Russian Protests.

Putin is what he is-what can you expect from a guy who is from the KGB back in the day?-he is a thug and a despot and follows in the long 600 year history of Russians being ruled by despots.

Russians are a strange breed. They have only known either order or chaos for century after century. They cannot handle democracy or freedom yet- it is not in their national DNA and they have never had any successful run of it ever. They tend to think in binary terms of extremes and associate authoritarianism with order and chaos with freedom. and do not trust their own nature. They see that unlike many other places, Russian society can tolerate only a limited amount of 'freedom' before it veers wildly off course into chaos, and they will choose despotic order over free chaos every time eventually.

Also they are a very homogenous people who have always looked inward and have a natural paranoia born of centuries of being a 'plains people' constantly under attack from the West, East, South, even the North. They do not take kindly to 'standing out from the crowd' and do not really as a society in general have much of a 'tolerance chip' for people who are markedly different.

*also watch and see who replaces Putin-I bet it is a thick-haired guy.
