I'm trying to watch my diet and budget and realized I spend about $25-$30 per week. Not too happy about this.

How many times per week do you eat out or have fast food? Do you know how much you spend eating out per week?

I use to eat out a lot, like twice a week. Stems from the habit I have of always trying out new places. However over the last 4 years I was able to cut it down to once a month. Now I find a place I would like to try, wait a month sometimes even two then check it out.
Cooking at home really helped too. I would make 3 different dishes during the weekend then devour them during the week. lol

I stopped eating out 1) because I'm on a budget budget and 2) I'm really trying to maintain my fitness goals.

It's annoying sometimes to have to meal prep but it's so necessary. I typically cook to have lunch and dinner for at least 2 days but 3 is my max and then rinse and repeat. I can't eat leftovers longer than 3 days.

I find that people underestimate waking up a little earlier to cook a proper breakfast - eggs, oatmeal, etc cost almost nothing over the span of a week and it also gets your metabolism going which can aid in weight loss. If waking up earlier means I have to watch one less episode on netflix or w/e before bed, then so be it.

Only times I eat out is if I didn't meal prep like I should have so I have to grab something for lunch or it's a random friday evening/saturday and I'm treating myself.

I’ve really cut back. Even a shitty burger at McD or Burger King is averaging $5; three times a week adds up to $60 bucks/month.

If you have the space and permission, it helps to have a personal mini fridge in your workspace. For snacks etc. buy bulk at Costco and drop them off at work. I think the MONEY people save from NOT eating out is actually a bigger motivator than the calories. For instance, I found an expresso machine at Target for $30. After just five cups, it’s paid for itself compared to getting that overpriced shit at Starbucks, or even Dunkin’ and McDs.

I eat out less than others but more than Y'all. Lol weekends I'm lazy and just don't feel like cooking. I'll cook breakfast but that's about it. I know I spend more than I need to.

I have definitely been getting less Popeye's though but I try to find ways where what order out goes further.

For example, a taquieria I like sell tacos at ~2.90 each. I usually get 3. That's 9 bucks and one meal. Versus going to Blaze pizza and getting a thin crust for the same price that'll go for 2 meals. I'll get more protein from that as well.

During the week I treat myself to lunch at Sweet Tomatoes because I get coupons and can eat my whole lunch break and not feel miserable afterwards. 10 bucks for lunch there is great. However there's a KFC buffet and a country buffet also near work for about the same price. If I spent my lunch hour eating at those places I'd feel the itis real quick. But if I go there that's probably going to be my only meal for the day. Minus a light breakfast.

I like to cook but hate eating the same thing for days in a row. Thats why meal prep doesn't work for me. I have made more with the intent to freeze sometimes though. Now I make less elaborate meals that I can cook in 30~40 minutes of active time. Once a week I'll usually do a small roast pork butt in the morning by leaving it in the oven at 250 while I'm in the gym then turning it up to 425 for an hour while I shower and get my clothes ready. I can slice it or pull it and eat it as is or make quesadillas out of it or wraps. Then I'll just pair a bagged salad with it. This lasts 2 days then I'm on to something else. I made beef and broccoli yesterday and a chicken fajita soup today. Pork is defrosting now for Thursday morning so not getting anything out until Saturday.

    Also....

SmashBurger is offering a smash pass for $100. You can eat there everyday for 100 days. It's seriously considering this TBH.

Do they offer a side salad? Ditch the bun, through the meat on top...and it’s paleo! Go for it!

Cool. Even though I think they’re subs are subpar (*snare*), Jimmy Johns has an “unwich” option where you can get any sub as a wrap. I usually get the lettuce “bun” option when at Five Guys. Finally, I like that Panda Express has steamed veggies as an alternative to rice and low mein noodles (but you have to watch the sugar level in some of the meat entrees)...

Yes I can phuq up some PE. That's also a place that's been seeing less of me. I used to get the 2 plates. Now I'll get a bowl with half veggies half noodles and an entree. But the teriyaki chicken is a good choice for the two plates..

I realized that cooking at home only works best for me in the winter. I purchased every meal I ate this past summer...healthy or otherwise. Now that the weather's changing... back to cooking for myself.

Yeah I enjoy the occasional PE too. I usually like the string bean chicken or broccoli beef and try to avoid the heavily breaded or sugared meat entrees.

California Pizza Kitchen now offers a cauliflower crust instead of traditional grain. Whole Foods also sells plain frozen cauliflower pizza crusts too. I still prefer the meatza over cauliflower crusts for the keto effect!

I eat out at least once a week. Usually more. I justify it by saying that because I live abroad in a comparatively cheaper place than the U.S., it's fine. But then I end up overdoing it and spend the same per week as I would in the U.S.

Is it also a quality issue? I would think eating out in other countries isn’t as nutritionally defeating as being in the US; i.e. if I was in France I’d probably be in cafes and bakeries a lot more than I would here due to far better quality.

I'm sure some Paris croissants with raspberry jam and butter is good but you're probably not going to get super American sized portions. I think a lot of our problems in the US food related is how much food we get in a single serving. We really expect a certain amount of abundance for our dollar.

Wendy's 4 for 4s, Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen 5 Dollar Bonafide Big Boxes, Rally Checkers 4 for 3s and that's just on the low end. Most people could split a cheesecake factory pasta dish into two servings..it's always comical when the severs ask you if you want desert. Like I just at apps and a big ass meal. I'm not getting a desert that costs 2 bucks less than my whole entree and I'm stuffed af.

Americans fat as hell because we eat too damned much.

Lol. Not rly. I mostly go thru phases where I eat the same shit for a minute. I def don't have the patience for cooking long drawn out meals unless I'm cooking for others/special occasions.

I think that's somewhat true. I don't feel like some places use as much sugar and all that as we do. But, I think that's starting to change.

Yep I’m afraid of our “filthy Western ways” turning the whole globe into some Pixar Wall-E world of fat teletubbies as tech expands. On one hand, glad to see people come out of poverty but not to join us in becoming “Walmartian” bodies ...

The first time I went to a TRUE French bakery and had a REAL macaroon, I realized how nasty and oversugared American desserts are. My favorite is tiramisu. Some day I’ll have to go to Italy or Sicily to experience a true one as I’m sure all the versions I’ve had in the US are oversweetened parodies.

As much as I often complain about America’s (for now) third largest city, ethnic diversity in restaurants here is always was a plus. Plenty of opportunities to avoid nasty “American Cuisine” when eating out.

food is such a source of joy for me that i typically budget it as a quasi luxury expense #expensiveboujieshit

if eating from the hot bar at whole foods or purchasing their prepared foods is considered eating out, then i eat out more than 4x a week. i like high quality food and i like to know where my food comes from so im willing to spend the dough.

my other food-related concerns, which impact my lunch decisions at work, are that i don't use microwaves and i eat very healthy (with occasional terrible binges every few months) yet hate salad. if i dont bring smthng that doesn't need to be heated, then i have to go get smthng.
