White Americans who are at risk of HIV are seven times more likely than blacks to receive a daily oral pill shown to be extremely effective at preventing infection, according to official statistics published Tuesday.

The figures released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) underscore that racial disparities remain a core challenge for the administration of President Donald Trump in its stated goal of ending the HIV epidemic by 2030.

At-risk racial minorities and people in lower income brackets are less likely to know about pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, or to get a prescription from a doctor even if they are aware of its benefits.

PrEP, which has been available since 2012, includes two HIV antiretroviral medications and reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99 percent when taken daily, according to studies cited by the CDC.

“We can end the status quo providing that we change our expectations and the culture of satisfaction where we’re at now,” Jay Butler, the CDC’s deputy director of infectious diseases said during a teleconference with reporters.

PrEP coverage grew to 18 percent of the at-risk population of 1.2 million people in 2018, against just 9 percent in 2016.

But the rise glosses over glaring disparities: the drug was used by 42 percent of at-risk whites, 11 percent of Hispanic/Latinos and just six percent of blacks.

There’s also dramatic regional variation, with 41 percent covered in New York, a percentage that drops to single digits in several less wealthy states.

Racial differences also arise in the percentage of people diagnosed with HIV who have access to retroviral drugs that effectively reduce the viral load to the point it is undetectable after six months and cannot be transmitted on to others.

Fifty-seven percent of diagnosed black Americans had a suppressed viral load against 69 percent of whites.

Many HIV-positive black people lack health coverage, are homeless or in prison, said the CDC, factors that make taking daily medications much more complicated.

The CDC found that two-thirds of new HIV diagnoses in 2018 were among blacks and Hispanic/Latinos.

There also seems to be a concerted effort amongst Black ppl with a platform to sway ppl away from PrEP, saying it leads to kidney failure, amongst other things.

If niggas spent half their time studying math and science as they do making up hotep conspiracy theories they might learn something. I REALLY dont give two fucks about idiot celebrities who dont know shit about science mouthing off. As if anti-science white dumb fucks like Tom Cruise and Robert Kennedy weren't bad enough....

The medical literature on PReP is well established. There's a statistical possibility that any medication will have an adverse effect on any segment of a given population. It's called risk-benefit analysis. Not taking PReP when youre part of the risk profile population AND it's about to become FREE FOR THE TAKING is beyond responsible and stupid.

Gilead, HHS kick off program to provide PrEP drugs Truvada, Descovy for free

Those of us on PReP get tested 4 times a year to ensure our HIV status AS WELL AS kidney functioning, etc. We've had doctors ON THIS SITE go over the mechanics of the process. Sometimes I just want to take the idiots in the black community and do their asses like Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge....

Fuck Azelia Banks. Bitch, go get a medical degree and shut the fuck up. In 2020, I'm not tolerating stupid black peoples' shit any more than I tolerate Trump and MAGA whites....

I started pRep just under 2months ago. A nikka aint fkn but better safe than sorry. The consultant was straight up about the possibility of kidney issues from jump. I have to go back and do a test matter fact, to see if its affecting me thus far.

Only reason I got on PrEP was due to a false positive blood test that I wrote about here: My Doctor Told Me That I Tested HIV Positive...And I was Like...

So I started taking it and had zero kidney issues after the first three months...but on top of condom use, I'm super selective on who I mess around around with so 9 times out of 10, they likely wouldn't be HIV+ either...plus I'm a Top 99% of the time so that reduces the risk factor as well. But it's sad to say that I've invested more time into porn and masturbation that I have in getting actual sexual partners. So I stopped taking the PrEp because I just wasn't having enough sex to justify it. I stopped maybe around August or so after about 6 months.

I've been stocking them up though, so may start back up in case I get sexually aggressive again in the new year. I'm still a paranoid hypochondriac and I live in Atlanta, a city the CDC says is filled with HIV+ Black gay and bisexual men...so PrEp does give a slight extra sense of security.

    It's complicated
I have a hard time understanding the reason behind AA not knowing about PrEP. If you're gay and have ears and eyesight, you have to have heard about or seen advertisements, billboards, articles about this medication. It's being given away practically at no cost so it makes no sense why AA are still being impacted by HIV at such an alarming rate. I've gotten into trouble in the past for saying that if you contract HIV in this day and age then you kinda wanted it. I don't mean that literally but it's just like women popping up pregnant and then having breakdowns when you know your ass wasn't taking your birth control. Too many things to prevent unwanted pregnancies and STD transmissions these days. Not sure why us Black folk still aren't getting this.

There are areas in the deep south to where these observations / judgements don't apply. It has been highlighted on the boards before.

This is disturbing, There is a great deal of misinformation in black and brown communities. There are also significant medical professional disparities in black and brown communities. Many doctors and medical practitioners in the deep south and rural and some urban centers are not educated on the PreP and often do not engage in sexual health questioning or screening. The clinics and health centers that do provide services are grossly underresourced. What I don't understand is why Public Health Departments are not doing campaigns...well I do know why...HIV despite the disparities in black and brown communities pail in comparison to heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension.

With that being said, if you are an at-risk person or a person who is exposed to at-risk people, I don't see why you would go to your nearest LGBTQ Center/Health Clinic/or Primary Care Provider and get you a script for PreP...it is practically free in most cases and for sure if you have health insurance.
