As many of you know, I work in the International Relations / Foreign Policy field and have a few advanced credential to match but I have never actually worked in the field of my credentials because I have been recruiting people and convincing people that the Foreign Service might be the job for them. I have the title of diplomat but I have never actually worked in that capacity, I have mostly been a teacher and spokesman. Well that is all about to change, I received my first political officer orders. I am preparing to move me and my entire life to a foreign country for the next few years and have been receiving these professional development sessions where my "mentor" basically told me to FAKE IT UNTIL I MAKE IT. Is it me or is that some bullshit ass advice?

Have any of you faked it until you made it?

I don't think it bull shyt advice. Depending on the context to me it can mean "on the job training."

It makes a lot of sense. You'll gain the experience in the process. You have to convince yourself and others that you're worthy. Otherwise you'll beat yourself up. I think it's good advice. That's what I try to do.

Not one person who has the position they have knew everything needed for that position, nor did they have the experience necessary to predict what may befall them during their tenure. EVERYONE has to fake it til they make it, it's literally how folks gain experience everyday. I echo Ock in that it's essentially part of on the job training.

Faking it til you make it can have it's potential pitfalls tho... One could make the wrong decision or make a rookie mistake... However, one must have confidence in the futurity of their own skills in order to succeed at anything. They have to be quick and adaptable thinkers capable of developing themselves and the execution of their duties. I think that is what's implied in the fake it til you make it approach.

I've done that in college and quite frankly I think it is necessary. You have to sort of extend your sense of self and have this bigger confidence to appear like you know what you're doing and to get in good with people at times.

Not like you yourself have to really be a fake person but you "do what you have to do" in a sense.

Congratulations on your opportunity, getting to travel sounds exciting! I think the phrase Fake It Til You Make It can be misleading. All the things the guys above me said are true, however many people hearing this advice for the first time, myself included may be inclined to think that faking it is all you are doing, and that instead of actually addressing gaps in experience, skill, or whatever you just go along with everything and pretend like you're in control when you're not. It just depends on how you interpret the advice, yes you should have confidence in yourself and your ability to learn and grow but I think it's also important to be honest and realistic with yourself and others about your capabilities.

    Good Luck!

I think almost everyone 'fakes it' in the interview process. You're trying to make a good first impression, show your competent and confident in your your abilities, and convince people who may believe otherwise that you deserve to be where you are. In the Foreign Service, I'd assume every new person you meet would be a new interview.

I think it is a lot of first tour jitters on my part. I know there will be a learning curve like there is when you start any new job but my mentor said that is going to be an entire career. Every two years, I will pack up and start a new job in a new place with new people. I think he means that I will find what I do well and capitalize on it and everything else just fake it until you make it. Take calculated risks and trust that I am worthy on doing this job.

Thank you all for your advice and comments

Sounds to me like he cut out a lot of the bs, and pomp n circumstance of the 'title' at hand, and gave it to u str8. He can give u a list of stuff, but at the end of the day, lists cant cover everything, nor be applied during every situation. Congrats tho.

It's rare that someone is fully competent when starting a job. In many jobs I've had to "fake it till you make it." I just started a new job recently. I'm faking right now as I type this. Half the time I have no idea what I'm doing. Most employers half assed train you if they even train you at all which is why most of the job postings you see want someone with experience because they don't want to go through the trouble or expense of investing in training new employees.

"Don't lie about your expertise. The problem with the whole fake-it-until-you-make-it technique is that you risk skipping fundamentals. For instance, if you lie about your level of expertise in Photoshop, then all the tasks you have to do involving this program are going to be harder than you can handle. Let your employer take your learning curve into consideration. Or else you'll run out of steam in no time."-Ritika Trikha

If you don't give a fuck about your job/career, that's great advice. Otherwise, do your job and do your job very well, even with constructive criticism that can evaluate a learning mistake and create the opportunity to do better. Nonetheless, don't take any career advancement or a given career opportunity for granted when it's presented to you.

    Much success (on repeat)!

Essentially, dude is telling you to exude confidence while you learn the ropes and observe how other people operate. Learn from the mistakes of others and emulate those people who are effective in their positions and who achieve concrete results. If you're really fortunate, you'll be able to identify a mentor or two. There's nothing like having a personal champion in your corner to help further your career. Congratulations man!!!

That advice, after reading the replies, seems to mean," just have confidence." I'm in an internship right now, and I'm learning the hard way that networking and gaining positive relationships are difficult when you seem unsure and doubtful in what you are doing. Even if you do not know what you are doing, just be confident and take the constructive criticism without letting it beat you down (look at them as learning opportunities). You'll be fine man, and congratulations.
