Every year, GLAAD (the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) publishes an analysis of the current state of LGBTQ representation in Hollywood. This year’s analysis took Marvel and Warner Bros. to task for some of their most recent blockbusters.

Despite the fact that Wonder Woman, Black Panther, and Thor: Ragnarok all featured characters that are canonically queer in the comic books, none of the films made mention of the fact. In the latter two films’ case, scenes that explicitly acknowledged that Okoye and Valkyrie are both queer women were considered before ultimately being left on the cutting room floor.

GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis explained that while this problem isn’t at all new, it’s particularly disappointing given how progressive these specific films were in other regards:

“With wildly successful films like Wonder Woman and Black Panther proving that audiences want to see diverse stories that haven’t been told before, there is simply no reason for major studios to have such low scores on the Studio Responsibility Index.

At a time when the entertainment industry is holding much needed discussions about inclusion, now is the time to ensure the industry takes meaningful action and incorporates LGBTQ stories and creators as among priorities areas for growing diversity.”

GLAAD’s Studio Responsibility Index takes into account a number of factors, like a character’s presence on screen, whether their queerness is explicitly mentioned, and how integral to a movie’s plot LGBTQ characters are.

One of the more persistent issues with queer representation that the report makes a point of calling out is that studios will often downplay the fact that a character is gay or trans. The big issue here is that the only way audiences could ever know that they’re queer is by either being familiar with the source material, or by keeping up with interviews from a film’s writers or directors:

Far too often LGBTQ characters and stories are relegated to subtext, and it is left up to the audience to interpret or read into a character as being LGBTQ. Audiences may not realize they are seeing an LGBTQ character unless they have outside knowledge of a real figure, have consumed source material for an adaptation, or have read external press confirmations. This is not enough.

Our stories deserve to be seen on screen just as much as everyone else’s, not hidden away or left to guess work, but boldly and fully shown.

GLAAD found that all seven major Hollywood studios ended up doing a generally worse job in 2017 compared to 2016 when it came to getting LGBTQ folks on screen. Out of the 109 movies that the studios put out last year, only 12.8 percent included queer people, with the bulk of those characters being cisgender men and there being no transgender characters at all.

So yeah, the current state of queer representation in Hollywood isn’t great. But with films like Deadpool 2, here’s hoping that next year we’ll be able to look back and see that progress, though gradual, is in fact happening.

Wonder Woman clearly comes from the Greek island of Lesbos which is where the term lesbian comes from IIRC. We all know why there were no non-heterosexual characters shown in Black Panther. The Afrocentric/Pan-Africanist types would foaming at the mouth with rage about how the white man is trying to brainwash blacks into becoming homosexuals in order to keep black people from reproducing. Of course African countries with strict anti-gay laws would ban the movie altogether sorta like what happened with the Lesbian themed movie Rafiki was in Kenya even though the film was made in Kenya and is about people in that country. Movie studios don't want to mess with a big cash cow like big budget superhero flix by courting controversy. They can't afford to scare away Mr. and Mrs. white bread & mayonnaise middle America. Deadpool is an edgier less well known character that Marvel Studios can afford to take risks with which is why they're not leaving out the fact that he goes both ways.

@Cyrus-Brooks Definitely agree, the corporate types want the air and benefits of diversity without actually embacing it. Wonder Woman's creator, a psychiatrist, wasn't shy about the bondage implications of her lasdo, etc. He meant for her to represent certain gender and sexual things on a subtle level. Hell, he was 70 years ahead of white feminists in addressing the "fat shaming" issue with women (WW's plump 1940s sidekick, Etta Candy, who was athletic and not ashamed of her weight, ability to kick ass, or her healthy libido for men lol)
