I'm being purposeful in my redundancies here.
    • This is a stupid tweet.
    • Followed by a stupid comment.
    • The term "woke" is stupid being that it's being used just as much as "hater" now by Black folks.
    • If folks who listen or have listened to Kendrick Lamar couldn't hear the truth or activism and his unapologetic Blackness (which I have pointed out in POSTS and Threads) in SOME of his music then they are stupid also.
    • Folks been saying Kendrick is "woke" for years now.
    • Which goes back to my original thought; This tweet is stupid.
Jessie's speech while FULL of obvious "the black community needs to come together"; however it was delivered in a Micheal Eric Dyson, rhyme poetic format which sensationalized its presentation and reception. This is why its a hit.

PS. I didn't go see Kendrick....JUST LIKE I've never watched a television show where Jessie acts in. Doesn't mean I can't appreciate the positivity and message of both Black men.

You peeped that...is it that obvious?

Yeah, I'm not in a good place right now so I probably need to back up off of social media for a couple of days.

Thats cause most people like activism that comes from people that are ATTRACTIVE... It makes you value the message so much more when the messenger is so good to look at...

Activism can pay too!-even if you are skinny, gay and wear a blue puffy vest! Congrats DeRay on your new job with Baltimore schools that pays $165,000.00 a year! :ohhh:

Like I said, Black people can pander to people to advance their careers too. @acessential calls it cynicism, I call it capitalism.

While I agree, I don't feel this is what Jessie (nor Kendrick) is doing. If that's the case he (Jessie) would have been more famous and more successful a long time ago.

FYI...Props to Black activists. Some of their harshest criticisms come from the very people they are attempting to speak out for.

How do you figure? I'm not saying that he (or even that Blue-Vested-Twink) doesn't actually care about the movement, I'm saying they realized that being vocal advocates can bring notoriety and fame in the black community. This is especially helpful if you are a Black entertainer who needs a career boost (ie: David banner, Talib Kweli, etc).

Many of these Celeb Black Activists tho, they're the Social Media equivalent to Rev Al Sharpton, will only do something if the cameras are rolling or if Black Twitter is watching.

While you're making valid points that I agree with, I know you personally. LOL You don't like any Black activism unless it's coming from Van Jones.

If Kendrick Lamar released a full album dedicated to BLM you would probably burn his jersey and delete all his music from your iPhone.

I have...is this album unapologically Black? Absolutely. Do I consider it BLM level of pro black activism? Absolutely not. If it was, you absolutely wouldn't like it. Why you playin?

Before this turns into questioning Kendrick's activism (which I'm not, nor qualified to do)...let me get back to my point LOL

This is one of those times I'm in agreement with @Nick Delmacy. I met up with a professional friend this afternoon who I didn't even think cared about BET Awards and as soon as I walk into his office Jessie Williams is on YouTube on the laptop. He started to proceed with "this speech is the greatest thing since the March on Washington" vibe. I literally repeated Nick's post verbatim ("Blah, blah, blah, magic negro, blah, blah, blah...."). Shut him down real quick. Lol.

Thanks for being my Cyrano De Bergerac, man!

But @Ockydub you know I got your back on most other topics, especially religion.

    Q. How do you know Jesus was fem?
    A. He spent six hours getting his nails done.

What I sense is the Beyonce effect happening...

I don't have a problem with Beyonce nor am I a fan of her or her music, but because everyone stans for her and has epileptic seizures over everything she does while propping her up in the media, I don't like "her" and resist her even more. ...even though she's not done anything wrong.

I sense the same reaction happening with Jessie.

    You wrong for that...

Keep in mind, like I said previously, I agree with what @Nick Delmacy was saying. I just don't agree with the critique and attacks on Jessie.

I'm like this dude has been speaking on this for YEARS now and at non-televised award shows/galas and ceremonies. Why is it when BET decided to highlight him, he gets questioned and attacked for saying things he's always said?

Maybe he should have just accepted his award said thank you and walked off the stage....but knowing the Black community, they still would have had something negative to say about that.

Which is way I gave up on the "Black community coming together in unity" BS a long time ago. Still doesn't mean I stand in the way of those still trying to speak up for and unify us positively.

Ok, first that joke was told to me by a white Catholic associate. In his words, "I'm a member of the Lords family, so I can joke at the dinner table."

But on the serious tip, I don't have a problem with anyone speaking out/up, it's just that why is it a big deal when a celebrity says something that's been said a million times by a million other people, all of a sudden it's a big deal, positive or negative? I haven't really seen many attacks on him in my circles, just the opposite, I see him over praised by Black folk. That's why I threw Nick's words at my friend. Are Black folk so butt hurt in 2016 that a Black actor speaking to a Black audience about Black culture on a Black-focused network is intellectual manna from heaven? If we are really that culturally butt hurt, where are the picket signs for the fact BET isn't even Black owned any more (now THERE'S some appropriation for you, lol).

We've got more actors, producers, writers, directors, etc. in our own communitIES (more on that in a sec), from Tyler Perry's now-mainstream Hollywood product to the independent Black gay productions that CA promotes and highlights, than at any time in history. Oscar Micheaux and Gordon Parks could only have wished they lived in this age. Some perspective is needed, which is I'm tired of all the whining about "cultural appropriation." I could care less about "cultural appropriation" speeches when there are brothers (like on this site) now getting their financial, educational, and property appropriation on (which is all that really matters anyway).

I'm not going to even touch on the whole "lightskint" aspect of the reaction. If Don Cheadle had said it....(something I DID add to Nick's words in confronting my friend). Speeches are cool and everything, but it's the off moments that count. Are we there for the program's needing to be manned and funded the other 364 days of the year after the speech? The programs that help keep these young black men out of situations were they don't end up in situations that result in negative police interactions? Not letting cops off the hook, but we have to look at why we don't see a lot of young, black immigrant males (African, West Indian, Dark Asians) in these police situations like a lot of U.S. Born ones. Speeches and raised fists don't mean shit if organization structure is not there to undergird it (i.e. the stupid assed Million Man March et al).

Now as to the whole concept of "Black Unity": yeah, I feel your pain. Been there, been done in by that. I understand the urge for "Black Unity" comes from living under the overarching cloud of white world supremacy. But I gave up on that childish concept ages ago, as I have a back full of knife wounds inflicted by other "bruthas and sistahs" to teach me better. Besides, "Black Unity" is a legacy of both religious indoctrination and COINTELPRO; i.e. "The Black Messiah" that were all supposed to gravitate towards and follow like a bunch of debris circling Saturn. We are too diverse as a "race," like all human beings, to be embracing such a simple-minded concept. That's why I don't get too caught up in some other Black folk's homophobia. I don't believe in "Unity" anyway, so go ahead, hate on black gay/bi men all you want as long as, unlike Pulse, you keep your hands to yourself. But on the flip side, since we're not "unified" mofos need to understand not to be asking folks like me to support or give money, time, or support to their causes, organizations and same old institutions, in the name of "unity." And since we don't have and never will have "unity," that means my donations and resources can go to places like Cypher Avenue and individual black businesses and endeavors like independent filmmakers/writers/artists on Kickstater/IndieGoGo/Patreon rather than the usual National Association for the Acquisition of Coerced Philanthropy.

I feel it. I can't disprove that. But I also think it puts people in a catch 22. When people have a large audience and resources, people will get mad at them for not using their platform to address injustice. But when they do, people will say it's just for personal gain. You can't win.
