Not 24 hours after I accepted the fact that Hip Hop hates me, it reminded me why I fell in love with it in the first place.
Removed from the upcoming album “Hall of Fame” for clearance reasons, Big Sean’s new 7-minute track “Control” featuring Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica was unleashed on Funkmaster Flex’s show yesterday and took over the Internet. The stand out verse did not come from Big Sean, however. It was Kendrick who stole the show murdering not only his track-mates but also just about every other rapper in the game right now.
But wait, there’s more: The Compton rapper also proclaimed himself to be the New King of New York.
“I’m Makaveli’s offspring // I’m the king of New York // King of the coasts // One hand, I juggle them both.”
My dudes.
Seriously.
Stop what you are doing and listen to this verse right now.
Kendrick comes in around the 2:55 mark:
“I heard barber shops be in great debates all the time //Who’s the best MC? Kendrick, Jigga and Nas? // Eminem, Andre 3000, the rest of y’all // New ni**as, just new ni**as, don’t get involved // And I ain’t rockin no more designer shit // White T’s and Nike Cortes, this is red Corvettes anonymous // I’m usually homeboys with the same ni**as I’m rhymin with // But this is hip hop and them ni**as should know what time it is // And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big KRIT, Wale // Pusha T, Meek Mill, ASAP Rocky, Drake //Big Sean, Jay Electron’, Tyler, Mac Miller // I got love for you all but I’m trying to murder you ni**as // Trying to make sure your core fans never heard of you ni**as // They don’t wanna hear not one more noun or verb from you ni**as // What is competition? I’m trying to raise the bar high // Who tryin’ to jump and get it? ”
Um, Yeah…
Kendrick Lamar is the truth.
Big Sean fans rejoice though. His sophomore album drops on August 27th, where you’ll get way more than 3 minutes of him.

He sounded like he couldve meant murder seriously
I do like JCole and Asap, but Lamar just showed me a display of raw talent i didnt hear on the entirety of both their albums
No Words!
Ok I took time away from working hard to read this article and listen to this track. The verse by K Lamar is tight, but as usual i hear more curse words than true intellect. I can understand his choice of language, yet I long for the days when MC’s expressed their lyrical niceness with imaginative phrases and sentences. When curse words are used excessively they take away from the true intent of the verse. That’s just my opinion. Besides all that, I look for true lyricists to inspire and motivate youth with lyrics to uplift and change mindsets. Not demean and ridicule for whatever reason. Instead of HipHop why not change the name to HipHope. If anyone is feeling me then holla atcha boy. Good or Bad.
Peace and Blessings
Yeah there’s something for everyone. Here you go:

I go in and out of lil phases when in listen to rap.
I realize this is sorta a freestyle type track, but it has always been soo difficult for me to get into Big Sean’s flow. When he raps its like the equivalent of a singer who drops a note in a song. Cant quite put my finger on but his flow just sucks to me.
As for Kendrick Lamar he is definetley trying to make some noise cuz that verse went hard. For a minute it kinda reminded me of Nas when he did ” the ether” with how he just snapped and decide to just goin on his peers. I thnk i can definetly get into dude.
Dude, I didn’t even bother to listen to Big Sean’s verse, lol…Something about him is annoying to me.
@nick so you couldn’t get into big Sean’s Guap ? …..Yeah so social media is going crazy over k Lamar’s verse… I don’t get all the hype though because hip hop is supposed to be that way…. It’s all ways been about feuds, and going for the jugular….
Guess folks shocked that a rapper has decided not to rap about skinny leg jeans, kilts, Gucci, murses included, strippers and making it rain. Be cool to see if he gets some of these new dudes to step their game up now.
K. Dot did that! I mean he is really doing his thing.
From wikipedia: “The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 242,000 copies in its first week – earning the highest first-week hip hop album sales of 2012 from a male artist, along with the best-selling debut from a male artist of the year.”
He’s just that good! He sold more albums in the first week than many of those guys in recent years, if not all of them, which speaks volumes. At the time he sold 242K in the first-week, he had less followers on Twitter than most of those dudes and sold more. Goes to show you that Twitter followers don’t equal sales. Period. Talent speaks for itself.
I had never heard of this guy until today. #shrugg
I was one of those ppl who were confused by how kendrick lamar just happened, overnight. Outta nowhere everyone was calling him a big deal to look out for. Next thing u kno, he’s winning every award from BETs to Grammys to Telemundos. I say all of that to say that the last person who was on the fence should at least get it now…
I heard this yesterday. Had no clue what it was about until I saw my twitter feed blowing up about it. Man when I tell you that Kendrick assaulted that verse….man! I can’t think of the last time I heard anything like that, that gave me chills, although, to be fair, the last time I probably heard it was from Jay or Nas….good stuff!
Seems like Hip Hop is starting to respond to the lyrical gauntlet that Kendrick threw down in “Control.” Check out the response from–of all people–“Mr. Hip Hop Pop” himself, The B.o.B.

The verse is OK. But, frankly–I’m really feeling the guitar solo like a Mutha F*cka!
“TD”
I give him points for going after radios most played rappers, for saying he’s not being materialistic but as far as his flow he sounds the same as every other rapper out there, he’s a marketing genius because he has people talking about him but he’s not really saying anything. Calling himself the king New York “NOT”, maybe the Earl of Penn Station….
So I finally had a chance to settle down and listen to this shyt, and now I see why I placed it on my list of things with little importance. He uses the term “murder” metaphorically, and “n*gga” as if the dumb fucks who listens to this garbage can separate the meaning.
I don’t mean to berate those who may enjoy these types of lyrics, but for me, it just doesn’t fit my lifestyle, nor does it finds a home within my moral compass. JMO
Not really a Joe Budden fan. But this verse right here? This is the first response to Kendrick’s take-down on “Control” that actually brings some lyrical FIYA! Check it out:

Your thoughts, Nick???

Man its cool…I’m mainly waiting for one of the rappers actually mentioned in the verse to respond, lol.
Yeah, I know what you mean. Them dudes that KL called out have been strangely silent–hidin’ out like little B*tches!
Not responding to being called out on a rap verse? These “new jacks” could use some of that “ol’ skool” arrogance–Jay-Z vs. Nas, LL vs. Moe Dee. This Sh*t would have never happened back in the day!
