As a Nas pseudo stan, I hate the fact that some other rapper is competing for the rap throne that’s in my mind. Though I will remain steadfast in my loyalties to the Queens Bridge King, Lamar will have to be the undisputed Crown Prince. Lamar’s recent performance on the departing Colbert Report HAS sealed the deal for me in that it is the top performance from any rapper on television this year. Dare I say…EPIC!
Lamar’s is accompanied by a few stellar names that make up the band in this performance. French producer Astronote, backup vocals by R&B artists Bilal and Anna Wise. Thundercat playing bass guitar and Terrace Martin on saxophone. The jazzy progressive feel of the track furthers the message which includes race, classism and power. You can watch the full interview below or jump to the 4:10 mark to see Kendrick spit hot fire in the performance.
Fire Right??!!
If you’re like me, due to the rapidness in delivery and the spiritedness of the band, I couldn’t make out all of his lyrics. Thankfully someone has taking the liberty and diligence to document them for us. You can read along to the performance below.

Maaaaannnnnnnnnnn….. K Dot came through and brought tha revolution wit him!! Been rocking to this everyday ever since my ace @lyric88 got me hip. I swear, he makes me so proud of my generation. We still got young artists, visionaries, and orators inspiring hearts and minds. Here, we have a VOICE!!
As far as the music goes, gawd there wasn’t a thing missing. The woodwinds, synths, and snaps were too smooth on that jazzy-ass bass line. The live vocal samples were sublime as hell. His delivery and energy are unparalleled. Everything he does is a classic now.
Nice broadcast my brotha!
Actually reading the lyrics was great and the musicality was different and new.
THE Commercial Success of Kendrick Lamar signifies a change in rap music for our generation. Major support behind such an intellectual artist can only be a positive thing. The culture of the rap music of our generation bothers me, but K. gives me hope.
…also fuck the grammys
I love the performance and the song. I’m really looking forward to this album now.
Saw this live broadcast. Kendrick Lamar just killed this! I called several of my dudes to see if I actually had just seen/heard what I had just seen/heard! None of ’em was tuned in. If it wasn’t for KL and Kanye, I would have abandoned Hip Hop years ago. Those brothas make the genre relavent for thoughtful Mutha F*ckas, like myself (…and Cypher Ave, evidently.) I can’t remember the last time I made this statement for a Hip Hop artist, but here goes, “I can’t wait for the new Kendrick Lamar joint to drop!!!”
There, I said it! I can’t believe I said it; but I said it!
