Do you drive? If so, how much?

    I was just reading a report on where I live (Columbus area) and I saw an interesting statistic. In 1983 80% of 18 year olds had a driver's license. Now only 60% of 18 year old's have a driver's license.

    Are young people driving that much less? Do you live somewhere where you don't have to drive(like you lucky damn NYC people lol).?

    People used to rush out and get that license immediately back in the day. I knew ONE person who did not have a license by the time they were 18-out of everyone in my neighborhood.

    What about you? Why are you young people driving less or putting off getting a license?

    I live in DC metro area. I generally drive 5 to 10 miles per day in my own vehicle. Which is much less than what I used to drive 10 or even 15 years ago. I used to drive just for the pleasure of driving now I only drive to work, the gym, or the store. I generally drive 40 to 100 miles for work daily. I think the younger generation is "de-motorizing" because they can't afford to drive. The standard of living for most people is falling like lead balloon. The cost of vehicles and vehicle ownership has skyrocketed since the early 1980s while wages have remained flat or declined for most Americans. On top that many young people are buried under a mountain of student loan debt. It's shouldn't be surprising that young folks aren't rushing out to get a license or buy a car.

    I only drive when I go back home. I live in NYC, and while we're not as dependent upon cars as other places, quite a few nyers drive. Its mostly ppl who spend most of their time in their own boros, as those of us who rip n run across the city are more subway inclined.

    Yup, I'm one of those don't drive NYers since I gave my car away.
    There's Lyft car service, the subway and 2 strong legs to get me anywhere I need to get to around here.

    Yeah cost and all probably has a lot to do with it. All of that and sky high rents and all-the turning of the US into a neo-feudal state. smh.. I still wonder though why 40% do not at least get the license to drive, so if the opportunity comes up, if they need to, then they can.

    Every weekday Idrive 30mins to work and 30mins back.Even before I was old enough to drive I was never a fan of driving,or travel in general,just 'cause I hate being still for too long.I get restless.It wasn't until I was 20 that I even had a lisence.Before that I really wasn't going too many places ,and when I did I just pitched in for gas and got a ride.

    I live in downtown Atlanta and I drive pretty much drive everyday back and forth to school, work, etc....I just get uncomfortable with public transit but maybe I need to invest.
