If someone asked you to imagine what merfolk looked like, you’d probably think of Ariel. Or one of the girls out of Mermaids.

Blonde. White. Blue-eyed.

But one merman is swimming against the stereotypes and is fighting for more black people to embrace the mer lifestyle.

Blix is a gay professional mermaid who lives in Atlanta.

‘I eat, sleep and breathe mermaids, merman – the whole life,’ says Blix, who is known as Eric when he’s a ‘two-legger’.



‘My family knew I was a merman for a very long time because I used to wrap my feet up in blankets and shape it into a mermaid form.’

Blix’s godmother, Natasha James, makes his silicone tails and she says that she’s actually lost friends through it.

‘People told me I was crazy,’ she says.

‘When I started making these, I lost a lot of friends who would tell me, “There’s no such thing as black mermaids – why are you doing this?”‘



Blix says he’s even had kids coming up to him saying that their friends have told them they can’t be mermaids because they’re black.

‘And I’m like, “No baby, don’t say that – that should make you want to be one. You can be the first!”.’

Blix tells Metro.co.uk that he became a professional merman about two years ago but has been ‘living the merman life ever since (he) was young’.

But how easy is it to learn to be one?

‘I’ve been swimming since I was a kid and pretending to have a tail was always a thing to do at the pool,’ he explains.

‘Once I got my first tail, the swimming was second nature.’

On his event hire bio, he says that he’s from the planet Euragond, which is inhabited by blue whale sized merfolk.

‘He and his family members are able to change their body sizes to match those of humans on Earth. They came on a mission to entertain Earthlings of all ages.’

So…are there any merpeople here?

‘The mercommunity spreads all the world!’ Blix says.

‘There are merfolk EVERYWHERE!’



Blix says: ‘Being a merman has taught me to just be free, not to care what anyone thinks – be like the ocean, just be free, follow your own current, love your self.’

‘No matter what anybody says, if you want to wear a tail, put on a tail and be a mer.’

And when you see how glorious he looks, its hard not to want to.
