Closing Thoughts

    What are the things you contemplate on your way to sleep? Do you pray? If so ,for what?
    Do you plan? Or do you let your mind chatter until you slip away?

    My background noise in my mind can easily devolve in abolute madness,so I try to focus on certain things.

    My usual pre-slumber agenda is as follows :


    +Getting past negative emotions that may have ruined my day.Letting things fester can be a problem for me. Releasing that tension makes it that much easier to sleep.

    +Asking for strength and healthy bonds for the most important relationships in my life.Hopefully all the people in my life feel appreciated,but i can admit I am bad about getting out of my bubble and checking on people.

    +Sometimes I think of traits that I want for myself to become a better realized version of myself.They might be weaknesses i need to remedy or things I have yet to achieve or refine .

    +And I think of want I want for the future,and what i hope to gain from the next day's experience.Sometimes it means advancing in a certain area.Other times it means I want to see so&so again to flirt.Most of the times it's centered around which brand of pizza and/or chips I'll be having for dinner.


    Of course it takes me forever to get drowsy,so this can go on for hours.

    I have always had trouble going to sleep so if I think about anything it is to try to not think about not being able to fall asleep. Making the environment right helps-not too cool, not too hot, and reading can tire my mind out-especially something I like and have read before. Pondering the future is not something I want to do if I am trying to fall asleep-I don't want to be thinking of anything deep-that will not ease me into slumber.

    My room is usually ice freeing cold and I have an audiobook or something Ive read before going.That way I'm not trying to stay alert to find out where the story goes,and my mind is free to get lost in familiar images until I doze off.

    I drink a nice strong gin and tonic and take 3 Benadryl...

    Lol jk, I have an app on my ipad that plays rain sounds. That will generally do it. Sometimes I'll play very low music. I find it hard to go to sleep in complete silence unless I'm dead tired.

    This! I suffer from insomnia, so I usually try to work until exhsusted. I have a Spotify playlist of rain and oceans sounds to fall asleep. This time of year, for some reason, the song birds, owls and woodpeckers all seem to congregate in my neighborhood (must be an urban rest area for birds on their way to less dangerous cities) so I don't need Spotify. Basically, if it's *nature* doing its thing, however loudly, I can eventually fall sleep.

    Pondering usually feeds my insomnia, so bedtime is the one time I usually will tolerate mindless crap like "Dish Nation" or "TMZ" on the tube as the inanity numbs my conscious mind and I can sleep with the TV on.

    I have a ritual of listening to "soft sounds" or maybe a motivational speaker. I first must empty myself of( all/if any) stupidity, disappointments, or frustrations taken place during the day.

    lol 'That is some white people shit'. I think there is some truth to that. If it is in the 40's people are out in shorts and flip flops around here sometimes. I have seen people in shorts and it is snowing out. I like it at 62 to sleep now but only in the summer(when it is hot outside). When it is cold(especially very cold) in the winter, it is at 80 inside for me to sleep well. I think that must be some white people shit too. Maybe some kind of 'control' issues with the weather lol.

    I also sleep with the lights on. don't judge me. They need to be on.

    Man, I'll take hungry bear and coyote sounds at night over some of the human sh*t I hear at night. I just live in Chiraq, I ain't from here.I need some Whole Foods soundtrack to get my snore on. Where I come from, black folks don't eat lead for breakfast.

    LOL I like your first idea ,I should try that lol.
    But i need noise too.Silence stimulates my brain too much to try to fill it with some kinda activity.It's more conducive for me to get lost in the noise when I want to sleep.

    The one thing that worked for me was to do an hour on an elliptical right before turning in. I slept like a baby. Since I'm in a different city and use the work gym, it's back to 3 a.m. reading sessions.

    I have chronic insomnia that's induced by anxiety, so getting to sleep can be tricky because I'm constantly thinking about something. My thoughts keep me from sleep, so my strategy is to stay busy around the house until around 9 and find something I can watch on TV until I get sleepy, which won't take long. Even if I don't feel like I'm not sleepy, I know that I am and it's a matter of just getting in the bed at a certain time, laying down and falling asleep. My mind has to be clear before I can relax.

    If I'm anxious about something, miss my window for getting in the bed (between 930 and 1130 usually), or have some other disruption, the insomnia will kick in. Ambien or a good indica are helpful in these cases.

    I take Benadryl(one of the few things that works for my allergies-even the expensive stuff does not do as well)so I take it at night and Melatonin as well. I find the Melatonin really does help. Maybe TMI, but jerking off can help too lol.

    I have to have either Family Guy or American Dad playing on my lap top in order to fall asleep. smh I'm such a weirdo, when the streaming acts up and shuts down, the silence wakes me up.

    Honestly, I have been known to have a drink after a night shift but I don't mix the two haha

    Haha you're not the first to say that

    Yea, that's kind of the downside to playing background noise

    Yep, that's a problem for me too. If I happen to fall asleep early, I'll be up about that time. That's part of the reason I busy myself, because if I have been sleep deprived, my body will want to shut down as early as 6 or 7p. I'm one of those types where any disruption in a regular sleep schedule will throw everything off.

    If all goes well, I read a half page of a book, turn out the light and fall asleep immediately and wake up 5 to 6 hours later. If all does not go well, I read a half page, turn out the light, fall asleep immediately and wake up 2 to 3 hours later and do not go back to sleep. That's when I lay in bed, run through a check list of things I'm behind on, things I don't want to do. If it is really bad I review past relationships, and if things are really, really bad, I review dread inducing hook-ups. Sadly, I don't seem to find anthing that inspires me to change anything.

    I'm unfortunately not a big sleeper and my life consists of a series of naps unless I'm passed out with my 151 by me but I try to end the night the same way that I try to start it, with something funny to cut out the everything in between.
    Definitely with @DreG on The Family Guy and American Dad tip, Bob's Burgers is also on that menu week nights.
