I first noticed this phenomenon when I was in middle school but didn’t fully attempt to analyze it until I was an adult. Regardless if it’s at the mall, grocery store, locker room, airport etc., why is it that 90% of men will quickly glance down towards another man’s crotch area at some point while in the men’s restroom?
I truly feel the majority of the time it’s not anything sexual. The quick glance can be done while one guy is leaving the urinal and another is approaching or one guy can be at the sink washing his hands while the other is entering the restroom and the quick glance down will happen. I believe men have always noticed other men doing it but I have never heard it discussed in open conversation amongst men.
This glance however is not done at the same frequency while actually at the urinals.
Whether if it’s at urinals with privacy walls, without privacy walls or at urinal troughs; men will usually piss and stare straight ahead in silence. A man may still size up another man (or men) from behind as he’s walking up to urinate. However usually the standard procedure is to size up, unzip, spit in the urinal and then piss in silence while staring straight ahead, looking down at your dick or up at the ceiling.
When I asked this question in a social media group, Cypher Avenue member and fellow blogger, RobFather X at Keepin’ It…REAL! said he feels the quick glance down is the equivalent of a dog smelling another dog’s butt.
While we’re pissing in a public bathroom around other men, we’re somewhat in a vulnerable state. I think consciously or maybe subconsciously; men size each other up…it’s a competitive thing. Most times it’s harmless with no type of aggression behind it but it still happens. Is this glance a part of our instinctual mammalian brains quickly doing a threat assessment?
Have you witnessed the split second men’s restroom glance down? Have you noticed that maybe you have done it yourself? Why do you think it happens? What say you?

LMAO!!! Oh yes this happens a lot! In my experience it actually happens at the urinals and not when I am just walking into the restroom or leaving it.
I tend to use the stalls / cubicles now because I am not sure if it was a color thing. I live in a predominately white area and every time I would go to the urinal to pee, the guy next to me or someone coming into the restroom would glance down quickly to size me up. It always seems to be white guys who do the looking and this in my own experience.
I use to have anxiety using public restrooms and if I had to use one I would hardly attempt to use a urinal. I would go for the stall. As an adult, I don’t give a shit anymore. I don’t normally see the glance down in regular places…most guys are awkward staring else where. In gay places…its a whole different story SMH. But there is a storied history of gay men and bathrooms.
Well, living here in NYC, every Men’s Public Bathroom is a “playground” so one can never REALLY determine whether the “Glance Down” is just an innate size up, or a look of “intent”. I kinda like the attention, tho I rarely do it myself. I’m one of those that will stare str8 ahead or up at the ceiling, but my peripheral is sharp so I always catch someone checkin’ it. LOL Most times I’m just trying to get the f#$k up outta there because I hate the smell of public bathrooms.
And other times?
I’m so surprised no one else has chimed in on this. LOL
I think in most cases, I think it’s just curiosity among the male species. I have noticed that some men stand further back from the urinals, while other stand closer in to make it more difficult to get a glance. In gay establishments. It seems to go further than the quick glance to almost a stare. Then comes the attempt to strike up a conversation while you’re trying to focus on getting the job done. With that being said, I try to use the stalls whenever possible.
I think it’s instinctual for men to look, we check each other out when changing in the locker room at the gym so a quick glance in a public bathroom is harmless…….My question is why is it that white guys feel as though they have to pull there pants down when standing at a urinal,
Happens more often than not. People are curious. For the most part, I don’t care. As long as a dude doesn’t try to reach over and grab my junk. I didn’t figure out that mens restrooms doubled as sex clubs till a few years ago. Very odd experience, to say the least.
