Transgender athletes speak out as parents petition to change policy that allows them to compete as girls

Some Connecticut parents are petitioning to change the rules of state high school athletics after two transgender track and field stars began dominating girls' competitions.

Terry Miller and Andraya Yearwood, both 16, are transgender student-athletes who compete on the girls' track and field teams at their high schools, and their state championship glory has triggered a heated debate in their community.

Terry Miller (left) and Andraya Yearwood, two transgender track and field student-athletes, are photographed here.

Terry and Andraya came in first and second place, respectively, in the 100-meter race at the State Open Finals on June 4. Terry also won the top prize for the 200-meter dash.

"I was expecting it," Terry told ABC News' Linsey Davis of the backlash she's faced as a trans athlete. "Every day, I would go home, search up 'track and field high school Terry Miller.'"

Some online comments have been harsh, Terry said. Critics complain that she and Andraya both have an unfair advantage, after having been assigned the male sex at birth. The critics say the male testosterone hormone gives them a leg up in sports.

Andraya told ABC News that she decided "the summer before ninth grade” it would be more appropriate for her to run on the girls' team because she identifies as female.

Both athletes have begun hormone therapy and said for the most part they've been welcomed by family, friends, coaches and administrators with open arms.

Recently, however, two petitions were started in an attempt to change the rules at their local governing body of interscholastic sports, which allows students to participate on a team based on their gender identity or how they identify.

"The girls athletes are at the physical disadvantage compared to the transgender female," said Bianca Stanescu, a parent who started one of the petitions after her daughter lost to Andraya and Terry at a track meet in May.

"They have, naturally, testosterone within their body that has been proven to give a physical advantage in sports," Stanescu added.

Stanescu, who did not know the girls were already taking the female hormones, has garnered a little over one hundred signatures to date. Medical science shows that estrogen therapy changes the body, replacing some lean muscle with fat, though it affects every individual differently.

Both girls said they try not to let the online complaints get to them.

"I'm not affected by it at all," Andraya said. "I just roll my eyes and keep pushing."

Andraya's parents said what is most important is not track and field accolades, but the well-being of their child.

"Track is number 100 on my list of concerns as a father of a transgender daughter," Rahsaan Yearwood told ABC News.

"I'm talking about raising a child for life, and so is it fair that that child is excluded?" he added. "Is it fair that that child doesn't feel like they have a place they belong?”

Ngozi Nnaji, Andraya's mother, added that running on the girls' team "allows her to be who she wants to be."

"And I think that has a little bit more weight ... than just winning a medal," she added.

Rules surrounding transgender student-athletes at the high school level vary from state to state. In seven states, students must either: play on the team that matches their birth certificate; the team for which they have undergone gender reassignment surgery; or the one for which had extended hormone therapy. Medical research can't identify the line where a competitive advantage may or may not exist for trans athletes for either gender.

Despite the petitions circulating in her community, Andraya said her track and field goal is "to qualify for nationals next year in outdoor and in indoor track," adding that she has been avidly training to accomplish her goal.

Andraya said she also hopes to "inspire others," and if she could send a message to other trans youth it would be: "Just follow your heart."

"Don't let other people determine what you do in life," she added.

Terry said that she believes if the roles were reversed, she would welcome a transgender teammate even if it meant she were losing competitions.

"It would just push me to run faster," she said. "I'd be happy for them, 'cause they get to do what they want. They're happy, so then that should in turn make me happy."

Terry said she also hopes to qualify for nationals, but she also hopes to be a voice for others who are different.

"I want to speak for people," she said, "that aren't looked at normal, or are basically outed, or put in a different group because of their differences."

Considering societal trends, maybe athletic competitions might go coed and base competitive events on an **individual’s** height, weight, BMI vs sex? I dunno.

It’s important to remember human variation within/without “race”, sex, family origin, exists even before you get to “gender” etc. For example, the ridiculous notion that everyone in a “race” is the same (I’m got a couple of inches height on Obama but can’t hoop worth shit). Think about the general competitive superiority of certain caucasoid and negroid groups to other black and white groups, such as track events (East African blacks, Nordic whites) vs caucasians and blacks that are better at anaerobic and strength events (football, rugby) such as West Africans and Teutonic or Eastern European whites.

You can separate by just biological sex, but even then there will be variation (Selena Williams body type vs a Martina Navratilova), so it seems illogical to me to totally exclude trans athletes on the assumed idea that “they are really a man or woman”.

But in the end I see emotional society backlash towards trans athletes before a rational, behavioral and biological standard is established for such athletic events.

I hear all of that, but at the end of the day, the slowest man in the 100m final at last years world championships was still faster than the female who won gold in the women's 100m final.

I personally think this is one of those areas where you need to take the kid gloves off. Athletic competitions are separated by gender for obvious reasons. If you competed in the boys meet last month, you don't get to now compete w the women and become the state champion a few weeks later.

    Meh.

I don't think it makes them the best but it does give them some advantage to a degree. If they were losing no one would care.

I don't have a problem with it. I'm guessing they are too young to have the full reassignment surgery but they can get on estrogen? If so then that still does not seem like a they'd be at that much of an advantage. Steroids don't make you muscular on their own and neither will T shots in your buttocks.

It's not fair at all. They should be fighting to play with the men. I think this takes it a little too far

    ...what @SB3 said.

Plus it would make more of a statement while during their tranformation, they continue competing with other males.

As I say this, keep in mind I would be okay with it if they were intersexed.

@SB3 My frame of referenced is nuanced, but in the end I tend to look at things from a legalistic / utilitarian viewpoint before I delve into social, political, etc.

To very simply illustrate what I mean, consider the Melissa McCarthy show “ Mike and Molly.” A lot of people might look at her tv husband and say “There’s no way big boy would be allowed to be a cop.” Not necessarily true. The courts long ago established that the essential duty of a cop is to be able to make a forceable arrest. So, if you’re black, white, able-bodied, wheelchaired, male, female...if you can make a forceable arrest, you can be a cop. Likewise with today’s military. If you can meet these conditions to a Ranger, SEAL, Recon Marine, male or female...give it a try if accepted for training.

I guess that’s how I approach this. Are we going to have a separate trans category. Forget about biology, anthropology... what will be the legal challenges? How do medically, scientifically judge what is ***sufficuently*** “male” or “female”?

Sorry, I know, tldr, but unlike most Americans, including our current idiot in chief or most religious people, I like to take time and consider shit from multiple angles before i get to final “yea” or “nay.”

But like I said it’s all theoretical anyway from a de facto standpoint. Athletics didn’t accept Derrick Gordon, Orlando Cruz, or the other recent applicants for first big lgbt athletic star, so trans will be a bridge too far for years.

Its not that theyre too young for surgery, its that they just started transitioning. They competed w the boys a month before the state championships. No one would bat an eye if they lost because they'd be the two boys who sucked so badly at track, that they cant even beat the girls. However, if you're a dude who can make the track team at a school that makes it to states, then the odds are very slim that the average girl on the girls team can beat you.

I get that theyd probably be just as big a spectacle if they were competing against the guys, in a different way...sooo, to me that means sit out and do a year of hormone therapy like the ncaa rules require, and then we'll talk. Im still not here for it tho...

This Caster Semenya. She's been undefeated in the 800m for the last 2 Olympic cycles. There was a huge debate about her dominating against the other women in the field based on an obvious 'difference' in her hormones from the other girls.

Point is, if she, born a female, has been the subject of a years long issue abt hormonal advantage in athletics, then I just don't see it for these 2 month old trans kids.

I dunno...most gay men are perceived to be non-athletic and "girlie" when it comes to sports, so they (the straights) shouldn't really have a problem with this given their own biases.

Her case is very interesting being she was born intersex (i believe) and her parents choice to raise her as a girl. It is something of a quandary. With all the progress with lgbti movement; the question hasn't really been answered when it comes the "i's" and "t's" when it in involves sport leagues and athletic competition fairness ?

I think the new IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federation) ruling thats coming this fall case will established precedent for other sport leagues to follow when dealing with intersex and trans people.

Keisha cares when she's no longer ranked 1st in the entire state.

Also, this IS track. Half of the boys on the team are gay. It's the 'drama club' of hs sports...ijs

    Lmao. I'm so dead bro.

Personally, I would allow trans women to compete but you would have to have been on your hormones for at least a year. At the end of the day they should be allowed to compete. They won't race with the boys so the only option is with the girls. It may be a little unfair to those cisgendered girls. But guess what, life is unfair.
