I plan to do some traveling over the next couple of years, deciding where to permanently "cast down my bucket." I love my job and make the most money in it I've ever made...but I absolutely hate the city it's in. I keep telling myself I don't belong here because the people here are one type of personality and I'm another. I often think cities collectively have "personalities" and people contribute to the personality of their city, consciously or unconsciously.

Do you think cities have collective personalities, where certain types of individuals fit in to the communal environment, or is it more of what a person brings in attitude to the town?

I have certainly felt the same way living in Seattle and I thought I was just imagining things. like you, I believe cities do have "personalities" and every new inhabitant usually gets sucked into that city's "herd mentality" sooner or later. You have to be careful to not cross that fine line between a city's personality and its "stereotypes", though.

I do think cities have something...maybe you can call it 'personality'. This city (Columbus) is actually known for not having a personality. Most cities conjure up some image, right? But Columbus is just a big ??? It used to be football, but with a city of 835,000 with another million in the suburbs, it is too big for that. Probably why it is a good test city-if it works, here, it will work anywhere. It is just very 'average'. It needs to get some image or 'personality' because the area is adding over 25,000 people a year and is the only reason Ohio is not losing population.

Hell yeah they have a "Personality". NYC lost it's personality about 12-13 years ago. Used to be "Gritty, Grimey, Hip Hop & House, Grunge & Techno Ehhh...F@#k outta hea!!, Latino Fan Club dirty a$$ popper smellin' Book Store Basketball Game on W4 st handball" type fun....

    Now it's just...

Now you know that is not accurate. The white woman is not staring at a damn phone!

    * New York is not ruined...still has to be the best city in the US.*

I never said it was "ruined", it just has no "personality" anymore. At least not for those of us that are either from here or have been living here since the late 90's/ early 2000's. And the gif is more an anology comparing a gritty, worn, "Street Tuff" to a glistening, orderly "Susie Homemaker", because thats what this city has become..."Susie Homemaker". Its turning into The New New Jersey.

Well I was not being really serious with my comment or anything. It still has personality-the personality is just different and likes Starbucks and artisanal olive oil shoppes and has upped all the rents.

I think Suzie homemaker less, millenial hipster/'creative class(despise that term)/lets live in the city(until it's time to have kids) more. Suzie has been forced to retreat to Boise and Oklahoma City and Utah and stuff and has a husband who owns guns and listens to Rush and Glenn Beck. Suzie would not get caught dead in New York City and will have nothing to do with your 'NYC values' cause revered 'Ted the Ped' said so. lol.

    I don't really know guy...I have not been there since 1990! :mjcry1:

Seattle's on the travel list. Keep the info coming!

It was decent enough when I went to college there. It's more a stealth city, they say it's bigger than Cleveland and Cincinnati, but it sure as hell don't look like it! Did you ever see that Family Guy episode where they went to Columbus? I was rolling. "Brian, does this mean, we're trash?" I know Seth MacFarlane was there in 2008 passing out Obama flyers. Spend a week in some hellhole like Rahm-ville, you'll appreciate ???-ville.

Most of my black NYer friends have said exactly what you say. My white coworkers from NYC will tell the opposite; that the city was a John Carpenter movie during Koch and Dinkin years until the Great Messiah Giuliani liberated everyone like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz landing on the wicked witch. I haven't spent much time there, but I'm guessing gentrification plays into all that? the Brooklyn City Sun was my favorite black paper when it was around.

Did you go to OSU? I did not originally see the Family guy thing-but did soon after-people here were thrilled just to have any exposure for this city like it was a huge deal smh. Cowlumbus, Klumpis, Cbus does not get much exposure good or bad. The city is as big as Dayton, Cleveland, and Cincy combined, but metro is nearly the same as Cincy and Cleveland-whose hatred for eachother is surpassed only by their hatred of Columbus-the poor upstart little sibling which has now gotten nearly as big as they are.

*Columbus does not seem as big compared to them because they are older/more established. In 1950 Cincy metro was twice as big, Cleveland 3 times as big...now they are all about the same.

I think cities can have multiple personalities. People just assume there's one collective one. Take LA for instance. A lot of people envision Hollywood, beaches, people in the "industry," and all that other shit. That "personality" definitely exists, but in my personal experience that's very skewed. That's a very white upper class view of LA. In reality, LA is predominately Latino and also has large populations of other people of color. Whenever I see Buzzfeed articles on what it's like to live in LA they always show the first description which paints a certain picture. That's not how I perceive the city and it's definitely not what I like about it. You just gotta find your own pocket in a city and realize there are many different aspects of it.

Yep, but finished the degree elsewhere. Was part-time and working. All my roommates were off campus, never the dorms. Helped a girlfriend moved ou of Lincoln Tower one Saturday night as a freshman...moving on a Saturday night, lol. Those dorm kids were like a Family Dollar version of Animal House. After that, I was like hell nah, no dorms! And yeah, the Family Guy skit was NOT meant as a compliment. When Seth Macfarlane came there in 2008 for Obama, he drew a crowd in Goodale Park of maybe 40 or less. He was probably like where da hell everybody at in this joint? Although I see you all got a lot of post-reelection money from the administration. All those new downtown highways must have been a big 2012 Thank You from the prez!

The damn city is overbuilt with freeways and needs some better public transportation-COTA sucks and always has. Biggest city in the nation with no rail transit of any kind.

Don't get it twisted, my dude. LOL There's a LOT of white and "white" (e.g. Italian, Jewish, Russian, etc) people I know that miss the "John Carpenter" days as well. Majority people that... "OMG, I F#$KING, LOVE living in the Cityyyyyyyyy {flip hair, puff Vap machine, and take sip from some obscure imported beer that really tastes like sh!t}"... now, are not from here and have been here for less than 10yrs. They came here during "The Great Migration of 2005-07" with the rest of the Shiny, Happy People after the prospectors declared the city "Safe for Settling".

You're cool, no twist involved, lol. Like I said, haven't spent any substantial time there so going off other's impressions. You can clue me in the future if I ever get to spend some substantial time there. I'd want a happy medium between your hair flipping vapping skinny jeans crowd and some hotep Five Percenter selling incense and bean pies!
