Unless you are reading from the "woke" script, you can't have a contrary or nuanced opinion about the Black Community or issues related to said community without being called a "coon" or thrown into "sunken place" memes.

Whatever. He's not very articulate. But I get what he is trying to say. Shit, I've said the same myself (in more clear and concise words). We need to have these conversations.

Oh, and Black Twitter was okay with Kevin Hart still hosting the Oscars (and not apologizing) after years of homophobia but they are NOT okay with Travis Scott (possibly) performing for 5 minutes at the Super Bowl, the biggest platform of his career, in solidarity for Colin Kaepernick and a NFL boycott that hardly anyone adheres to?!

GTFOH. Where are all of the "coon" memes for the dozens of Black men that will actually be PLAYING 3 hours in the Super Bowl?! Or the hundreds of Black people who will be working at the venue during the Super Bowl?! Or the hundreds of Black people working for the network broadcasting the Super Bowl?! Or the millions of Black people who will indirectly make money from the Super Bowl (Super Bowl commercials cast & crews, sports bar owners & servers, parking lot attendants, etc)?!

I'm not mad at people taking a stand for what they believe in....but at least be consistent.

Being the social media fail that I am, I just saw something saying that this was old, and not in response to him taking the superbowl gig.

That said, you can't compare someone who doesn't NEED the nfl platform (and who'd be a prime 'shoot first, ask questions later' target if he was travis from 9th street and didn't already have a platform) saying 'I'm not w yalls movement, I'm gonna perform', to the trickle down of everyday people indirectly linked to the superbowl through employment.

What I don't understand is people are still following and are fans of their NFL teams, so why are be mad at musical performers performing AT the biggest game for their Fandom, let alone year? Are artistic/creative celebrities any different from athletic ones?

If black people REALLY didn't give a shit about the NFL they wouldn't be watching or going to the games or hoping Lil Peanut from their favorite Division X school gets signed.

Whew...we have to start letting people speak their minds so we can learn who they really are and what they stand for. This thing that people seem to do by only allowing people to comment IF they feel the same way about a topic, is ridiculous...especially since, deep down, many of us have similar feelings as Travis expressed although it is not the popular opinion to share.

If I were an artist...especially a Black one, I think performing at the Super Bowl would be a little to "hot" a topic right now. Probably not worth the backlash. Lauryn Hill's line, "Gain the whole world for the price of your soul," keeps popping into my head. It would be an exchange of fans. Alienate some of your current ones to gain some new ones. But if TS is willing to do it, let him live.

Why not? Rosa Parks NEEDED to ride the bus and so did all those other Black people in Montgomery during the bus boycott. But actually, my point was not to compare Travis Scott with the Parking Attendant, my point was to say the Black Twitter outrage should be directed at anyone Black who doesn't "take a stand" against the NFL, most especially the players playing the ENTIRE SEASON in the NFL, not a dude performing during halftime in one game.

Here's an excerpt from that TMZ article above:
So if that's the case, aren't all of the Black players also "setting the cause back" even more so? Why isn't MBJ and Sharpton calling every Black player a hypocrite and a coon? It's easier to go after someone who goes against the script (and someone who is engaged to a Kardashian).

The end of the day difference is that the NFL IS a player's career! This one gig is not Travis', nor any other artist deciding to silently 'join the movement' by not using their platform in association with the NFL. Hell, back when Paul Robeson and Dorothy Dandridge were fighting Hollywood's one track depiction of blacks as maids and butlers, they boycotted the roles. They didn't expect all of the black people who earned their actual livings in domestic roles to up and quit for the cause!

Travis, like every other black artist opting out, doesn't NEED this like an NFL player NEEDS his livelihood. What is the use of the 90% (not being literal) of black men who comprise and earn their livings in the NFL being unemployed? Entertainers, who aren't dependent upon the NFL for a check, on the other hand, can easily say, 'I'm standing in solidarity with a movement going on around me', if he so chooses. He won't miss a meal because of it.

That said, idc if he does the gig or not. I don't know anything about this young man, other than the fact that I wouldn't exactly be looking to him for decision making cues about anything besides a weed man. What I will say though, is I don't remember ppl giving Chrisette Michelle any support while she was getting dragged up and down the underground railroad for accepting that quick gig. Ijs.

All I read was: Players get a pass, Regular Joes get a pass...Travis Scott doesn't. See, this is my issue. So inconsistent. What makes Kaep's cause so much more poignant is that he lost his livelihood (aka his career) in defense of it...For you to say that a dude taking "one gig" is more of a slap in the face than Black men showing up to work for their "slave masters" daily is mind boggling to me.

And let's be clear: Millionaire athletes don't "NEED" to show up like the parking attendants and concession workers do. And if you think that Travis Scott doesn't "NEED" a venue like the Super Bowl, then you don't know Travis Scott. Just last year I saw him as an opening act for Kendrick Lamar. Not the headliner. He was an opening act. Niggas were still finding their seats when he was performing.

I fuks with you but your whole POV gives my hemorrhoids. A boycott, any boycott, will always be more impactful if the people MOST affected take a stand (and a hit to their wallets) in solidarity, not the people LEAST affected with the LEAST to lose.

This is why I hate when people interview rappers about social and racial issues. Because alot of times what you'll hear is the intellectual equivalent of a shit sandwich. So I can understand why Travis Scott's comments about the whole Mike Brown situation rubbed alot of black folks(myself included) the wrong way. Police in American society get away with too much, especially when they kill black people(black men and boys most of time) without justification and face no consequences. We're supposed to just roll over and accept it. For Travis Scott to cosign that bullshit as a young black man is really unacceptable. Whites like to use the words boot licking negros to justify the status quo.

Everyone who loves every rule/stance/clause from their employer, please raise your hands. I'll wait...

Of course we get your black and white logic that it would be more impactful if all black NFL players walked out, but that's also not likely or very feasible. And you know this. So while TreDonTerequay Jenkins, who literally comes from next to nothing, isn't expected to take any knees against the check he uses to 'feed his family', an entertainer like Travis, who ISN'T dependent upon an NFL check to eat, CAN, opt out of rendering his services. That is, if he so chooses.

This isn't about Travis playing the superbowl. This is about you acting like you don't understand why some people don't want him to. You can feel how you feel, but don't sit up here and act like Travis Scott NEEDS this. That is why he has the flexibility to be completely indifferent either way, to taking this gig. And please spare me the 'woe is Travis the opening act' speech. Everyone starts as an opening act. And he was lucky to be opening up for one of the biggest names in the game. That said, if he was still in NEED of the gig, they wouldn't be seeking him out. I wouldn't know him if he was sitting at the table with me, but I've heard more of/about Astroworld than I ever cared to. Again, he does not NEED this.

As a matter of fact, this almost sounds like the, 'well, white ppl do it too', argument you just complained about in your profile post. At the end of the day, we don't all have the same luxuries. Travis has the luxury to walk away from this gig.

And again, Travis CAN 100% happily go play the superbowl. That's his freedom. But the reason why there are a bunch of ppl over there saying, 'hey man, don't do it/think about this first', is because he is not directly affected by deciding not to lend his talents to the NFL and turning the gig down.

*The use of 'gig' in no way diminishes the platform. No one is clueless enough to not see the superbowl as a big deal. A luxury resort is still a damn resort.

Which is exactly why I said he'd be a prime target for 'shoot first, question later', if he didn't have his platform. Hell, he's from Texas, he's supposed to know better.
