Are Black Web Series Creators Teaching Us that Black Gay Men are nothing but sexual Objects?

The black gay content creators really believe that sex sells. I am not sure why more of the black gay content is not approached from a different angle than the more sexual tip.

 

This should have been posted on the main site. IDK, whatever. They sent us a press release and everything. We should probably have another CA meeting soon.

 

Hopefully the quality and critical reception of Moonlight will force people to step up their cinematic game.

I actually thought that was a PARODY of gay web series, it was really horrible; editing, acting, pacing. 69 From Outer Space.

You know, you and Ock. ought to just do a "Gay Cinema Sins" series, or MST3K commentary on these things.

Yeah there's a handful of shorts and films like this that exist, not many though. I just created a long list of new reviews and posts for the site yesterday that included some old & new obscure films, some featuring only Asians and Latinos (which still fits into the "gay men of color" mission statement for the site). I'll be trickling them out over the next couple months to keep fresh content on the main site, our most trafficked space. Everything from there auto-posts to The Boards too tho.

 

It seems like there is a recurring theme with these gay web series. Not all gay men are about having sex 24/7. Honestly, I can't watch a full episode of a gay web series without getting horny. So when I get horny, I just turn it off and go watch real porn. The lack of substantial content is a turn off

 

But sex does sell A LOT.

Nah, most directors are just being tested now. About Him is HUGE so some are abandoning their ways and trying to copy that success. But you still have those that stick to their guns and continue to produce good stories not soft core porn. 2017 is going to be a good year for lgbt black webseries...sexxed up or not.

 

You know sometimes it feels that way. I know Sex sells but theirs gotta be more besides show me your dick/ass it's so dehumanizing in away especially if there's no real outlets out there for you to express or see your self in

 

That would be cool I remember in the the late 90's/early 00 before logo became logo their website had a whole bunch shorts featuring a wide rage of shorts some featuring poc reveloving around different issues I miss it

I think it's moreso the fact that it's an easy formula. The fact that most ('many' would be more pc, but...)young gay men are so sexually promiscuous, it makes it a no brainer to have an instant audience by depicting the lives of an underrepresented demo in media.

I mean, the fact that that new show w arquez was #1 speaks volumes.

 

You might be selling young gay men short here while it's true that there is a lot of promiscuity am sure it reflect the same amount in the the straight world also.
And just because someone is promiscuous does it mean they have no other hobbies or aspersions? Of not just to become a superstar but for other simple things like the short above show to dance a waltz or kiss someone with out it being a "statement"

 

I get that young heteros are promiscuous also, the difference is that they're not seen as 1 dimensional. Young gay men are presumed hyper sexually active 20/30 somethings who go on to be single 40/50 year old uncles. Heteros may have one night stands, but they also have dates and relationships, and this is why their media depictions are so much more diverse.

This could get long winded, but I'll just say, no matter who wants to acknowledge it, your average hetero man and avg homo man are not the same.

 

I look at from a point of view that creators create things people want to watch. I think the problem is that the consumers don't want to watch high drama or sitcom comedy. They want sexy sloppiness. These web series provide that. I think the caricatures they depict are somewhat problematic and it just may be me but some of these characters are unrealistic from the get to go.

 

I understand what you're saying I just wanted to point out the portrait we paint of are community is one dimensional in itself. If you have to use sex make it show more then one dimension after all sex in it's self is more then one dimensional

Sex sells, it's that simple, especially when the product is so poor. The quality of the acting is generally abysmal, the sets are claustrophobic, the scripts inane, the sound quality poor. So if that is your package, you need a lot of package to sell it.

I've never seen any of the shows--actually, no I tried. I saw the promo for a different series and was flabbergasted when I recognized some of the 'actors' (is that what we're calling them now?) from my porn. And then deep-voice announcer dude was like, "wanna see moooooreee?". Hell yeah! Where's the pornhub link? Gimme the link dammit. I... need... the link.
