It looks nice and all but do the really need a new stadium. Couldn't they just renovate there old one. The tore down an historic black church just for this. I don't know.
@mojoreece they could have renovated the stadium. But with the hopes of this stadium, the main goal is to keep the Falcons in ATL and the secondary goal is Superbowl. One of the major concerns were the communities around it. While the Castleburry area is boom and Mechanicsville are starting to become desired places of residency, the reality of AUC and MLK that runs perpendicular to the stadium are in ruins. Now you can't blame AUC for not doing better with their money and making their school more desirable from all the money they have taken from the black community over the years. But the community development in that area has been less than favorable since I moved to ATL. Gentrification is working its course in that area.
Yeah I agree. If not mistaken, I believe that Morris Brown College was able to indirectly favor from this deal as well. Didn't it help them come out of debt somehow? Maybe a least one good thing came from it.
Quote: It was announced in 2010 that the Georgia World Congress Center Authority, the stadium's operator, is pursuing a new stadium with a retractable roof, to the south of the Georgia Dome. Upon completion of Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2017, the Georgia Dome will be demolished to make way for parking to the new stadium. What they haven't mentioned that I learned in a regional planning meeting was they are talking about a new hotel down there as well.
