My grandparents were surprisingly lax I remember being like 6 or 7 and watching the People Under The Stairs and Arachnophobia. So I used to watch whatever I wanted(I remember my best friend wasn't allowed to watch the Simpsons)....UNTIL I copied what I heard on I think on either Golden Girls or In Living Color and called this girl at school an expletive. So I was banned from In Living Color.

I was raised by wolves in the hood so nothing was off limits.

It seems my parents were pretty lenient. For me, there were no limits on media just limits on real life behaviors and actions. So, I watched pretty much everything I wanted on HBO since grammar school, read what I wanted, etc. Before we got cable, they wouldn't let me go to R rated movies with my cousins, however. My folk probably allowed freedom at home because I was already pretty straight in real life without prompting, i.e. I've never smoked weed to this day, didn't start drinking until I was 20, and graduated a virgin and didn't knock up any girls in high school. That's why I take such idiosyncratic positions in issues on the boards. I've always read and consumed media with almost no boundaries placed on what I've watched since first grade. I did get my ass beat in 3rd grade when my mother found a drawing in one of my pants, of my reading teacher with "MOTHER F-----R" written in big letters. Ironically, I learned that from the hoodrat kid living next door not TV.

I wasn't allowed to go to the movies. My parents thought all manner of evil went on there. Then I got bold and went after telling them I was going with some friends in...what was it...grade 9? Somewhere there anyways. Turns out it wasn't really my scene, and I'm a bit of a heckler. Lol.

I was absolutely forbidden from watching The Simpsons. So I watched it anyways, timing it perfectly- I'd watch reruns right before they got home from work. Living wild, I tell ya.

This one is going to be uniquely African...when I was growing up VHS tapes were the most affordable form of entertainment. There was no cable and the only thing on TV was government propaganda. So your only option was rented or borrowed cassette tapes. We got copies of movies and TV shows from the US. There was one TV in my home so everyone knew what you were watching. Even so my siblings would sometimes bring R rated movies. They usually watched them when my parents were away. Unbeknownst I would watch too. This is how I watched my first xxx movie too. Because I was watching from outside I could hear my parents arriving and I would wonder back to my room. My siblings weren't always as lucky. Lol

My folks pretty much let me watch whatever I wanted, which usually consisted of Nickelodeon and BET. I'm sure they would have had a problem if they would have known I was sneaking downstairs in the middle of the night to watch all them soft porn movies on Cinemax tho.

But the adults in my life were pretty liberal with regard to my viewing habits in general, including R rated movies. My mom took me to see Purple Rain. My dad's ex girlfriend took me to see School Daze.

I STAYED on punishment {no TV/ no outside} as a preteen/teen so media outside of the radio was a rarity for me, but in my younger young days I was forbidden from watching/ listening to Eddie Murphy's Raw and Delirious, and for some odd reason I wasn't allowed to watch School Daze or Mississippi Burning...but I watched all the horror movies in the world. Go figure. LOL

My parents pretty much let me watch anything. Even "R" rated movies. But by virtue of being a kid, I just naturally gravitated towards things that were more "age appropriate." The only thing they wouldn't let me watch was nudity even if it was fairly tame. They would tell me to temporarily leave the room and then I'd immediately come back after it. Violence? People blowing each other's heads off? Pssh, fine. Sex? No, you're too young.
