There I said it. I am being honest. Everyone around me is talking about Avengers, or Endgame. I fell off from superheroes a long time ago in favor of more entertaining science fiction and fantasy. I have this hate for these movies unlike any other.

    Why I hate them.

They make too many of them.

The Universe is too big and saturated and nothing makes sense.

They don't leave room for more original type films to be created anymore. (Gravity, Inside Out, Fifth Element).. I know After Earth was kinda trash but I like movies like this.

They aren't that diverse in MCU. As far as I can tell, we only had one black superhero get their own movie. The rest are white. I'm pretty sure there are Asian and other Marvel hero characters of different races too. Give them a shot. Other people need to see representation.

I believe they are to blame for the sudden wave of Disney turning cartoons into live action, CGI films. Ive seen Mufasa die animated..If I need it to be anymore realistic, I'll watch the Discovery Channel... Pleas stop.

There are other types of heroes and comics out there but folks have been recycling the same ones for soooo many years. How many Spiderman movies do we need before someone calls the Exterminator?

No, I don't hate superheroes in general, just the MCU.

Y'all know I like intellectual stuff anyway. Or erotic movies like Basic Instinct but rant over.

You better be careful. This is comic nerd territory. I just look down and stay quiet round here.

Since you and I were already gauntlet snapped, I’ll just enjoy my Not Your Father’s alcoholic root beer six pack in solitude at my lakefront apartment, and just keep to myself, Thor style.

Lol. I like comic book nerds...lol For the most part I'm just messing with them to start a conversation. After all, I did hop my little ass in that tight ass Black Panther suit. I just need something to speak about.

There are some things I nerd for...The original Predator, Aliens, Legend. Lol I've seen them a bazillion times already....haha If it bleeds, we can kill it!!

There’s something definitely homoerotic about black panther. A white gay dude I used to work with also went to a Halloween party as Black Panther a few years ago (admittedly he had the muscular body and “America’s Ass” for it).

We all like different things, I just hated when comics and cartoons ceased to be FUN (to read or create). That’s part of the reason I hate superhero comics, especially Batman. I fucking hate Batman most of all, glad LEGO movie showed his moody ass up. The only superhero ones I read after about 10 yo were 1940s Shazam!/Captain Marvel, Eisner’s The Spirit, and Jack Cole’s original Plastic Man, and the original Steve Gerber Howard the Duck. They were a balance of action, human, and good storytelling.

@Jai I would HIGHLY recommend for you anything Jack Kirby did in the 1970s. After he ditched Stan Lee’s rapacious ass and Marvel and went to DC (then briefly back to Marvel), he came up with some trippy non-superhero sci fi comics that made the Fantastic Four and Thor stuff he did for Marvel look like child’s play. When went to DC, he asked them what was they’re worst selling comic and could he have total control of it. He briefly made corny Jimmy Olsen one of the best sellers for DC.

Wow. So much history behind this guy. I would have never known. From listening to most folks...Stan was Good and the driving force behind Marvel.

Steve Lee was a PT Barnum. He would give artists like Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby very high level direction and they would actually create the characters and advance the plot through drawing. Yeah, his promotion helped put Marvel on the map, but Stan Lee was still a piece of shit that took credit for other people’s work. The way he treated artists was the impetus for the 1990s rise of independent artists starting their own companies to get away from DC and Marvel, like Rob Liefeld and Todd McFarlane at Image Comics (Spawn), or Dwayne McDuffie (Static Shock, Ben 10) and Milestone comics.

Speaking of independent comics, check out Eric Powell’s series The Goon and Hillbilly. I think you’ll especially like Hillybilly, as its Southern Gothic/Cajun style fantasy/sci fi.

Also check out Brotherman. While niggas want to sing the praises of corporate bullshit like Black Panther, Dawud Anyabwile was doing self-publishing of black comics before it was fashionable (1990)

    @Jai

Food for thought. All the characters in Avengers: Endgame were not created by “Marvel” or “Disney” but dozens of artists and writers over decades. Did Disney make sure they all got a piece of that nerd profit pie for their contribution to Disney’s valuation and EPS? Most of them are penniless. The creator of Guardian’s Rocket Racoon is disabled and his brother has gone bankrupt taking care of him for three decades.

As an artist: Always have a) a good editor b) a good lawyer

    That's a decent point actually.

    hello?

    -------------------------
I never fully got into the whole comic book thing. I've appreciate the odd movie here and there but I don't follow the lore/story arcs or anything like that.

I'm much more a Star Wars/Star Trek kinda guy and even still I slack on watching the movies lmao

@Jai I highly recommend you view the movie “Time After Time” with Malcolm McDowell and David Warner. This was my favorite sci-fi movie as a kid and it amazingly holds up well. There is almost zero special effects in this movie, but it proves that good writing, acting, and directing beat billions of dollars of CGI any day of the week.

Essentially, the movie is about HG Wells actually inventing a time machine rather than just writing about one. Unfortunately, and unbeknownst to him, it turns out that Well’s best friend is actually Jack the Ripper, who steals the time machine and travels to late 70s San Francisco. Wells spends the movie trying to track down ripper as he starts killing again in modern times. The movie was written by Nicolas Meyer, who wrote the best Star Trek film of all time (“Wrath of Khan”).

This scene, where Wells finally finds Ripper hiding out in a motel room, shows what great acting and dialogue in sci-fi should be (and why Harrison Ford rightly criticized George Lucas for lazy sci-fi dialogue writing); it’s almost downright Shakespearean.

I feel yah, while for me hate is too strong, Marvel gets to be too much for me at times. I prefer my SF to be hard as the dicks I like. My current hard SF favorite is the Expanse, unbelievably produced by the SciFi channel, I suppose it grows like a flower from the pile of alien/nazi/shark crap they usually create. The lead thirst trap character Steven Strait is a decent actor, but the rest of the cast provide the gritty satisfying human element of surviving in space. The attention to detail and respect for physics is epic. The zero g sex scene made me go ....strait... for a long minute.

I totally miss hard SciFi and much other type movies in general. While I don't actually hate superheroes guts...We get no Creative or inventive sci-fi. Movies that dabbled with the what if of our future. District 9, Event Horizon, Enemy Mine...etc. All we get today are Superhero movies and remakes of old popular movies. These movies are either by Stephen King or some other white writer.

Not to make it a race issue but Jordan Peele made some films but idk what to say about them or how he's using them for when using Blacks. Idk if this is some cinematic experience or what.

My type of superhero is Spawn.

As far as remakes, they basically just getting today's technology and replacing it with older bits seen in movies and make it seem weird.

How many Chuckie films have we had now? Pet Semetary did not have to be made over again & then given some silly change & turned into some silly political mishmash of foolishness.

I also want to see more diversity in science fiction and fantasy. Black people are not just slapstick comedy, hood and slave movies. And we aren't always meant to be the side-kick or secondary to others.

Someone told me black people aren't into sci-fi and fantasy and I find that hard to believe. There are tons of black Harry Potter fans but there's no black Harry Potter?

Amazon has it. They have three seasons out. Not knowing what to do, or how to manage and develop a sophisticated media property SyFy was going to cancel, drop the 4th season; but it turns out CEO Jeff Bezos is a fan of the show, and after Bezos received emails from people like "Game of Thrones" author George R.R.Martin he decided to put the "Expanse" on Amazon Prime.

Yea that always seems to be the case with a lot of their shows. Many of them end up being cult favorites and could survive another season or two but the funds aren't there initially

I also cannot stand all this superhero films, its like hollywood actors in UnderRoos gone wild...I do like guardians of the galaxy and very very few other ones but these movies are far too many and out of hand...

I have not bothered going to the theater since marvel took over the cinema..I mean its literally the same thing over and over and over, the cgi is too much..

If I ever say how much I hate it to my nerd friend its like omg dude but but but......

Gimme some mad max fury road and a bag of popcorn and im a happy camper..

I used to enjoy comic book movies before the extreme mass production of the never ending BS..... I find it hilarious seeing hollywood actors in silly costumes its too much

Flame me but it wont change my mind, gimme some batman with Nicholson ffs, used to be interesting before there was one superhero movie released every week

Im w/ you big bro. As I got older im not really a movie person. It has to be a really good movie or black one (just to support our ppl) for me to acually go to the movies to see it. Im also o like star wars star trek a lil better.

I totally agree w/ u and n understand ur view point. It just confused me w/ how much Hollywood has in money they cant just make a good creative original movie; not a remake n not a squeal/prequel. I also like sci-fi movies like District 9, Avatar, n Arrival.

Also I loved the Black Panther movie but....why ain't they never made a solo movie about Storm. I mean she was considered a Goddess in her African home place.

I know I saw somewhere, it wasn't on Reddit but basically a writer was saying that Hollywood is pretty much material made up off others work and rewritten or they are just a remake. I feel like my best shot is Netflix for anything. There are too many superhero movies. Sure the comic nerds might like it but comics and film are two different mediums, while I do think it's okay to adapt some, I'm up to here about all the amount.

Though, I don't have a sure argument, the majority of the dominant superhero movies feature white people as the main stars. The black superheroes of today outside of Black Panther are there.

You can't tell some comic book nerds anything though. I'm talking about the extreme ones. After I saw Iron Man, I knew more of these film weren't for me. Even though I found it enjoyable, it lacks substance. It doesn't make me think about our future or the possibility of technology in anyway. It's just a bunch of mindless action with a bunch of fit people jumping around wearing tight clothes.

Though Endgame wasn't terrible, I feel a bit annoyed that a film that isn't going to win an Oscar is 3 hours long.

So there was this Chinese film that came out and it really didn't get to much press because of Endgame. It was a science fiction film but one of the first grossing non foreign films (I think it was 2nd or 3rd) but it got kinda swept under the rug. The Wandering Earth.

Anyways, I don't want the comic nerds coming after me with flaming torches and pitch forks. I actually think it's cute to be a superhero nerd and even cuter to do bedroom roleplay as one but too much of that ain't good to me.

I'll tolerate my bf's antics but he know I'm not about to be in no theater for 3 hours.

I think Black Panther was cool but released strategically in February for "Black History Month" but up around and after that...not a peep from any other type of Black Hero on film.

Another annoyance is Game of Thrones. Not the show itself in a sense but how I'm hearing it gave people who looked down on fantasy to give it a chance.

I really hate that you have to have excessive violence and sex in something for it to give it a chance. Game of Thrones ain't original. Hell, the Holy Bible is the original Game of Thrones. Fantasy is fine as is, though Game of Thrones is more ofothe subgenre Dark Fantasy.

I'm working on a fantasy myself but it's mostly a Black/Arab tale called Nubian Rhapsody (sounds like a porn but bare with me). It's a short that I'm thinking g about doing since I was in love with Clash of the Titans and Sinbad the Sailor when I was tiny. I still do love Sinbad the Sailor..

Anyways, I love hearing about SciFi gems. I was lucky to group up in an era where the market wasn't dominated by Marvel aka Disney....Disney is a monster..lol

I just thought about this, seems appropriate to post in this thread. Wallace Wood, one of my illustration heroes, famously and anonymously drew this picture of Disney characters fucking and sodomizing each other in the 60s. I’m addition to being a great artist in his own right (the first major artist for Marvel’s Daredevil for example), he was great at mimicking other artists style. Sort of a Michael Winslow of cartooning (Mad Magazine used him a lot for this effect when it first started).

I guess it could be updated now that Disney has engulfed Star Wars, the Muppets, and now Avatar, The Simpsons, and Family Guy (Seth Macfarlane REALLY hates Walt Disney as he’s alluded to in a number of episodes).

Corporate engulfing of companies is interesting. I remember Disney suing Marvel over Howard the Duck when I was a kid because he was white and pants less. The artists at Marvel did a wonderful parody of the lawsuit by having a perverted haberdasher named Walt Sidney that owned a clothing store called “Pantasia” demand Howard the Duck start wearing pants and being bare assed (Mad magazine had mocked Disney and it’s sense of decent in one of its first issues by having police arrest characters for not wearing white gloves). So you never saw the character without pants after about 1981.
