In my last post I listed the Masculine Gay Man’s Bill of Rights. It was a satirical list that I wrote a year ago in response to a series of feminine guys calling me insecure for not being attracted to them and the “Gay Lifestyle.”But I didn’t post that list to say that I dislike Feminine men. Well…I do, but let me clarify. I dislike the flamboyant, obnoxious Fems that embarrass everyone in restaurants, malls, etc. The same dislike applies to embarrassing, obnoxious “thugs” that curse loud and act stupid in public places like movie theaters. On the other hand, feminine guys that are just “soft” but not flamboyant are 100% cool in my book. Hell, our site brandishes a quote from James Baldwin and even he was not the most masculine man in the world. So I wanted to say to any “soft” men reading this blog, you’re great in my book. Many feminine men can’t help the way they are…just like I can’t help being masculine, its just who I am.That brings me to an independent film I saw just about an hour after after I posted the Masculine Bill of Rights that made me feel a little guilty. The movie is called “River Wash Over Me”.

Picture The film is a powerful, realistic story of a “soft” young homosexual boy that is thrown into his Aunt’s small southern town home after the sudden death of his mother. I could surprisingly relate to the introverted kid in many ways. He was so isolated, from being an outcast, that he lived in books and educated himself of a world bigger than what he could see around him.

What complicates things for him was being put in a room with Michael, his confused “Down Low” Masculine Gay Thug cousin with serious identity issues. That’s actually putting it lightly. This dude was fucked up. He ends up harassing, molesting and even repeatedly raping his younger “soft” cousin.

I’ve never been molested (or molested anyone) but I could even relate to Michael in some ways. When I was in high school I was that “in denial” masculine dude as well, taking my own insecurities out on others (called a lot of dudes “faggot”).

The film, while not perfect (the last 10 minutes were laughable), was pretty good if you have ever had identity issues as well. Also it makes you realize that feminine dudes can’t hide behind masculinity so they get the brunt of homophobia that many of us will never have to deal with.

I really enjoyed the film and was glad I bought the DVD. It’s also available on Netflix. Either way, its one to watch.- Nick D
