymmetric salt and Pepa hair styles and "waterfalls" even in 2016.

Get to Atlanta and there's plenty of Dominican salons all over. As person who doesn't go to Barber shops, this is something new to me.

The questions would be why do black people not support other blacks in business and when there are black owned businesses, why don't those owners invest back into their businesses?

Black people have historically been THE ABSOLUTE WORST when it comes to supporting each other. I feel like those of us w the means to support, often approach the idea w 'lowered expectations' (come on madtv). However, that's a blanket statement that has really held support for many black businesses back.

I'll personally go a bit outside of my way, and even pay a few more $ to support a black owned business, simply based on wanting to see them remain...if the product is good. But, I also don't approach, waiting to chip away at the biz and find a reason to drag another 'blk' place.

Well, if I find a black owned business, I will go to it. But I does upset me when I see a business owner with a nice new truck and rims but their business looks like it hasn't been updated since 1998. You need to put those improvements to match up to Logan and Maley's businesses.

Most Dominicans do not like being referred to as black. Thats not so much a generalization but simply a common thread in most Caribbean Latino cultures. Dominicans and Race: Don't Call Them Black! - In my experience which has been only in the collegiate setting several Dominican students were invited to join our black student union when I was president and emphatically declared they arent black and were insulted by the offer. Last year they exiled all of their more purely African appearing and Dominicans that have Haitian roots, which clearly is common because they are on the same island, out of their homes, schools, businesses, and political post. Most all people of power in the country identify as "white" although clearly that's not the case. Skin bleaching is common among the culture. Clearly there is some disconnect culturally with their blackness of which they only seem to claim when calling people nigga. I have only known one afro-latino person that preferred just being called black.
