Just a reminder that Prep is not 100% effective in preventing HIV infection.

The comments are telling and interesting. Yes HIV is a disease and not god's punishment for being gay but why is it that some gay men attack anyone who questions promiscuous sexual activity and it's relation to HIV and other STI infections? Reminds me of how the gay community tried to prevent the closure of bath houses in the 70s when it was clear that HIV was spreading through there like wildfire.

Another key point ,that some have called out in the comments, is that it is recommended that gay men use condoms in conjunction with Prep. Particularly if you're having countless sexual partners. Conveniently, gay men see 99% and equate that to permission to have unprotected sex. STI infection rates are on the rise due to this careless thinking.

It ain't my flavor. I honestly, feel like porn is to blame for this partially. Ain't NO man getting up in me raw. I know condoms are not 100% but I find them aesthetically pleasing and hygienic.

Men these days will stick they stuff in anything. O cant imagine doing it. When I used gay day apps, I always said I will not participate in raw activities & do not tell me you are on PreP cause that ain't changing my mind at all.

I've never had an STI, STD or anything my entire life & my sex scroll is barely rolls out of my palm.

If you my man, you can bang me senseless all you want but it won't be raw. Haha.

Because they are adults and can make their own choices on who they have sex with and what types of sex they are having.

I think people have the right to do what they want as long as they are not hurting others. I am responsible for my own choices when it comes to the risk I take when I decide to get intimate with another man. They tell you when you get the RX that pRep is not a panacea for HIV nor does it prevent anything else. You don't have to keep telling people that every time they get the Rx filled. People still make these choices to go without condoms, which are not 100 percent themselves. Ideally, people would use both means but clearly, Tumblr and PornHub amateur porn is telling us something different.

I also feel that bathhouses and 'dirty book stores' serve their purposes as well. The 70s-80s was still in that era where 'it's not sex because it's with another man' was the train of thought for DL/Bi men. That age of denial is gone. However, I do think that people should have the access they want to explore be that at a sex club, bathhouse, or sex party. Everyone is not going to get your kink.

Even single gay men who have nothing to hide or may still be closeted and have everything to hide can go to those places and get their rocks off. They still chose what they do or don't there and can't blame anyone for any STI they pickup if they didn't t ake the action they needed to or just 'trusted the wrong person'. Most of us have had slip ups no matter how much we may say 'I use condoms 100 percent of the time'. Humans make mistakes and don't always follow their own rules. Even on prep, I may forget to take a pill one or two days out of the month.

Since prep isn't 100 percent, this just proves how it is not. There's really nothing to see here. Millions of people are having sex daily. Factoring that into account, the number is infections people developed while on prep is still low.

    Also...
The guy was on a rare form of HIV and wasn't taking his meds. This would have happened even if the guy wasn't taking prep. It's just one of those things. Unfortunately, this man did everything he could have to prevent acquiring HIV but that wasn't enough to prevent his infection. If I was this man, I'd be beyond pissed off that the positive man wasn't taking better care of protecting other people. He put this man at even greater risk than he bargained for.

However... it was his risk and choice to take. The sky isn't falling.

    Well said.

It is very important that there are options of things to use/take on behalf of safeguarding one's self from STIs. But reality gives people the choice to do what they want regardless.

The next push with PreP/PEP is to educate women on it. It is a great inititative. However, there are going to be women still going raw, especially those who still believe HIV is "for them faggies..." and Dayquantray ain't gay bc "he don't look gay..." and feel that she only will have to worry about getting pregnant.

@ControlledXaos and @Dante all good points. Hopefully our resident PReP expert and communicator @takeyourmeds91 chimes in.

I’ve been on it for my first round all this summer. It’s important for everyone to be super honest about health, conditions, etc. My doc is one of the only VA mds trained and licensed to prescribe it so I got lucky. My civilian doc was a nice guy but knew less about Truvada and it’s issues than I did! I just recently had my first round of follow-up blood and kidney tests and should get my results this week.

That being said, it’s important that partners disclose medical info honestly. This is also where that previous thread about class issues might come into play, thanks to political bullshit about health coverage and who has or may need it. PReP ain’t cheap and neither are HIV meds. And the current wave of Bible Thumper Bullshit in our federal health policy ain’t helping. And keep in mind, the Federal govt ain’t shit in natural disaster responses, so with all these hurricanes will rural or southern folk miss on out on meds and health care for weeks or months after an event? Dudes who may not have access to good health care may not be able to monitor their status.

Unlike the guy in this article, positive guys with good health care are generally up on their strains and viral detectability. There’s a lot of research that serodiscordant couples (one pos and undetectable, one negative) statistically avoid seroconversion if BOTH stay honest on meds and communicating health conditions. We also need to have drug and alcohol discussions and exercise. There are different HIV strains so you can never tell, but I’m sure one of the reasons guys like Magic Johnson and Bill T. Jones can not only survive but professional thrive with HIV is that they are taking good physical care of themselves.

Bottom line, know your shit and stop acting like some movie teen in American Pie thinking sex doesn’t require thought and preparation; or that we live in a STI-free celluloid / Instagram world.

Yea, I don't have much more to add. Not sure why this is news other than a failed attempt at scare tactics or some attempt to discredit the drug which is even more irresponsible.

PrEP is not 100% - no drug we prescribe is 100% effective. This should serve as a reminder to continue the medication, be more particular and limit your sexual partners, urge seropositive long-term partners to take their meds, and combine prevention methods.

If you decide that you don't mind getting it in with whomever, more power to you but also be able to accept the consequences and be honest with future partners.

While grown folks are able to make their own decisions, I just wished folks cared more about themselves to not put themselves at such extreme risk with excessive anonymous sex.

There it is folks. I just realized Friday that candy dish on my docs desk was condoms. So, before he walked in, I was like “oh, don’t mind if I do...” grabbing a handful and stuffing in my pocket lol.

I just have to remind him to put some Magnum XL in that jar not generic Lifestyles....

I say just look out for #1. I'm not putting myself at risk for the next mofo. If condoms and Prep are what it takes, then so be it.
