I guess this was bound to happen.
For years at Cypher Avenue we’ve advocated for more masculine representation in the gay space, so this was bound to happen.
Masculine leaning Gay men would soon step up to fill the void by either depicting images of the regular lives of regular men…or they would overcompensate by emulating the “thug” aspects of heterosexual men.
We saw it begin with the “masculine equals thug” depictions on web series like Freefall and No Shade.
Now we have this music video by new gay rapper from Houston, Fly Young Red, called “Throw That Boy Pussy.”
In this music video for his trap song we see the young, attractive “Red Hustla” (full of tattoos, bottles of top-shelf liquor and a squad of fitted cap wearing goons) at the club cheering for effeminate gay men in booty shorts to “throw that boy pussy.”
I get it.
This is a ratchet strip club song…for black gay men.
This isn’t that much different than Hip Hop artists such as Tyga, 2 Chainz, Big Sean and Juicy J in similar videos shouting that “bands a make her dance.” Hell, Tyga’s music video for “Rack City” features ass for days.
Why can’t gay men have their own equivalent version?
This is progress.
I may not be a fan of the gay men twerking in the booty shorts…or even a fan of calling a man’s anus a “boy pussy”…but there are many young masculine gay men who love this just as much as masculine straight men love the female twerking equivalent.
For better or worse, Fly Young Red is representing for the young gay men like himself.
Gay masculinity is slowly creeping to the forefront…So far, the gay thugs are winning…

Worst shit ever! Dude wasn’t that attractive and them “dudes” dancing…the worst!
LMAO ok let me get this out the way.
What I didn’t like:
1. The Dancers: they were obviously devoid of any of the masculine characteristics that attracts me to men in the first place. Having men mimic the actions of women is a turn off to the highest power.
2. The term Boy Pussy is also a major turn off! I don’t think I need to explore why.
What I did like:
1. The artist can actually rap! While the song itself was simplistic and gutter, his flows were at least consistent tolerable to the ear.
2. The song track and video quality was decent.
3. The rapper seemed convincingly masculine. Not that it matters, but for the theme of the video to be successful, the rapper needs to present a veneer of masculinity for this song to work. I think he pulled it off.
btw: I’m sure this video will go viral in a matter of hours. Finding itself on World Star Hip Hop, Bossip and the other trash sites.. I can’t wait to witness the dissonance it creates in the minds of the bigoted. 🙂
welp, that didn’t take long.. The Lords of Truth and Justice are already losing their collective minds the comment section on Bossip. I love it that this makes them so uncomfortable LMAO! 🙂
http://bossip.com/933712/gay-tastic-fly-young-red-throw-that-boy-p-must-watch-unless-youre-an-extreme-homophobe-video/
Why is it that you claim to hate black women and their view of homosexuality yet you with bated breath hit refresh repeatedly to read what they think about homosexuality?
Because I like pointing out their hypocrisy. Does that bother you?
No, it doesn’t bother me but it’s clear that it bothers you…don’t you feel that continually reading the hatred that they spew only adds to feelings of depression you have in regards to your sexuality?
@nick the reach you just tried is plain pathetic! It’s clear that you are indeed bothered by something as it relates to my opinions and/or comments on this site. Out of all the comments this article quickly received you mean to tell me you were only drawn to my comment on how the rest of the internet is reacting to this video? And WTF does depression have to do with this topic or the comments that have followed? Totally classless dude!
LOL aight dude…moving on…
Yeah you do that! Because anyone with half a brain can spot the Passive Aggression in your previous comment. It was uncalled for!
Bruh, I’m not afraid of you…No need for me to do anything passively. You brought up the homophobes and Bossip, not me. I could give a shit what they think about “us.” But you seemed almost excited to read their hatred.
You act like each of your comments on this site exists in individual bubbles. We’ve been reading your thoughts for a long time now. Collectively, they paint a picture of who you are…it may not be a clear picture, but its a picture nonetheless. I “reached” in my advice to you only because (in the recent past) you’ve made it very clear your disdain for (homophobic) black women yet you keep checking up on them. You’ve also made it clear (in the recent past) about your struggles with your sexuality. It just seemed to me that voluntarily reading on their hate for who you are only adds to the problem, not help it.
And just for the sake of argument, if any of that nonsense you just stated is true, why would that give you the reason to psychoanalyze every single comment I’ve made on this site in order to form some passive aggressive snarky attack? Everything you mentioned doesn’t have a damn thing to do with my comments on THIS ARTICLE. Your intentions were clear, and I think you’re keenly aware of that!
Regardless of your rationale, I found your words insulting, and if you’re a man of any character you’d offer an sincere apology.
LOL whatever dude. By your sensitive reaction I can tell that I hit a nerve…
Even though my name is at the top of the Cypher Avenue masthead I’ll go ahead, be the better man and say that I’m sorry for questioning your perverse excitement displayed on a gay friendly website to read insulting homophobic comments written in spaces like WorldStar and Bossip. I will now erase every comment you’ve ever written on this site from my memory.
#Irony (i.e. Back and Forth)
This Sh*t is progress??? If you say so, Bruh…
I’m surprised I kinda like it cuz I was ready to hot, im not gonna boop it in my headphones but its a good party/club song and just in time for pride season. As for the video it was dry.
It’s trashy and low class when straight men do it and trashy and low class when gay men do it. What ever happened to being a M.A.N.? Gay or straight, why can’t we just act like men? Rap made “hood” behavior mainstream and common sense…soft?! And now it has spilled over into R&B and everything else. Just sad.
One more thing..That is not MASCULINITY. No mature man whether 21 or 81 would act or speak like that. I know today that is what passes for masculinity among young folk but that image and behavior, gay or straight should still be considered a boy!
Let’s just hope it’s one big SAD joke!
I’m guessing you don’t know anyone 18 to 25, because that is exactly how they act.
The video is awlful but the song is good. I can see them playing this at a gay stripe joint in Atlanta. It would have been better if he actually had some sexy dancers and not some hood rats. The outfits were not good either. He just need an upgrade on a few things beside the liquor.
Other than “boy pussy” (WTF?) being said a million times. It wasnt that bad for real.
LOL. When I read “gay rapper from Houston”, I was intrigued. The song serves its purpose. A ratchet-@$$ song for the gay clubs. I do like how he is carving out his own lane so I can only respect that. Go get you some “boy pussy” y’all… ROTFLMAO!
He has more songs on SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fly-young-red
Thanks for the link @Africanking. I didn’t know he was on Sound Cloud. I rock out on SC every week.
For sure. He’s reppin tha H! I gotta hold him down! lol.
Dude’s now one of my fav underground rappers lol
lol!
Saw this shit earlier on and now today… I still think this shit was hilarious!!!! I had to go ahead and start nodding wit it. I read the purposes of this video as kinda satirical and subversive (Not saying that was necessarily the intent tho).
But given that my mans jacked the beat from Wayne’s “Wowzers” and queered the hell out of it, makes me kind of on board. Dude definitely ain’t doing nothing to reconfigure the masculine/thug image or the issue of promiscuity in ((black)) gay males, but the shit was still funny.
I say more gay rappers should explore/exploit trap music and fuck with the expectations there too! LMAO
…this racism is killing me inside…
I gotta admit, lil dude got some flow.
He does have flow. I will agree. If his lyrics were a few steps better, he would be up there with Bry’Nt and LastO.
Aye man, I fucks wit this dude… *shrug* lol… I know it’s bad, but I wanna ghost for this nigga forreal lmao…
LOL so can you rap? i know you’re a poet. I don’t know why I can’t get his song out of my head. This dude has over 100k view on YouTube as of today. Damn!
This dude performing in a club called Club Trade…. LMAO @ the name of the club. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxKVcMNyEEE
Ratchet, indeed.
I hate it when guys refer to their anus as pussy! Some guys think that it is so sexy, but heck to each his own. I’m still wondering if this dude is as masculine as he appears to be in the music video. You know some guys will have you thinking they are masculine, but the minute they drink some alcohol for instance the queen side comes out. It could all be an act! But at least from watching the video it seems like he is. I will commend him for coming out as a gay rapper and showing a different representation of what means to be gay. While I’m not in a hurry to download this song, he seems to have some level of talent with his rhymes. I found myself laughing quite a few times while watching the video so I was definitely entertained lol.
Does it matter if he’s masculine or not? He’s portraying a role, like any rapper does.
The reason why I brought up about his masculinity is because in the article Nick mentioned how this video shows progress in the sense that it is showing a young masculine gay dude who goes against the stereotype of being gay. Since this was discussed in the article, I was just wondering if he is indeed as masculine as he came off in the video. I see what you are saying though, there are many rappers and R&B singers who give us the persona that we normally associate with being a rapper or R&B singer. And some of these artists really aren’t the way they portray themselves to be in real life. This makes me think of Trey Songz for instance. I feel like he acts much harder and masculine than what he really is or maybe even Drake for that matter.
Funny as hell but I admire his ambition and willingness to take it there. Not my first choice of music but I applaud his hussle.
Ugh, he would never get this “boi pussy” lol. That is such a lame jail bird term and he’s just not doing it for me.
But he’s now an instant “gaylebrity” in the black gay scene coming to a black gay pride near you …. I just hope he don’t overdose on all the “boi pussy” he’s gonna have thrown at him now.
Like SERIOUSLY? ……SMH…Thanks@nick, I just waisted 4 minutes of my time that I will never get back.
This is progress…ummmmmm yeah. If I have a gay son, I hope he strives for this. *snark*
It’s progress in the sense that it shows masculine gay men instead of what you typically see.
ProgresS? LMAO!
Yes, very ratchet. I must admit though, I liked the overall song. I’m not a fan of the word “pussy” so “boy pussy” is extra bad lol. Every time they showed the guys twerking in the background, I laughed. It’s not like I have not seen it at the gay clubs but for some reason it was more funny seeing guys do it in a music video. I probably won’t rush out to buy this guy’s first album but I will watch any subsequent music videos if I need a good laugh.
so black Pegasus vs nick …..im here like …” alt=”” title=”” class=”bbcode-image” />
LOL I think we all are!!!
Some of yall need to lighten up. We complain about homophobic lyrics in rap, then when someone tries to bring our perspective into this music genre, we still complain.
If he is not attractive enough, or too ratchet, so what, big deal. At least give him give credit for at least trying.
I really tried…none of those cats had a stitch of ass. I’m not a rap fan, period, straight or gay, so my interest was never at risk of being lost. I will say that if this is what the gay ‘generation next’ is doing then let them do them. I disagree with it because I find it to be classless and feel as if it sets us all back but everyone else has expressed the right to fuck up the things that others have worked for so why not let this dude have his turn as well?
Are we being too critical. I think so. It takes alot of balls to do what he did. Yes, it could of been better but you got to give him credit for being himself and real. Some people do call it boi pussy. The rapper is actually from New Orleans and he does have talent. I took the time to find him on twitter and I must admitt he can flow a verse. I have issue with refer to him as a thug. This rapper is not a thug. He is a young masculine urban gay male who just portrait the reason why most gay men go to the club. Lets be real and honest….
Well said. As the author pointed out, this was bound to happen at some point. So why are some acting like “OMG the world is about to come to an end” ?
I agree with you. His music may not be to my taste (not a rap fan), but he appeals to the young, black gays going to the clubs now. This rap song is no worse than “Face Down, Ass Up” or “Work That Pussy”, both of which I have seen the dance floor become instantly crowded when they were playing.
I think what helps is that it fits a heteronormative mainstream narrative in its presentation. Since it essentially looks like a bunch thugs in the club lookin’ at people (men) shake their asses most effeminately. So even though its a gay artist with men, it looks otherwise. Which has its own marketing implications… lol … yay progress?
…
At first i thought this was a joke, this is proof we have sunk to the lowest of the low, I can’t see having a gay version of straight trash as progress. Nick normally I agree with you on a lot of issues but on this one I can’t, him being gay and emulating straight culture isn’t even the issue the issue is that it’s crappy ass hip hop, is this what hip hop has evolved into, non-rhyming lyrics and every rapper using the same cadence and pentameter on every song. Masculinity has nothing to do with it, let us not forget that there have been masculine gay rappers in the game for years. Brothers like KAOZ, Deep Dick Collective, Deadlee, a masculine gay rapper is nothing new.
Absolute rubbish!!!
Ok I have to admit. I actually like this song. Not a fan of the twerking but the songs pretty catchy.
This is my message to this young man.
Hello. I’m a 48 year old gay man from New Orleans, but live in Houston. I’ve been conversing about your video with friends online.
Please also understanding that I am not approaching you as an attack and of course not as judgment. Judgement means in most cases to make a final decision on someone, and no human can do that. And of course I’ve had my fair share of whoring around in my life, but at the end of the day most humans know it’s not a rewarding life. I am a gay Christian, and boldly state that on my profile with gay meeting sites. Some think it’s an oxymoron to say Gay and Christian, but I think and know otherwise by getting my closure with God and not man. So I don’t represent any religion as I don’t follow religions but God.
But I come to you as an urging. We’ve fought in our black community to get our young girls to not view the objectified women in rap videos as role models, and the struggle continues. Historically, these sex object images have shaped the way our young ladies dress, talk to men, and get abused by men, with the impression this is how life is suppose to be.
Well, now let’s go to the black gay community. A young man goes in to a gay club for the first time. The drag crew gets a hold of him, and help shape the way he talks, walks, and how he should be towards men. Before you know it, he’s in heels and wigs and calling himself fem. It’s not free expression any more but an actual stifled life…
Sometimes you just have to recognize when something was not created for you. And for me, this is one of those times. As a statement of change, I love that they made this song and recorded this video, especially if I never have to see it again.
