Men with deep-rooted homosexual tendencies should not be admitted to the Catholic clergy, and it would be better for priests who are actively gay to leave rather than lead a double life, Pope Francis says in a new book.

While he has previously spoken of the need for better screening of candidates for the religious life, his comments suggesting that priests who cannot keep their vows of celibacy should leave are some of his clearest to date.

Francis made the comments in a book-length interview with Spanish priest Fernando Prado called “The Strength of Vocation”, in which he discusses the challenges of being a priest or nun today.

Francis said in the book that homosexuality in the Church “is something that worries me”. It is due to be published this week in several languages. An advance copy of the Italian version was made available to Reuters.

“The question of homosexuality is a very serious one,” he said, adding that those entrusted with training men to be priests must be certain that candidates are “humanly and emotionally mature” before they can be ordained.

This also applied to women who wanted to enter female religious communities to become nuns. In the Catholic Church, priests, nuns and monks all take vows of celibacy.

The Church teaches that homosexual tendencies are not sinful in themselves, but homosexual acts are.

Francis said there was “no room for this” in the lives of priests and nuns, adding that the Church had to be “demanding” in choosing candidates for what is known as the consecrated life.

“For this reason, the Church urges that persons with this rooted tendency not be accepted into (priestly) ministry or consecrated life,” he said.

    “BETTER TO LEAVE”
He urged homosexuals who are already priests or nuns to be celibate and responsible to avoid creating scandal. “It is better that they leave the priesthood or the consecrated life rather than live a double life,” he said.

The interview was conducted in mid-August. Less than two weeks later, on Aug. 26, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, the Vatican’s former ambassador to the Vatican, threw the Church into turmoil with a bombshell statement against the pope and Vatican officials.

Vigano said a “homosexual network” existed in the Vatican, whose members helped promote each other’s careers in the Church.

He also accused the pope of having ignored alleged sexual misconduct with adult male seminarians by former American cardinal Theodore McCarrick, 88.

The Vatican said Vigano’s accusations were riddled with “calumny and defamation”.

The Catholic Church has been haunted for more than two decades by evidence of thousands of cases of sexual abuse of minors by clergy around the world, in countries ranging from the United States to Australia, Ireland, Belgium, Germany and Chile.

In July, McCarrick became the first cardinal to resign in nearly 100 years after U.S. Church officials said allegations made in a separate investigation that he had sexually abused a 16-year-old boy almost 50 years ago were credible and substantiated.

McCarrick has said he had no recollection of the alleged abuse of the minor, but has not commented on the allegations of misconduct with the seminarians, which allegedly took place decades ago.

What caught my eye when I read that was his emphasis on gay ones being celibate, not straight ones, even though aren’t they are all supposed to be celibate, ya? The Catholic Church is all kinds of mental fuckery. The sexual history of the Catholic Church makes Game of Thrones look like Sesame Street.

    Fuck the Pope...

Gay priests are being scapegoated for the pedophilia scandal gripping the RCC. Instead getting rid of the pedophiles in the priesthood and turning them over to the police they covered it up for generations. Now they're trying vilify gay priests. This shows how the pope and the Catholic church talk out of both sides of their mouth when it comes to homosexuality. In this day and age I wonder why any gay man would want to be a priest. I could understand in the past why gay men would try to hide in the priesthood. But now it just seems like an exercise in futility. Then again I don't understand why anyone would be a Catholic especially a gay person considering the hideous things the Catholic church has done and continues to do to gay people.

The Church continues to struggle with the immorality of its Priests and Bishops abusing children. The Church wants to blame someone or some group so they have to target the homosexuals without explicitly targeting gays. Its a fucking dog whistle. As the Church continues hemorrhaging its flock it is becoming more and more desperate. After all, The Holy Father is a businessman first and man of god second.

Queer Catholics Condemn Pope’s Claim That Being Gay Has Become ‘Fashionable’

Pope Francis has suggested that being gay has become “fashionable” in some modern-day societies ― a remark that has prompted concern among queer Catholics.

In an interview with a Spanish priest about religious vocations, Francis reportedly said that there is “no place for this kind of affection” in the lives of Roman Catholic priests, religious brothers and religious sisters.

“In our societies, it even seems homosexuality is fashionable. And this mentality, in some way, also influences the life of the church,” Francis was quoted as saying in the interview, according to the Associated Press.

Marianne Duddy-Burke, executive director of the queer Catholic advocacy group DignityUSA, said she thinks Francis is treating the “genuine but limited progress” some countries have achieved in recognizing queer people’s basic human rights as a “frivolous fad or trend.”

But queer identities aren’t a “matter of fashion,” Duddy-Burke said in a statement on Monday.

“Any gains that have been made in achieving LGBTQI rights in recent decades have come at the cost of incalculable pain and sacrifice by LGBTQI people,” she said. “Rather than belittle such progress, the Pope should examine how the Catholic Church has contributed to the unjust oppression of LGBTQI people for centuries, and how its unsung LGBTQI clergy and vowed religious men and women have contributed immeasurably to the good it has done.”

Francis’ remarks were part of a four-hour-long interview he had in August with the missionary priest Fernando Prado. The Strength of Vocation, a book containing a transcript of the interview, will be published in 10 languages next week. Excerpts from the book appeared on the Italian news website Corriere della Sera on Saturday.
In the excerpts, Francis said that homosexuality in the Catholic Church is something that “worries” him. He said seminaries and convents should take great care to screen out gay and lesbian applicants who may not keep their vows to celibacy.

“The Church urges that persons with this rooted tendency not be accepted into (priestly) ministry or consecrated life,” he said in the interview, according to Reuters.

He urged queer priests and nuns who have already taken their vows (which include a vow of celibacy) to in fact remain celibate. If they can’t, Francis said, “it is better that they leave the priesthood or the consecrated life rather than live a double life.”

Duddy-Burke said Francis’ comments suggest that gay and lesbian Catholics are somehow less able than their straight peers to commit themselves to religious life. The comments also portray LGBTQ Catholics as a threat to the church, she said. .

“His comments reinforce negative and long discredited stereotypes that have led to discrimination and violence against our community,” Duddy-Burke said. “Furthermore, they are demeaning to all the lesbian sisters and gay priests and brothers who have faithfully served the church for decades, and to all who are currently preparing for such ministries.”

Catholic doctrine teaches that there’s a difference between experiencing same-sex attraction and acting on these feelings. While the church preaches that gay and lesbian Catholics should be “accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity,” it still claims that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.”

In 2005, under Pope Benedict XVI’s watch, the Vatican declared that priesthood candidates who have “deep-seated homosexual tendencies” or support “gay culture” should not be ordained.

For his part, Francis has taken a “love the sinner, hate the sin” approach towards LGBTQ Catholics. He’s made several welcoming gestures ― including reportedly telling a gay sex-abuse survivor in May that “God made you this way.” But ultimately, the pontiff remains loyal to church teaching.

Days after his conversation with the abuse survivor, Francis reportedly advised Italian bishops to “keep your eyes open” for priesthood applicants who may be gay.

“If in doubt, better not let them enter,” he said at the meeting, according to Reuters.

Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit author who for years has urged greater dialogue between the church and LGBTQ Catholics, suggested on Twitter that Francis wasn’t arguing against the ordination of gay priests as a whole, but specifically against gay priests who don’t lead celibate lives.

Still, Martin said, Francis’ words about homosexuality being “fashionable” were “wrong and hurtful.”

“It goes against every reputable psychiatrist and, more important, the experience of LGBT people,” Martin wrote on Twitter Monday.

Robert Shine, associate director of the queer Catholic advocacy group New Ways Ministry, said in a blog post that Francis has “much to learn” about sexuality and gender issues.

“The closet in which so many lesbian, gay, and bisexual clergy and religious are forced is destructive,” Shine wrote. “The culture of shame such exclusionary policies enforce harms the entire People of God.”

I didn’t know George Harrison was the Catholic Beatle until recently (before he became a Hindu). Your last sentence reminded me of the final words of one of his solo songs that mocked his religious upbringing (“Awaiting On You All”):

And while the Pope owns fifty one percent of General Motors
And the stock exchange is the only thing he's qualified to quote us

And even though he was a believer himself, he didn’t mind financing any Monty Python related film that dissed the church. One of my favorites, where they explain the Trinity:

Although my favorite movie was when the Trinity fought Godzilla

I can't when folks say you can be Gay but just don't act on it. The Mormon and Jehovah's Witness have the same thing. Personally, I like the lines to be drawn clearly btw me and my enemies. Any gay priest, Altar boy, Usher, Choir master/singer etc that still sets foot in the church looking for any kind of community, fellowship or acceptance is a FUCKING IDIOT! I say that also to folks that go to LGBTQ welcoming/friendly churches.

It has occurred to me that the Tumblr is doing what Catholic Church is doing instead of dealing with removing pedophiles they're shifting the blame to people who are just doing their thing and not harming kids because they really don't want to put any effort into solving the real problem.

We're are in total agreement on this. Gay Christians are out of their fucking minds to support an institution like the church which is responsible for our oppression. The same applies to gay Muslims. I hear them make the same excuses as gay Christians. Lucky for the guys making these ridiculous arguments they live in the USA or some other western country or they might be hung, thrown off a building, burned to death, or have their head smashed in with very large rock in a Muslim majority country.
