Yes many of them are...and I have had two very similar situations as you described.

I don't know how old you are but I would say try not to allow it to impact you too much. You don't want to become isolated, overly cautious and a cynical angry tortured bastard like me. To the point where you want zero contact with other non-heterosexual men. I have and continue to possibly miss out on some cool male relationships.
