What Should "The Boards" Rules Be? You Decide...

At the end of the day, this is you guys' baby, and you guys should matter of factly call the shots. I dont think an extensive list of rules is necessarily gonna help the lurking situation, but I get the point.

I do really like #4 from above. And the answer to #5 is no...

You could make #4 even more strict by locking lurkers out completely of half the threads until they complete the tasks outlined. Some might think that's excessive though.

Now, we were dealing with 5000+members so a lot of things tend not to happen until you get a round of trolls in. But people just posting up threads just to do so, ALL CAPS, harassing people via PMs are things I really hated.

I also think that if possible, figuring out a way to 'warn' people who violate first before outright banning them is key too. Sometimes people forget where they are and do things at one site that's cool but not at another. We had to IP ban a few people who were making multiple accounts after getting banned before.

 

1.) What are some other do's and don'ts you think we should implement or discuss here in the thread?

dos:
* daps( like upvotes and likes) help bring the best discussions and opinions on the top. That helps keep things interesting
* Native and relevant ads if possible( like the way facebook does). They are much less intrusive and feel like recommendations instead of pushing to buy things.
* community events like conventions, meetups, retreats just to foster deeper relationships between members

don'ts:
* pop-up ads...ugh!
*feature overload. Keep some core features that the community will get used to before rolling out new ones. Otherwise, it can get overwhelming

2.) Are there rules (or lack of rules) you've seen on other gay and non-gay sites that you'd like to mention?

In my personal experience, these are forum behaviors that I have seen destroy online communities:
* personal attacks aka extreme and obsessive "shade". Agree/disagree with opinions, not people
*racism
* hostility towards newbies.
* and other things. I am sure you've already researched some.

3.) Are there certain types of topics the staff and moderators should remove when posted?

Any topics that feel like personal attacks toward squad members should be removed as soon as possible to prevent them spiraling out of control.

Currently, non-registered and New Squad Members can't view profiles, send messages, access downloads, see photo attachments or create new threads until they have uploaded an avatar and have at least 10 approved (substantive) replies on existing threads (done to dissuade lurking). Should that number be increased? Decreased?

I think it should be decreased for some tasks. 10 replies sounds too high of a number. You can "gamify" it, so that it sounds like fun. So for instance, at
1 reply and avatar: view profiles, send messages
5 replies: access downloads, see photo attachments
10 replies: create new threads

I've been a member for a little over a month and I am impressed with the quality of the discussions, much better than on many other sites I've been on. And until today's post I had not really given any thought to whether there are rules or not, so I guess that says something about the folks who follow and join in the discussion.
Unless things change, unless the tone changes, I am comfortable with the current state of affairs. I do think it is important to encourage lurkers to join the discussion. But overall the status quo is okay.

 

Nah, I just meant that w #4 all ready in place (btw, i think @Infinite_loop makes a great case now that i think about it) I think anyone who comes to the site will quickly get a dose of reality as far as what this 'gay' site is about..and not about. Im assuming u get alerts anytime something is posted, so its fine for u to step in and shut down anything ur not rocking with.

I think the amount of rules you guys are setting are fair and appropriate for this kind of forum, people should have some kind of decency even if this is the internet...

Obviously any kind of post that could be potentially offensive to members here or even guests visiting. No Racists, Hate-Mongers, or Sociopaths please!
