“American Idol” runner-up La’Porsha Renae has angered fans after declaring that she “doesn’t agree” with the LGBT “lifestyle” in a recent interview.

The 22-year-old singer, who lost to Trent Harmon on the final season of “Idol,” was asked for her thoughts on Mississippi’s controversial House Bill 1523, which allows people with faith-based objections to deny wedding services to same-sex couples, in an April 8 conference call with reporters. The “Religious Liberty” bill, which Gov. Phil Bryant signed into law on April 5, also permits employers to cite their religious convictions when determining workplace policies on dress code and restroom access.

Renae, who is a Mississippi native, told reporters that she hadn’t “heard about” HB 1523, noting that she was planning to leave the state to “start over” with her daughter, Nayalee Keya, Billboard reports.

She went on to say, “Although all of us may not agree with that particular lifestyle for religious reasons, whatever the reason is, you still treat each other with respect. Everybody is a human being. We should be able to coexist with one another.”

But Renae, who has landed a recording deal with Big Machine Records, didn’t stop there.

“I am one of the people who don’t really agree with that lifestyle. I wasn’t brought up that way. It wasn’t how I was raised,” Renae said. The singer went on to disclose that she has “a lot of friends and a lot of people that I love dearly who are gay and homosexual and they’re such sweet, nice people.”

She then added, “We should just respect each other’s differences and opinions and move on.”

Renae’s remarks quickly sparked a firestorm of criticism on social media. Among those to blast the comments was LGBT journalist Itay Hod who wrote:

The star tweeted a response to the backlash on April 8.

In an email to The Huffington Post, a representative said that Renae had no additional comment, but sent a link to her Sunday Periscope chat in which the singer addressed the controversy.

“I can understand when I read it back why people were offended and for that I deeply apologize because I wasn’t trying to offend anyone by what I said, I was just trying to honestly answer a question that actually caught me off-guard,” she said in the chat. “It was supposed to be an interview about singing, and it became political and I’m not a political person, at all.”

Uh oh see she know she don def just fu** her sh** up lol:ufdup: You cant be in the music industry which is run, supported and staffed with gay people and not support them. She must not know about all the gay PR people, brand/marketing people, hair stylist, makeup artist, clothing stylist, creative directors, blogs/vlogs.etc that run the industry and keep it afloat. Hell many rnb artist that cant make it main stream are still able to still get paid by doing black gay pride shows. She should of keep her answer short and sweet. She goin learn today lol.:khart1:

So does that mean she's a single mother? A lifestyle choice that others aren't also so fond of.
I know a lot of baby mam's that are such sweet, nice people too.

I think she is gonna appeal to a more Jill Scott audience anyway. Jilly don't like the geys that much either and she doing fine. Also...many younger black gay people really don't care about stuff like this. Chris Brown is a favorite artist of many black gay boys/men.

I didn't know that about Jill, either. In the end she's entitled to her opinion. I'm not a fan of flamboyant, gay men, flat front dress shoes, nor Chinese food...who cares. Long as I'm not bad mouthin' or beatin up old fashioned queens at the local Xing Ming Garden, who gives a f#$k LOL. Its just my little opinion out of millions. As far as her being a part of the gay populated music industry, there are PUH LENTY of people in the industry that don't agree with homosexual lifestyles, ranging from "eh, I don like it but it don't affect me so its whatever" to "nah son, I 'on want that f@#kin homo sh!t around me, cuz" so that's pretty irrelevant. She will appeal to a certain fan base and that's that, and if she's any good muhfuk@z wont care one way or the other what her feelings about The Gays are..

She's stupid for answering the question, but that's because she doesn't understand PR until now. And as a single parent either who never married or is divorced, she's extra stupid (And Jill Scott, if she feels the same way).

People should stop asking entertainers and celebrities about political shit to expect a politically correct response.

    Bitch just sing.

"People should stop asking entertainers and celebrities about political shyt to expect a politically correct response."

More than half the time they're not expecting a politically correct response They do it because they know the person is gonna give a "stupid' answer and that generates buzz/drama, which generates ratings for their platform, which generates money for the company(s).

I feel bad for all the gay dudes that cheered her on and voted for her. As far as Chris Brown, he's never said anything that offended me. In alot of ways I feel people who literally say that they don't agree with homosexuality are worse than people who occasionally use homphobic slurs like f*g when heated. Sometimes they use it as an insult to a specific person, than as an affront to a group of people. See Kobe Bryant. Its no excuse but we all know Kobe ain't homophobic. And I don't believe that whole Chris Brown gay pride fiasco.

Well once she gets out and sees the world outside of little McComb Mississippi she'll be fine. People change and grow. She's still young even though she looks about 30.

The uproar that this has caused in the community completely baffled me. How many gays eat at Chic fil a, buy clothes out of urban outfitters, work at companies that denounce anything gay , and sit and pay tithes in church while listening to the pastor send them to hell.
