"The color black has become increasingly important to me. It hurts my heart to watch the television special 'Black in White America,' when the Black girl picked the white doll over the Black. That's why I decided the color scheme for Rhythm Nation - the costumes, the cover art, the overall feeling - would be positively, uncompromisingly Black." - Janet Jackson

The song "Rhythm Nation"was one of the first socially conscious songs that I payed attention to as a kid. She did it in a way that young adults would be able to grasp without being preachy. The video was fly. I tried to memorize the song and dance routine when it came on.

It hurts my heart when I see the little black girls choose the white dolls. It really does. Little tiny tots...and they already have been brainwashed into picking the white doll over something that represents themselves. It is just very tragic to watch those things and says soooo much about this society and societal conditioning. Show that to the people who talk about 'black privilege'. SMH

*They did these 'doll' studies way back in the 60's and 70's...and the results are still pretty much the same overall!
