No fewer than 57 suspected gays have been arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly gathering to conduct initiation rites in the state.

The initiation reportedly took place around 1am on Sunday, August 26, 2018, at a hotel in the Egbeda area of the state.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, said the arrest was based on intelligence from men of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps.

Imohimi said on receipt of the information, the Divisional Police Officers of the Shasha and Idimu divisions, were ordered to investigate the claim that some youths would be initiated into a “gay/homosexual club.”

He said, “The DPOs stormed the venue around 2am. On arrival, young men, numbering over 80, were met in a hall taking different types of drinks, including Tramadol and Shisha laced with substances suspected to be marijuana. As soon as they sighted the police, they ran in different directions. However, the team arrested 57 of them.

“There is something very worrisome about the arrest. Although being a gay contravenes Section 1, sub-section 1 of Same Sex Marriage Act of 2014, it is a threat to the moral fabric of our society. Even though homosexualism is an offence, arranging elaborate initiation rites for young men as homosexuals is, to say the least, very worrisome.”

The arrested suspects, however, denied the allegation, saying they were not gays.

They added that the police did not give them a chance to defend themselves.

One of the suspects, Smart Joel, said he was at the hotel to give himself a treat on his birthday.

The 25-year-old Imo State undergraduate claimed that he had a girlfriend.

He said, “I am not a member of any gay club; I have a girlfriend. I have sex with ladies.

“I had visited the venue two years ago for a wedding ceremony and I liked the environment. Saturday was my birthday. I went there to have some drinks when I noticed that a party was going on in the event hall. Around 2am, I noticed that some guys were running. I had to run because in Nigeria, when you see people running, you have to also run for your life.

“I noticed that the policemen had invaded the premises of the hotel. They gathered everyone from the bar, club and hall. I got to know that it was a birthday party that was going on there. The police did not listen to anyone.”

Another suspect, Obialo James, 20, who claimed to be HIV positive, said the police did not show any concern for his medical condition.

The Imo State indigene said, “I am not a gay; I went there to perform because I am a dancer. Is being a dancer a crime? They have been beating me so that I can say I am a gay. Even when I told them that I was HIV positive, they did not care. I contracted the disease from my mother during pregnancy. Instead, they locked me up. I have not taken my drugs today.”

Another suspect, Odika Emmanuel, 25, said he did not understand why the police separated the ladies from the men during the arrest.

“It was yesterday (Sunday) when we were writing our statement that the police told us our offences. Is that how the police operate in Lagos? I was there for a birthday party. There were a lot of ladies there,” he added.

Meanwhile, family members of one of the arrested suspects, Amaechi Edeh, said the suspect was not a gay.

Amaechi’s younger brother, Ejike, said the suspect had three girlfriends.

He said, “My brother is not such a person. We live together; he has three girlfriends that I know.”

Another 78-year-old family member, who identified himself as Ejeh, said Amaechi could never be gay.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police said all the 57 suspects were being investigated and would be charged to court at the end of investigation.

On one hand I’m disgusted, particularly how they treated the pos young man. Old Newsflash: tons of African straights have HIV. Famed Nigerian musician, Fela Kuti, a well established ladies man, famously died of AIDS.

On the other hand, I’m laughing at their attempt to portray sexual orientation as something you can simply choose and acquire membership like pledging the Alphas or Kappas, or joining the Elks, Masons, or Rotary Club.

    right.....

I was having a debate this weekend with a few people(Rwandans mostly) concerning an interview that Paul Kagame(the current president of Rwanda) did when he was in San Fransisco in which he said, I quote: "Homosexuality hasn't been our problem and we don't intend to make it a problem. We are having all kinds of issues and we need everybody at the table"

this is the most "progressive" answer you're probably get from any African president about this issue. Some people were having their panties in a bunch because they took as him endorsing/tolerating "the gays" and I was like y'all niggas were hacking each other to death with machetes 25 years ago over some trivial physical traits and bullshit, but actually saying that people deserve a seat at the table regardless of their sexual orientation is abomination. suuuuuurrrrreee......:carl2:

Africans need to do better! we need to stop the bullshit and focus our energy on building some transcontinental highways....

Thanks SO MUCH for this. He is absolutely right! Nigeria is PLAGUED with so many problems that the morally bankrupt and insidiously corrupt government does NOT and WILL NOT deal with. So they use criminalizing homosexuality as a distraction, in my opinion. It is a failed country and will forever remain so and that's not in my opinion but a FACT!!!
Also lmao at the gif at the end, it always gets me when someone uses it.

Just when you get tired of America and the crazy shit that goes on over here, you read shit like this. And you are reminded how backward, ignorant, and despicable other countries can be.

The simple fact of a government and law enforcement telling grown ass consenting adults what they cant do sexually and what is considered moral. WHAT IN THE ENTIRE FUCK!

Shit like this would make me not blink an eye if this whole fuckin country got blown off the map.

FUCK NIGERIA WITH AN AIDS RIDDEN, 20 INCH DICK, LACED WITH CANCER AND HEROIN....

This shit is so sad man, just to think about what other people go through daily. I know this might sound wild but is it crazy that I feel the hurt and fear from being gay more than being black? I know how we as black people are still treated all over the world and the journey has been nothing but easy. I still can't recall a time in my life where I was terrified of being black but I can remember many times I've felt that way for being gay.

@Omega Level Yeah, Nigeria has its share of problems, but I have to point out there is a sizable if politically powerless group of millennials there who don’t endorse the post-colonial nonsense. Sadly, most leaders over 40 in Africa are content with the status quo and being China’s neocolonial bottom bitches.

We can go ahead and blame the usual suspects, White western and Arab Christians and Muslims and their filthy fucking religions for infesting the continent with homophobic madness (since history and anthropology shows us that the current attitudes were fomented by two thousand years of Islamic and European colonialism). The mix of toxic black working class hotepism, in the US and Africa, with religion is why I always say I love black people in theory (potential) but hate us in reality (behavior and practice).

I recognize our African heritage but I don’t unintelligently bow down to or worship it, especially after I read this book back in the day

@jusrawb Thats why we have to fight tooth and nail against Trump and current ICE/DHS policy in America. If our doors close, where wil African LGBT asylum seekers go?
