Making the news cycle is a video of a man who says he was beaten because he was gay. Naturally folks are saying this should be prosecuted as a hate crime. Check out the video below.
This fight took place during the Detroit Motor City Pride festival from this past weekend. The video shows Christin Howard attempting to fight off a group of little bastards who look like they weigh 100lb as they punch tackle and kick him. Howard says the attack was unprovoked and that he was getting a picture taken with a friend when the young men started circling, commenting on his long hair, calling him homophobic slurs and threatening violence. You can view Howard’s version of events here.
Honestly, all these dudes look gay. I couldn’t tell who was gay and who wasn’t. I mean check out the dude in the blue and white tank top with the pink pocket…come on, that shit is gay as hell (no homo). I have to be real and tell the truth; I have seen gay dudes in public arguing or fighting each other while hurling homophobic slurs like bitch, fag, queen and would throw in an “N-Word” or two just for good measure.
Okay…hold your breath. What I’m about to say will completely shock some Cypher Avenue readers. What you are witnessing in the video is insecure faux hyper-masculine homosexual/bisexual boys who are diverting their insecurities towards a more open and flamboyant gay man. If you all are not aware, gay dudes can be bullies too. Sexuality does not exempt one from being a nasty, rude, crude jerk or asshole. To the young men in the video, know if you can’t fight one-on-one, you’sa pussy. If you are going to taunt a queen or transgender, don’t be afraid to get you ass whipped by one. Second, the world has now seen your faces and regardless if you are prosecuted for a hate crime or not, you are now in the system because of your violent stupid choices.
Nonetheless I ask; is gay dudes beating up one another a hate crime now? Feel free to share your thoughts

I think the investigation that I am sure is underway in this senseless violence will determine if this was indeed a hate crime. I will say that regardless of the orientation of the fighting parties hate crimes are determined in the animus of the attacker. So even if the attackers are gay or whatever if they attacked him because he was gay or appeared to be gay, that is and should be considered a hate crime. I will agree with your assessment though these boys were probably acting out of their own insecurities when they decided to attack this guy. Its quite sad. That is what fear does to people.
Yeah I thought the same thing. I find it odd that a group of heterosexual men would be hanging around a pride festival anyway. But then I saw the tank top dude and I got the “vibe”. Also the alledgly homophobic guy taking off his shirt (at a pride event no less
Did you know that someone has setup a fund for Christin Howard? One person donated $1,000! Really?!
Well keep in mind dude is a hair stylist and during the fight, they broke his finger so he can’t work and make his paper.
“is gay dudes beating up one another a hate crime now?”
Why not? A hate crime is an act of violence motivated primarily b/c the person is identified as belonging to a specific social group. With all the categories and subcategories of sexual and social identity that exist nowadays, there are plenty of ways (even within a community) to single people out for bias and hatred ;and it takes a lot of hate to attack someone for no good reason.
Completely agree. There’s enough division within the gay community that us perpetrating hate crimes against our own is unfortunately not surprising.
Ummm based off this line of logic, that means a group of dark skinned black dudes could beat up a light skinned black dude because he lighter skinned and it be considered a hate crime? I’m not here for such extended definitions. This was an ugly situation, but I cannot escape the feeling this was a fight/beat down with both combatants being gay/bisexual.
This brings up an interesting subculture spin.
I don’t think the law considers the sexuality of the offender in these situations. It could turn into a “Masculine/passable” versus effeminate thing since, we have to remember, it’s the more flamboyant gays who got ‘LBGTQXYZI’ added to many hate crime laws that were already on the books anyway. So since the masculine/invisible gays don’t really read as stereotypically gay, it’s possible that they could be charged with a hate crime.
The law is full of loopholes until things like this happen but I doubt it would matter much unless they mentioned to the lawyer that they too were in fact gay and therefore couldn’t be charged with a a hate crime.
However, that would require them to admit they were gay. lol
Effemiphobia is usually considered under the larger branch of homophobia in interpreting hate crime laws, so this definitely should constitute a hate crime. The sexuality of the aggressors has nothing to do with it, effemiphobia is a big issue in the gay community and has been for some time. And as you mentioned, sexuality is not a get out of jail free card for being a violent asshole.
Gay men can be nasty, rude, crude, jerks, and assholes? Ya don’t say…
Why is there is a question mark. Of course it was a hate crime. There was no other reason for the “guys” to jump on him. If u listen to what they are saying you can hear them saying you gay. From the looks of it the only way they could beat him was if they had jumped him, he was holding his own.
I’ve heard homophobes and gay bashers are acting out because of their own issues. So if they attacked him for being gay,I think I’d be inclined to say yes, charge it as a hate crime.
