For Throwback Thursday we revisit one of our first short films we featured on the site (over 7 years ago) which happens to also be one of our favorites exploring the act of ‘hooking-up’. I remember when I first watched the short and the feeling of tension and empathy I felt for both characters. When describing the short, site co-founder Nick Delmacy stated:

“…the short film “SLOW” gives viewers a (somewhat) realistic view of an “online hookup” between (somewhat) masculine men. Crazy Dope cinematography and believable acting give this an authentic “fly on the wall” feel that made me almost uncomfortable watching. Even more impressive is that this film was shot with NO BUDGET in the director’s own apartment. He negates any excuse other filmmakers have about the shortcomings of their own independent films. DISCLAIMER: The short features some nudity so it’s technically NSFW.”

Actually thought that that young brother would blow up to be a major director after seeing his short films years ago, like Barry Jenkins. “Slow” is way more than a look at hooking up. Really, really deep ending.

Also check out his other shorts, all of them have multiple levels to them...

I remember this; one of my fave SGL themed videos. It's amazing how for we have gone in the media. To think at one time this short clip Noah's Arc and DL Chronicles were the only thing we had.

I just like the way it was set up. U think its a normal date then boom its suppose to be a hookup. U think he can see then boom u find out he was blind lol.

I just like it been a black sgl short vid with good acting n good quality.

I guess Its more a matter of taste for me.

I guess for me I hadnt seen a lot of black sgl stuff out at that time.

No need to defend it bro. I was just curious about what you got from it. I feel like it's open to so much interpretation and can elicit so many feelings. What one person saw could have been completely different from another. perspective.

I think that's what art is - sometimes that type of open interpretation can be satisfying while other times, people want a concrete answer. This was the former lol.

    --------------

    I have so many questions.

Why did he feel the need to be "hooked up"? Does he have trouble finding guys who will engage him? Is this a larger look at how we push people to the margins of society forcing them to engage in activities like these to feel human? Are we looking at two different people who found each other within the outskirts of society for very different reasons? Do you think ol dude is a grower? lmao

All this lol. There’s so much to it. On one hand, it appears that the blind guy needs is/looking for any kind of friendship but maybe his disability is prevents him from reaching any. In the initial phone convo, he reveals it’s his sister who set him up for his encounter but he didn’t even know how she worded the ad. Either sis just thought he needed a good smashing, or had some naïveté regarding what gay hookup ads are about.

He’s obviously looking for companionship, not just some dick and ass, as he goes through the trouble of making of his guest’s favorite meal. The other dude is just hit it and quit. By the end, he’s feeling sorry for both misinterpreting the blind guy’s intentions, recognizing the blind guy’s good heart, and his own lack of emotional depth? Perhaps “Slow” is a comment on how gay/bi men need to be less superficial and take things slow instead of the usual fuck first/get to know your and my emotions later culture?

It’s a shame that there are talented actors like these brothers while Hollywood and mainstream cinema picks a set of black faces to be the black actor go-to’s for everything black, leaving so many in the dust. I now have a little more respect for Seth McFarlane after reading @Nick Delmacy Orville thread.

And as I type this, ANOTHER LEVEL just hit me lol. The whole blind man offering a rapacious creature a meal and companionship is a crucial scene in “The Bride of Frankenstein”, considered a cinematic classic and another scene that had subtle commentary of need for companionship and the need for emotional and spiritual love versus just carnal lousy and fulfillment (the monster’s desire for a mate). And because director James Whale was openly gay in such a vicious time (1930s), there are all kinds of homosexual relationship undertones to that film too

Wow! That was a very interesting association. The human experience transcends time. I love how you were able to tie those pieces together
