Keeping up with the evolution of media distribution has always been quite fascinating to me. Remember TiVo? At the time, I was working in Bravo’s Program Planning Department and even we had difficulties truly gauging accurate ratings. Live TV officially became a thing of the past right before our eyes.

From Blockbuster to Netflix. From transferring your favorite 90s slow jam from radio to cassette tape to now streaming via Bluetooth on Tidal or Spotify, the convenience of technology has always been in the consumer’s favor. But what about the creatives? When does the talent get to benefit in an industry with glass ceilings so low you can barely stand? Sure, YouTube has independently manufactured some of today’s biggest stars, but the platform does not cater to all genres.

The adult film industry has been an interest to monitor. Not so much the racy content, but the way it’s getting to the persistent consumers. It was just last week when I was at the legendary Stonewall Inn in New York City where I won a porn DVD at Monday’s Drag Bingo. Although grateful, I have nowhere to play it! I don’t own a DVD player. Neither laptops nor new vehicles accommodate tangible discs anymore. “Sir I’m sorry, I physically can’t play your rap demo!” Streaming is the way to go, and finally, select platforms are not setting boundaries for creatives to distribute their own content.

Based out of London, OnlyFans is a subscription-based service that allows creatives to post exclusive content on their feed for their paying “fans”. Photos and videos range from fitness instructors, healthy eating experts, and indie musicians. But OnlyFans’ progressive policy allowing sex and nudity has put an ongoing shift in the adult film industry. Not only are many of our favorite porn actors skipping studio lit auditions and creating sizzling independent footage in the comfort of their own satin sheets, but any and everyone is able to financially benefit from OnlyFans’ digital paywall.

A few of our favorite infamous insta-celebrities, including Dallas “Flashman” Wade & Deven Hubbard, have used their organic pro bono built following on social media to promote their separate paywall accounts. Followers with inquiring minds who do not mind paying for the content are able to personally venture beyond a tapped “like”. Since Tumblr banned nudity in an abrupt and disheartening policy change late 2018, Twitter (whose policy allows adult content) has also been instrumental with navigating and redirecting fans new and old to subscribe to get more than a short, yet explicit, video trailer or a traditional thirst trap.

Just like Lyft or Uber, many use OnlyFans to earn an income for a variety of reasons. Whether in between jobs, looking for some weekend cash, or enjoy the flexibility of working on your own time, members are able to monetarily gain when desired.

“I needed to find a place to live in a short amount of time. I needed to come up with a security deposit and month’s rent in order to move into a new apartment to start my new full-time job,” explained OnlyFans contributor TropDaddy. “That was in May 2018. I’ve kept it going since then, although it wasn’t until March 2019 that I put the link on my Twitter. It has picked up since then.”

Right now, TropDaddy is making more money through OnlyFans than at his fulltime professional job. With nearly 800 growing fans at $10 a month, after OnlyFans commission payout replenished by a few tips from viewers, he brought in $5,668.93 in the month of April 2019.

Not bad when the only production overhead is a standard data plan.

Some people use OnlyFans as a vessel to express sexually liberation. Recent member DialoTheGod said he opened his account to have a little fun and secure the bag at the same time.

Social media posts seem to be coming around to accepting that you don’t have to be a well-trained porn star to make money in the adult industry. Although there is still a lot of sex shaming, more and more people are publically supporting those who have made the adult decision to stream nudity online and earn an income.

Obviously, not everyone is going to be on your side. DialoTheGod pubically shared a story on his Twitter about how his family caught wind of his taboo hobby.

“My grandmother and aunt found out I had an OnlyFans from a disgruntled cousin…” he recounted. “They just asked me about, I told them ‘yes’, and they were just like ‘hey, you’re grown’… ”

TropDaddy was in a romantic relationship when he first started his account. Although they did not last together, he plans on being forthcoming with future dating situations, as he was with his ex. So far, although some may quietly pass judgment, the effects of displaying their body online thankfully have not had major repercussions on both interviewee’s personal life when it comes to dating and the professional workplace.

This is one of the most sex-positive moments I’ve seen in a while. Sexuality has been demonized and invaluably fetishized since the beginning of time, especially for women, the LGBTQ community, and for people of color. It slows in the lack of asked questions and surface level sex education when it comes to black gay men and new HIV diagnoses.

We reflect on the ignorant statement from Victory Secret’s former CEO insinuating that trans and plus size women do not fit the “fantasy” people are looking for in a lingerie runway show. The comment received backlash, mostly because trans and plus sized women are indeed the fantasy. But because of stigma, shame and society’s often unrealistic standard of “beauty”, the general public only speaks of these desires behind closed doors.

Standards are slowly moving. People are taking control of their narrative, even when it comes to sex. You don’t necessarily have to look like a fitness model jacked on steroids to be accepted as sexually desirable and make a living. Porn actors who have been working for years do not have to wait for the “Yes Man” to get paid for the content they work on. Obviously, there is criticism with OnlyFans and its content creators, one being the unprofessional production quality. But just like YouTube, I predict that with time and saturation, the standard for production and creativity will slowly rise and evolve as fans expect more, especially if their credit card is on file.

People are willing to pay for the content that they want. YouTube’s model has worked for years pushing out free videos to the viewers. Advertisers have jumped on that model making YouTube billions of dollars. However, if you don’t hit a certain amount of views per video, the majority of creatives who actually keep YouTube running will never see a dime. Whether it be your favorite singer or adult star you want to digitally experience, people genuinely want to support people directly and cut out the middle man if the price is fair. I foresee see blockchain technology and cryptocurrency making another major shift in the industry.

… At the end of the day, when it comes to anything in life we have to ask ourselves, “is it worth it?”

Both interviews gave an apologetic, “yes”, at least for now.

“It’s making a lot of things possible for me… I’d like to use this money to start a business of my own. Whether that be a swim line or a fitness business, or both!...” said TropDaddy. “I think I still am a little bit nervous about it (he does not show face in videos), but I have student loans and other bills to pay, and my professional job isn’t cutting it.”

DialoTheGod, who has incorporated a “raffle ticket” element in his video production to get the audience more engaged is enjoying the journey. He wants to explore the sexy in having sex with a condom and even wants to incorporate education behind Oraqwik’s rapid HIV tests in his videos and posts.

“To even have a fan base is still mind-boggling at times,” says DialoTheGod,“I’m in disbelief most times, but I’d say that I love all of my fans because the adoration is priceless… live out loud like nobody is watching.”

Personally, I’m not mad at all.

    Make ya coins, sis!

Porn is about fantasy so I like how the fans can influence the featured performers rather than that being decided by a studio (who usually don't always get it right because of overhead)

Im for it and I'm not for it. I think OnlyFans is kind of stupid considering most of it will end up on Myvidster or Pornhub. The content that most folks put on their OnlyFans you can find for free by searching on Pornhub or Xtube or wherever they put vids.

I respect the "hustle" in it's own right. I don't agree with him saying sex has been demonized. People are allowed to experience sex, it's just that people do sexual stuff without thinking about the consequences.

The idea that anyone can do porn is true, but good HQ porn is a lie. I'd be a fool if I paid for some shoddy clips taken off someone's camera roll. I mean who pays to watch someone take a shower? That is so boring, at least to me. So I should say, I personally find watching a man take a shower boring.. I wanna see him f**k in a variety of angles.

If I do watch porn, studio porn still is better. Better lighting, camera angles...etc. They actually played off fantasies such Army, Roommates, My best friends, etc...

I think OnlyFans is a sign that people will pay for anything these days and that quality doesn't matter. considering you like in mainstream for a better value.

I have watched some vinatge porn and they were actually interesting. I'm talking older ones from the 70s. Way ahead of my time. They had at the very least, a cinematic structure. I know that sounds weird but it was like looking at retro erotic art or something.

I watched some OnlyFans stuff before and it was just empty. Why pay $10 per dude for three to four different dudes just to see general content then pay for private content when you can pay for a full subscription to a site with a variety of content and access to more models?

As far as making money, it's good you can make money that way on OnlyFans though. I thought about it but I changed my mind eventually... I was thinking about it since I became self employed but I was like..Nah. Def not dragging bae into it either..I do believe I am creative and (kinky) enough to come up with sexy content though..

I'll probably do porn after I retire. Old Man porn is an untapped market. I'll be out of fucks to care by then. I got to pay for my scripts some how.
