QUESTION : WILL THIS MOVIE TAKE THE PLACE OF THE FAMED MOVIE " PUNKS " OR IS THIS ANOTHER SIDE OF THE GAY LIFE ? ANOTHER GOOD STORY ? WILL THESE GUYS FIND LOVE ? CAN'T WAIT TO FIND OUT IN OCTOBER 21ST. 2016

Looks like a great movie to watch. Never really seen anyone do a movie that dealt with homosexuality from this point a view. Oh and I think I saw Janelle Monae acting in this.

 

If the film is like the trailer, I expect it will be a critical favorite but do so-so box office. That's okay. Every journey starts with a single step. An intelligent, nuanced, complex story about the lives of black men, devoid of hyper- and toxic-masculine or racial stereotypes is much needed.

It is done well and I do want to see it but I don't get much about what the movie could be about from the trailer hahaha

 

Looks like a great movie because it looks hella layered to me.

Seems to be:

• The pain of the main character dealing with self, his background, and who he ultimately is.
• The environment he lives in that encourages violence, ignorance, and hatred
• The family that may not know how to handle him so as a result makes matters worse.

And looks to be done in an intelligent way with finesse and sophistication. Im there...

 

Finally a black gay coming-of-age story.

 

If this is playing in your city, and you don't BUY a ticket and go see it, I don't wanna hear SHYT abt the lack of diversity and variety in blk, gay content from you on here EVER again!!! That's for everyone!

 

The actor playing the kid grown up in this trailer is the Dude from Tyler Perry's series "If Loving You is Wrong." He shows more nuance and acting ability in this trailer than he did in the entire season of Perry's TV show. That surprises me! He's built, so I thought he was just a TP "casting-couch" hire for that show. (I guess I have that wickedly funny "Boondocks"/TP parody episode to blame for that. Lol.) Looks like "Moonlight" is giving Bruh a chance to flex some actual acting muscles. Good for him!

 

Looking forward to seeing this one.

#shade Lol! But unfortunately, regardless of this being an independent film, it will not be in mainstream movie theaters. Patrick Ian Polk tried really hard to get "Blackbird" in theaters, but was unsuccessful. We cant let homosexuality poison the heteronormative.

 

OKAY This looks like it's actually worth paying for.I hope this is a success.

 

That observation is so full of wisdom, I'll try to keep response from tldr:

• There are some influential gay film critics out there (Rex Reed, Armond White) yet none of the more influential ones ever seem to champion LGBT themed films (Reed is too much of a queenie misogynist, White a house nigger troll) to give them a critical push. In return, there are some "white" gay culture sites that always champion black gay film efforts. We need to support on one hand any LGBT resources, regardless of ethnic-orientation, that encourage young black gay filmmakers and call bullshit on sites that perpetuate the "gay jigaboo/minstrel" shit (in the words of an earlier CA post).

• To the degree we can, we need to always make sure we put our money where our mouths are. There's enough black gay men, especially us older ones,who have enough to kick some bank to the up and coming. Sometimes that means buying or dragging ourselves to so-so productions in the hope that new efforts, taken together, skew towards better quality.

• Call out black writers, cultural websites, radio stations, news sources who have their fists up in the air, or hosannas for every piece of "straight," black-themed crap and maudlin shit that Spike Lee, Tyler Perry, BET, or some rapper-turned-actor churns out but can't seem to find an encouraging word or thread for anything that doesn't support our usual black toxic masculine / toxic religious / black victim / cisgender themes.
