How many of y'all joining the Mo'nique boycott of Netflix?

I have no problem that she spoke out. I just disagree with her strategy of boycotting Netflix. It makes no sense. Alot of black people rely on Netflix for entertainment. Alot of people aren't going to the movies every weekend. Folks are cutting expensive cable packages. Netflix is a amazing cheap form of entertainment. So for a rich comedian to tell black folks to boycott for her issue. Im just not so sure.

And I see so many people on social media saying unless you are a black woman you can't disagree with Monique. What?? These folks are too far to the left with this.

 

My thing is...Netflix has every right to offer what they want to these comedians. I would def feel a certain type of way if ONLY Amy Schumer and Dane Cook were offered million dollar specials...but that's not the case here. They paid Black comedians the most money (based on what Mo'Nique said). So this isn't about race or gender, it's about noboby at Netflix thinking Mo'Nique and Wanda Sykes are worth millions of dollars...and you know what? Neither do I.

 

TBH I understand her being upset. Does Amy really justify so much exponentially more than her? I don't think so but I can understand Amy getting paid more than her just by way of her current pop culture worth.

I find Wanda Sykes in general funnier than Mo but she seems to appeal more to whyfokes more than black people.

That's the thing. Who's to say this is about race and not about ratings draw? Do you know for certain that low draw white comedians were offered way more that Wanda and Mo'Nique? As you admitted, Amy is a bigger draw that Mo'Nique. Oprah, Tyler and Lee Daniels stopped fucking with her, are they racist too?

 

It appears that Monique is STILL cursed by her Academy Award win. I think she has every right to make the disparity known but this sorta seems like she has shitty negotiators. This comes off as entitled. No one is entitled to 20 million dollars....looks like Amy's people were doing their jobs and getting her more money. Monique's people need to do the same. While I think Monique is a legend and very funny Comedian she needs to stop being so damn entitled all the time. Put in the work and get results.

 

See, if Tiffany Haddish was on Instagram talking about only being offered $500k, I would see your point....but we're talking about Mo'Nique, a comedian that has been out of the national spotlight for nearly 8 years.

 

You're proving my point even more. Cypher Ave would get a much lower offer than both Queerty and BGCLive...hell, even Signal 23 TV's deactivated YouTube page could get a higher offer based on awareness and relevance to the market.

 

Maybe we're debating different points or not seeing things the same way...

There's no racial bias: Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock get more than any other comedian on Netflix so far. And both of those comedians are culturally relevant to the Netflix audience.

There's no gender bias: Amy Schumer got 13 million, more than many white male comedians.

If the debate is Black Women get offered less, my response is: Show me an example of Black Women who are as relevant and bankable as Schumer (like Tiffany Haddish or even Whoopi Goldberg, who has hosted The View since 2005) that were only offered scraps. Then I'll be marching right along with them.

Nobody that I know, both white and black, are checking for a Wanda Sykes standup comedy show...they def not checking for Mo'Nique either. But I do know ppl who would watch Tiffany Haddish or even a raunchier Whoopi Goldberg like in her old days.

The only Academy Award curse is the potential for an inflated sense of self, and Monique def fell victim. Netflix obviously lowballed her, while leaving room for negotiations. However, she keeps letting this husbandger of hers soup her head up into thinking she can command the same pay as mofos who are selling out MSG. The Latarian in me will always be here for the ridiculousness of Nikki Parker, but where are her real life friends who are supposed to let her know her last name isn't Streep?!

What Monique should do is try out for somebody sitcom or invite all the people who she burnt bridges with over for dinner and talk it out. Hell I'd just hop my ass on the tour bus and do comedy shows. Unless she's too bourgeois for that now.

 

Well, I believe that if you change your attitude you can change your circumstance. Ms. Monique needs to take a bite of Humble Pie and do what she does best, ACT and BE FUNNY and she will find her way to the Millions of dollars she thinks she deserves.

 

-Monique just needs to fire her manager which happens to be her husband. He is the root of her career problems.

-Mediocre talentless white comedians, actors, writers, directors, etc still get more money (and more chances) than there black counter parts.

 

Stand up from a distance. Stedman is not Oprah's manager. Jay-Z is not Beyonce's manager. They so busy holding up the Black Fist...that they don't realize they're punching themselves in the face.

 

...and another thing...I find it gross that when they speak, they refer to each other as "mama" and "daddy"...yuck.

 

Also, how soon we all forget that Netflix paid millions to steal Shanda Rhimes and her Black Women driven shows from ABC...Yup, that clearly sounds like racism and gender bias! Let's Boycott!

I know I'm late to the party but I'm gonna say this. While Monique may have a point it is also true that the hotter you are in the entertainment industry the more money you can command. To be blunt Monique hasn't been a hot commodity for quite a few years now. While Netflix probably did low ball her she should've had a competent manager who could negotiate a better salary. It's hard for me to feel sorry for her in this regard when she was offered more money than most people make in a year or even 4 years. Bottom line I'm not boycotting Netflix over this.
