I mean, I'm the biggest Gambino/Glover fan here and even I have come to terms with it...

I've never been much of a Childish Gambino fan...and the album is definitely a grower. HOWEVER, Me and Your Mama is MY SHIT!!!! It's amazing to smoke to. lol

Respectfully disagree. It's a great funk rock album in the mold of the best early 70s funk-rock, aka pre-"Flashlight" Funkadelic (aka "Cosmic Slop"), Sly Stone and the Isley Brothers in their post-Motown/early T-Neck period. It's good to see the youngbloods like Glover reaching back, just like when old heads reach forward (like Duran Duran reaching out for Janelle Monae, or Daft Punk getting with Niles Rodgers).

Yeah I don't disagree on the influences...However, that doesn't mean this album is as good as the artists/albums that influenced it. It felt like a musician trying to mimic a style that clearly he/she hadn't been honing and nurturing for years. I do appreciate the experimentation and nod to a bygone era though.

I personally like when artists go off the reservation, in any genre. Seen this so many times. When Stevie Wonder put out "Secret Life of Plants" right after "Songs in the Key of Life" ("what the fuck, a concept album about plants having feelings?!?!?!"); or all the white kids in college freaking out when REM dumped their "Losing My Religion" folk rock and put out "Monster", their punk album (my favorite of their, natch). Or when Prince did "Parade" (Under the Cherry Moon).

So don't worry; in the three above cases, the artists didn't do well with the backlash and put out "stronger" albums in the minds of their fans ("Hotter Than July", "Sign O the Times"). With that precedent, you're gonna LOOOOOOOVE his next album.

Agreed. Same thing happened with Kanye West after his emotional auto-tune heavy album 808s and Heartbreaks (although I love that album). After that backlash, he holed up in a Hawaii "Rap Camp" with artists such as Pete Rock, Raekwon and Rza to create My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, arguably his best album to date that made him a Grammy winner in 2012.

Yeah, "Fantasy" seems to be the last bit of greatness for most of the "No Longer On The Kanye Bandwagon" folk I know. Although, I did like bits of Yeezus. Instead of funk rock, he reached back to 70s Glam Rock. "Black Skinhead" was basically the kind of thing that Gary Glitter or Freddie Mercury could have done (except Mercury wasn't a perv).

True, YEEZUS was def a departure, one that I liked....however I never questioned anyone that said they didn't. It was an acquired taste.

Interesting how everything sooner or later gets back to Kanye. It either says something about him or this joint - or both. No problem with it, just sayin
and BTW liked the Childish Gambino but it took a while

"Circus Envy" is the song I would murder somebody by. I always find myself singing along and changing the lyrics from "I got my telescope" to "riflescope" lol

Lifes Rich Pageant is still my favorite of theirs.Out of Time and AFTP are my least favorites but it's cool that Stipe hooked up with KRS-One before rock-rap hybrids became a thing.

JagStang is alright but my wish rock guitar will always be "jangle" models, like the 12-string Rickenbacker of Lennon/Roger McGuinn/Tom Petty fame; or whatever the hell the Spinners are playing rhythm guitar on in Stevie Wonder's "It's a Shame"; or whatever is used for Archie Bell and the Drells' "Tighten Up"

Life's Rich Pageant was a big influence on Ed Kowalczyk of +Live+,a band that changed my life.Stipe and Cobain had something in the works.I bet that would've been really special.
