So Jack'd is forcing guys to almost be civil and users are pissed.

    It's complicated
I've never been a big user of online dating apps. I've dibbled and dabbled a bit but I'm no expert for sure. Typically, my experience has been nothing short of aggravating and disappointing. I like good conversation but that's hard to find online in any capacity but online dating apps are the pits. I've always wondered what would happen if sites like Jack'd, A4A and Grindr, modified or deleted some of the features that I thought were detrimental to gay men getting to know each other or at the very least, make us behave in a more civilized manner. Welp, it looks like Jack'd has done exactly that and the gays are pissed.

    Blocked.jpg

One of the worst features of online dating apps is that dreaded BLOCK BUTTON. These apps have turned blocking people into a nasty sport. Jack'd hasn't removed the feature completely but users are required to pay for an upgrade in order to be able to block people and this, apparently, is an affront to people's rights and sensibilities. Personally, I think it's abused by the insecure and scammers. Read some of the comments I picked out from an online review board.

"Block feature doesn’t work...I’d clearly block users for various reasons (clear up people closest near me..etc) but once I log back on..within hours or next day, I’d see the same user that was previously blocked."

"Apparently I had already reached the block level before your upgrade and now I can’t block anyone. It’s super aggravating. I travel A LOT. So yes I have people blocked everywhere. Guess I’ll have to make a new profile in every city."

"The new version does not give you the option to block someone unless you pay for a monthly subscription. So if you have a stalker the only thing you can do is “hide” them but per Jackd, the person can still see and communicate with you...sounds like a safety concern to me!"

"Why can’t i block people.... this need to be fixed ASAP.... i am subject to some disrespect by people who i am not into."

Now, how many people can honestly say they're being "harassed" to the extent of some of these dudes? Most elude to "guys not being able to take a hint" as harassment. I wonder if they ever try to just say, "hey thanks for the shout but I'm not interested and I wish you well" BEFORE blocking. I can't imagine that people only want the block feature out of fear of being harassed. I can honestly say I've never stalked or harassed anyone online. The second dude is obviously addicted as he had already reached his block level and can no longer block people. This is aggravating to him apparently. LOL I don't have the time, yet I've been blocked before. My ego is still intact. Seems to me like dudes just like the power of being able to dismiss people with the click of a button and now they can't do it and they're freaking out. It's harder to be rude and dismissive to people knowing they can still see your profile and message you. Perhaps this will force dudes to start treating people as they would in person.

    headless.jpg

Faceless profiles have always been a hot-button issue on any dating app. Some people don't like their face posted on apps like Jack'd. I'll raise my hand and join that club. Who wants their picture posted besides a booty hole or penis picture? I am respectful enough that I don't message profiles that clearly state no pic no reply. Apparently, some guys don't have the same level of respect which leads me to the second reason for the Jack'd outrage. In order to Match, a la Tinder, you have to have a face picture now. Well, take a look at how the gays feel about that.

"The app bulks pics I sent previously but only allows the recent 2 without pro and then I can’t delete the previously sent from recent so it just sits there . Stupid . I can’t match without a clear face picture . Stupid . I can’t block/hide anyone without pro that’s the stupidest of it all"

"This app won't let you post a topless torsal shot if you are fit. A fit body pic is considered too sexy and therefore, a violation. Since I don't post face pics and they consider most of my body pics too sexual, this app is not for me."

Ignoring the hubris of the second dude to automatically qualify his topless torso shot as fit and "too sexy", I empathize with dudes like this who can't understand that there are some people out there who would like a platform where they're not being peppered with messages and matches from blank profiles. We have grown accustomed to interacting with each other based off torso pictures and no one see's a problem with that. What if the solution was for someone to create an app where pictures weren't allowed at all? How many of these pictureless profile dudes would use it? I'm sure it wouldn't be many.

    read.jpg read.jpg

What about this whole read receipt issue? I've noticed read alerts on some apps. It's even on the iOS platform. Most of us can turn it off on our Iphones if we don't want friends/family/old flames to know that we've read their message or when we read it. There's nothing more infuriating than being left on read. LOL So why do guys want to be able to know when they've been left on read? It's like waving that red cape in front of a bull. I bet that's why the vitriol begins. Apparently, Jack'd no longer let's you know that a person read your message at all and the gays have their pitchforks at the gate.

"The new look is good but 1) the read receipts is gone bring it back 2) to unlock pics is said I had to upgrade (foolishness and y’all need to quit it) 3) and to favorite someone it says I have to upgrade too! That is just absolutely ridiculous! 4) you can’t see how long ago a person was online..."

"The match function is now ruined. Forcing people to have a public face pic just to use it is awful. A lot of people have justifiable reason for not posting one publicly. Also hard to tell how long ago someone was online or if your message was read."

So it's important for a person to know if their message has been read? Why? If it's been read and they elected not to message you back, do you become that stalker that people want to block. And do people even know that they are both stalkers and the persons asking to be protected from stalkers?

The way I see it, gay men want to be able to message anyone we want even if the other person's profile clearly spells out what they're looking for. We also want to be able to dismiss each other with
the click of a block button instead of communicating lack of interest through words. We also want to be able to cruise incognito but don't want those visible to have an issue with that. If you think about it, these changes, really aren't that bad. It seems they would force men to...you know....actually communicate or at least be civil. So what you cussed someone out and, oops, now you can't block them so they still see your profile. Grow the fuck up and stop trying to throw stones and hide. Jack'd is forcing you to deal with these people. LOL

Of course there are a million threats to delete the app and go to another app but I doubt there will be a mass exodus. Gay men are stuck in this vicious cycle of apps and all the drama that goes along with them.

What are your thoughts? Are these changes good or bad?

Isn't Jack'd more in tune with POC than with whites? Maybe it depends on the area but when I used Grindr, I got nothing but white guys.

I really don't care tbh about Jack'd changes. I have blocked people before, but they have always been highly annoying or downright rude.

As far as face is concerned, I do like to look at guys faces and bodies. I don't mind not being able to see your face on the front page but you better have some pics up there.

I don't even talk to profiles that don't have a picture tbh. If I do its rather spotty.

My images have always been deleted in the past, from both Grindr and Jack'd...even when I have it from chin to just above the waist, I have been flagged for nudity. Being slim and semi-fit screams fawk me down. I just have that shape that is gonna get me reported or flagged. I've been deleted the two.

Tinder was stupid to me and so are the others. I just said Is be better off in a public setting minding my business and if some hot assed man comes in my view so be it.

Jack'd has 2 rating on the App store...lol

Wait, where did the quotes come from? Was this an article posted on another site?

I haven't used Jack'd in a long while and the reason for that is it seems to be more of a hookup app than a dating app. And considering how many married, down low and attached men use these apps to creep, imposing strict rules about face pics and shirtless photos seems counterproductive.

If the rationale is they are trying to rebrand themselves as more of a safe-for-work Tinder type dating app, then they should just say that and let the hoes move on to other apps.

Admittedly, I have put face pics on Tinder but not Jack'd or Grindr. Those apps are just sleazy in comparison. And the quality of respondents I received on the latter two sites are different as well. Usually I got the gross looking tattooed guys who look like Taggaz rejects or I got the out of shape white guys who like BBC....only time I saw somewhat interesting guys on Jack'd, they end up being out-of-towners who want me to come to their hotel and party-n-play. So I just stopped even going there.

I know its easy to say, just don't use Jack'd instead of complaining about it. But I know there are few options for Black gay men, especially if you are discreet and don't want to meet guys in public.

Nope. I wrote it all myself. No plagiarism here. LOL

The quotes were pulled from review boards. I attempted to attribute the site but parts of the article kept getting deleted each time I made changes or attempted to add pictures so after a couple of hours, I just forgot about it.

And you made some good points. Even though Jack'd and Grindr are considered hookup sites, it's rare to find guys who love the sites, or men on the sites, as it stands now. Most dudes appear to be just as frustrated with the current usefulness of these apps and I would say very few men have great experiences on there. Even as a hookup site, there are far too many Olympic hoops one has to jump through in order to even meet someone in person to do whatever it is you want to do.

My main point is the changes don't prevent people from hooking up. If anything, I think it prevents the flakiness and online bullying that's prevalent on any dating/hookup site and it's obvious that gay men aren't trying to stop being flaky.

To be fair, I totally understand the changes. Sounds like a lot of this is related to revenue. They look at the features most used by the users and say, "if you want to keep using these features, please pay for a subscription." Jack'd is a business, not a charity bringing gays together. For Cypher Avenue, we've clearly never considered making in part of the site subscription based, even in the site's heyday. Mainly because the operation costs (server and software) has been able to be covered by donations and money from advertising. We've never earned a salary from working on the site, but then again we're not a company with several employees and an office headquarters, which Jack'd is:

"Jack'd is operated by Online Buddies, Inc., that facilitates male same-sex introductions. It is owned by its founders, Jonathan Crutchley and Larry Basile. They are headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. As of June 2016, Hector Camacho serves as the chief executive officer of Online Buddies."

Having said that, I agree that they run the risk of scaring away the bulk of their clientele and users. But one can make the case that if the app is losing them money from poor ad sales and the power users don't want to pay for subscriptions, these recent changes may be their last attempt to right the ship before deciding to shut it down altogether.

Admittedly, I pay a monthly subscription for Tinder. Like my gym membership, I rarely use it but still feel comfort in having the option to use it whenever I want to...and the premium features feel somewhat worth it. AND I feel like the quality of men on the app are better, especially when I have the option to set my location to anywhere in the world and swipe through all types of eligible bachelors without seeing crazy erect peen pics and glazed anal donut holes.

Personally, I would never give money to Jack'd, not just because the app is sleazy, but mainly because through their own incompetence users' "private" photos were exposed for over a year: Gay dating app Jack’d settles complaint over exposing private photos

Now that I think about it, the $240,000 settlement they had to pay may be the reason they are charging for so many basic features now. Gotta recoup their losses.

Yeah, even the complainers are stating it's a way for Jack'd to make more money as if that's a new idea for any business. They also complain about the pop-up ads which help offset the cost of running a site like that. So I'm assuming most users want an app that gives them the moon without charging them a penny for subscriptions or inconveniencing them with pop up ads that pays the bills. SMH

And I had no idea the subscription to Tinder was worth it. Let me grab my phone and check it out. LOL

Your mileage may vary, of course. To some, the free version is enough...especially if you're under 40 with IG thirst trap worthy pics.

Tinder does have highest quality guys but the problem i have with them is they don't give you enough free features to make the app useable, make users happy and willing to go premium. They prevent you from seeing anymore nearby people after about a week and tells me," 60+ people like you, upgrade to tinder gold to see them." I haven't matched with anyone new in 2 weeks. Wish i had a limit of 5 people a day at least. Grindr has low quality guys but I can see a lot of guys without premium, so i guess it's quality over quantity, i gotta pay for the quality.

This is probably what motivated me to go premium with Tinder. And even though many of the matched profiles that were revealed with Tinder Gold were not my type, there is still an ego boost when I see who swiped right on me before I swipe right on them. Kinda like going to a party or bar where you already have a heads up on who's interested in you. Lessens the anxiety of possible rejection somewhat.

And it's worked out well so far, get tons of good matches with quality men who talk more about sex and hooking up. Only problem is many people use these apps as games or time fillers without any intention of actually meeting people in person. I've heard a lot of ppl say that if you don't talk on the phone or meet the person from Tinder within the first week of matching, odds are against that you ever will. Probably the opposite on Jack'd and Grindr since those are hookup apps.

So what you're saying is you're paying for an ego boost from Tinder Gold? LOL

And getting tons of good matches with quality men who talk more about sex and hooking up is your idea of working out well? I'm confused.

If that's all you took from my comment after writing the entire article above about Jack'd, cool.

What's confusing about that? The majority of gay "dating" apps are about hooking up and not to genuinely get to know a person.

On Tinder I have found a place to find quality gay men in my area (and beyond) that are interested in more than just sex and hooking up.

I don't log on to jackd enough to even know that they enabled a Pay Wall for features.

I knew the interface updated but that makes total sense.

I find the complaints laughable actually. People block so easily before. Now people have to consider how valuable their free block options are before engaging it.

It says bad things about the same gender loving male (gay/bi) community if all dating apps targeting at us are very sex and hookup oriented. Gay apps are plastered with pictures of half naked or bare butt men. They put fields to encourage you to put all sorts of sexual details on your profile like top, bottom, verse, your penis length etc. They provide filters like ethnicity etc filter people out without even looking at them. The result of that is people having the audacity to put "no fats, no blacks, no fems," on their profile. Having ethnic preferences is fine, a lot of people do. They'd just rather not talk to you, and who knows they might like someone of a different ethnicity they thought they wouldn't have if they give them a shot.

To be fair, Tinder was conceived as a dating app and not a hookup app. Unfortunately, i can see it being taken over by the freaks. I tried it and a had a few dudes get angry with me because I wasn't looking for a hookup. There really is no way to put up a firewall to block out all the freak whores that are in our community. They really drown out other types of dudes.

Now that I think back, there used to be an app/site that required you to put a face picture up in order to create a profile. If I remember correctly, you had to take a picture and then snap a picture with your laptop camera and the site verified that they matched. The purpose was to prevent people from putting up fake pictures. I tested it to see if it worked by adding a fake picture and everytime I did the live picture, the site would reject as I obviously looked nothing like the photo. Needless to say, there were far fewer active black men on there. LOL We don't participate unless we are incognito or catfishing. I wish I could remember the name of the site. It probably still exists.

Sad but true. I honestly believe almost all of what "The Gays" now use as hookup sites were originally INTENDED for "real dating" but, like you said...the 'freak whores' are unfortunately the loud majority. This ain't to knock their hustle...to each his own...but it does get exhausting and eventually a n!kka like me that was actually lookin for something serious just ended up like..."fk this, it ain't even worth it, anymore".
