    Well, this is disappointing.

Video of Atlanta and Get Out star Lakeith Stanfield spouting off a homophobic rap has surfaced online.

The 20-second video was originally posted on Stanfield’s own Instagram account but was quickly deleted.

“That’s some gay sh*t,” 26-year-old Stanfield raps in the video. “F*g, I don’t really like to brag but I’m straight, rich.”

In addition to acting, Stanfield is a member of a hip hop group named Moors.

Shortly thereafter it was reposted on Twitter by user @_BayBey, along with the caption: “So @lakeithlakeith from @AtlantaFX && @Sorry2BotherYou Though this ‘freestyle’ (that you can clearly see him looking down & reading) was appropriate?! Lol ppl are truly Homophobic weirdos Lakeith Stanfield sis you played yourself.”

“I really do feel like Lakeith Stanfield did this lil homophobic rap because there’s 00000 buzz around his upcoming movie,” @_BayBey writes in a followup tweet. “Everyone knows the gays run the world so that was the smartest thing to do to create a buzz.”

Stanfield, who is perhaps best known for playing the role of Andre Hayworth/Logan King in Get Out, last year’s critically acclaimed directorial debut of Jordan Peele, has yet to issue any comment on the video.

So you posted a freestyle with offensive homophobic lyrics during Pride month, titled it "Offensive Freestyle", and deleted the post when people got offended. Where do you go from here?

That’s marketing in the age of Trump. Do something you know is vile, await for the buzz, and hope you can faux apologize (while still collecting publicity chips) and it doesn’t go out of control.

P.S. since when the hell was he the “star” of “Get Out”?

    ...but wait though...

This is 95% of most rap music. These weak lyrics were tame as hell.

if 95% of rap is homophobic, then why are non-heteroes listening to it. Should we be boycotting rap music? Or only listening to non-hetero friendly artist, and who are those friendly artist? I know you and Nick wrote about a few gay rap artist in the past, but do you know of the straight rappers who are gay freindly? The 5% i guess

I can’t speak for Ock but I took that as rhetorical. Thanks to availability on Spotify, Tidal, etc. I know that hip hop is more than “Top 40” and there are plenty of artists out there who don’t subscribe to homophobia.

There’s always been a strain of hotep masculinity running through rap thanks, even among the supposedly “progressive” artists like PE and Chuck D (“Meet the G That Killed Me”), due to machismo and toxic masculinity. It’s the Wagner thing I mentioned in previous threads, do you the listener separate art and artist (like the Israeli philharmonic looking past Wagner’s antisemitism and performing his works) , or throw out all the work due to the artist (Roseanne, Bill Cosby)? I guess individuals will always be iffy on the subject, like how some women stan for R Kelly, or white folks love playing Garry Glitter’s “Rock and Rock Pt 2” at sporting events even though he’s a known, convicted, serial pedophile.

Anyone excusing this is purposely giving him a pass because of superficial reasons (ie: he's cute, or they like his character on "Atlanta"). I don't know of many rappers in 2018 who are spouting lyrics like these...and the rare ones that do get backlash from them, as should Lakeith Stanfield.

We can't sit here and give shit to Joy Reid, Roland Martin and Isaiah Washington and give a dude like this a pass. ESPECIALLY when, as other have already stated, Lakeith knew that what he was posting would be offensive to many of his LGBT fans.

On top of that, the offensive lyrics didn't serve as a comment on bullying or discrimination...it was just a nigga being anti-gay to make himself seem more "manly."

I don't dislike Stanfield in general, so its not me being overly sensitive and biased. I just think, like so many models/actors/personal trainers on social media, we see their public image and forget that they are regular people too...regular people who can easily be as homophobic as anyone you meet on the street. Especially in the Black community where the Church indoctrinates judgement and disapproval of others' lives that don't meet ever sliding religious standards.

Don't mind him, @OckyDub hasn't listened to any new hip hop music since 1993. If he had, he would know that 95% of rap music is NOT homophobic now. If anything, more rappers are gender-benders and blurring lines of sexuality and masculinity.

I guess my ears are lying to me.

Artists may not have explicit anti-homosexual words like "fag or faggot" in their mainstream releases; however on many mixtapes they do and they also use other coded language.

Not only that...what about their on the record opinions about homosexuality? How many threads have Cypher Ave posted about it this year? Migos comes to mind.

If I recall many readers responded like "oh look, homophobic rappers and water is wet...duh"

...but now we clutching pearls while still bumping Migos?

I never said there was NO homophobia in Hip Hop...Hell, I wrote a couple essays on the topic here on the website. All I'm saying is when certain celebs are openly homophobic, we need to hold them account for that.

There wasn't much shrugging when Joy Reid did it...and in her case the blog posts were years old, Lakeith JUST recorded and posted this video...in 2018! So we need to hold him to account when they fuck up.

Migos was accused of homophobia and immediately had to do damage control because the LGBT community held their feet to the fire, the same should happen with Lakeith.

Notice that artists like these NEVER say anything Anti-Semitic...Even to this day, when ever I hear the 90s song "All About the Benjamins" in clubs or radio, they censor "stack chips like Hebrews" yet Lakeith Stanfield can post this in 2018 and the reaction is "shrugs."

If the "offensive" rap lyrics were about Jews or faux clever lines of being "gassed like Hitler" I guarantee he would have never even posted it in the first place.

Yo you remember when Puff Daddy had to offer an apology / censor because of the lyric "I got Asian women who change my linens" because of the back lash from the Asian community in NY. Black women were like "what about us...your music degrades us via misogyny?"....

    crickets

Well, I certainly enjoyed the discourse between @OckyDub and @Nick Delmacy ’m not up on what constitutes “top” music these days, hip hop or otherwise. Luckily, through CA, the Ka-os blog, Rafi D’angelo, and other LGBT sites I’m constantly introduced to new music that wouldn’t see the light of day in the radio-dominant era.

Lol. Yeah, the only time I ever saw Marlon Brando apologize to anyone for shit, considering his outspokenness, was when he talked about Hollywood film stereotypes on CNN and how certain groups are constantly belied while others aren’t.

And then when Michael Jackson was forced to redo “They Don’t Really Care About Us”? (“Sue me / Jew me / everybody do me ... kick me / k-ke me / don’t you black and white me ...”)

So true...Also I wonder if Lakeith Stanfield would be cool with a white rapper calling him a "Nigger" in a freestyle but first tagging it with the caption "Offensive Freestyle (Not for the easily offended)"

    Lol.

I always gave John Lennon props when I discovered his solo music after his death, because when he wrote his feminist song “Woman is the Nigger of the World” he at least asked his black friends Dick Gregory and Ron Dellums if it was okay for a white man like him to use that in a song. If he was that prescient in 1972, what excuse do mofos have now?

That’s why I don’t give any passes on offensive words in music unless you can show me real artistic merit. Like when Green Day sang “Well, maybe I’m the faggot, America” in “American Idiot”. Billy Joe Armstrong, bisexual, was trying to draw the alt-right, pro-Iraq Bush fuck’s fire not casually drop an f-bomb. Stanfield wasn’t pulling a Green Day, so fuck him...

I think everyone one else has pretty much covered everything but I'm still gonna put my 2 cents in. I'm pretty sure it's a safe bet none of us were surprised by this. In the black community it's still acceptable to bash black gay men both verbally and literally. My rule when it comes to straight men, especially straight black men is they're all homophobic unless proven otherwise. Lakeith is canceled as far as I'm concerned.

No but I’m going to see it to support the leftist hip hop artist and screenwriter/director Boots Riley of The Coup, a band I like. I’ll just take the Israeli Philarmonic playing Wagner option on this one.

yes i'm going. i also continue to eat chic-fil-a as well as listen to r kelly and kanye. though i am observing the nfl boycott for the second consecutive year, i'm not a faithful believer in boycotts generally. similarly, i don't think ppl should be shamed or ostracized for not participating in them. i think these are personal decisions.

on a related note, seems like i'm the only one here who doesn't find lakeith attractive. if he hit me up on jack'd and unlocked, i'd honestly leave him on read lol all that to say, attraction has played no role in my interest in seeing the film at all.
