Fresh off of the critically derided final season of The Boondocks (a season the creator reportedly had nothing to do with), Adult Swim has released the trailer for Aaron McGruder’s newest show “Black Jesus.”
The live action show stars Charlie Murphy, John Witherspoon, Andrew Bachelor and Kaldrick King actor himself, Andra Fuller. Can we just take a brief moment of silence for Kaldrick King…and appreciate just how handsome Mr. Fuller looks on camera?
The series depicts what happens when JESUS returns as a black man wearing a weave living in a Compton, CA neighborhood.
It’s no secret that I wasn’t a huge fan of The Boondocks or Black Comedy in general. Considering how homophobic Aaron McGruder and many of the comedians attached to this show have been in the past, I’d be curious to see how “Black Jesus” reacts to the obligatory down-low black gay character that I’m sure McGruder will depict (stereotypes and all).
Outside of that speculation, the series looks really corny, albeit original. I’d be surprised if this does well considering how sensitive black audiences are to jokes about Christianity and the black church.
Again, I’m not a big fan of this “chitlin’ circuit” type of cooning black comedy, so I may be a little biased. Turns out Spike Lee Was Right.
The series premieres August 7th, 2014.
What are your views of the trailer?

Some of it looked kind of funny. Not sure I’d watch it though. Are you sure the creator is homophobic though? Everytime I’ve seen him speak I just assumed he was a gay.
Gay people can’t be homophobic?
….touche
I will be passing on this one. And I’ve always thought Aaron McGruder was gay, as well. Don’t know why, and I’ve only seen one picture of him (from when “The Boondocks” first came out. Go figure.
Some of his comedy definitely had elements of homophobia (the prison rape jokes he’s fond of in Boondocks is one example).
The premise can run thin if not executed well, but I’ll take a chance on the show.If Corey Holcomb is given any kind of room to be himself to some degree I’ll be sure to return.
I don’t know about this one. It looks like a farce, but not in a good way. I will give it a chance. Hope that I don’t have to pull the plug on this one like I did the current season of The Boondocks. That mess was terrible.
I’m there. Always been a fan of the Boondocks and always liked the satire. I feel like blacks don’t like shit said in public that’s said in private…because “white folks might be looking”.
Hommies over hoes
Kitchen Table Talk. But sometimes people need to hear it. It works both ways but black people get a lot of passes that white people do not. There are jokes you hear on every black comedian morning show, Smiley, Joyner, Harvey, that if a similar joke was said on a white morning show, people would be marching in the street. When Don Imus said “Hardcore hoes” a few years ago, no one would have batted an eye if it had been someone black.
TBH, they did look hardcore tho. lol
But all races and nationalities do it. It may not be PC but it’s true. I wish more people would accept the fact that we are all a little bit racist. And a little bit gay. And a little bit straight.
*edit Imus also said “nappy headed” too. But no one that I asked at the time could describe nappy hair using another term.
I think the show will be funny. I don’t think it’s on-the-nose chitterling circuit comedy. It’s farce. It’s political and religious satire, revealing the hypocrisy, the brainwashing and the sheer ridiculousness of organized religion.
I can’t wait to see dey look on dey black folkz faces when dey see wha dey lookin like in deez black faces. Dis gone be intrestin an dey tongs gon be wagon an alotta gay folks gon be madd as hell too cuz dey particeeate in dis type of “buffoonery and coonery” in dey real lifs. dis is well wat dey git gud ol satire’ of de reel black church how de do da dam thang demselvz, Black Yeezus omg. How dey gone ak when dey see dis mess? LOL.. too funny. I can’t wate lawdy.. o my yeezus. I’m lobin e’ery minit… got gay folks coonin’ too…. too dam funny… I tellz ya now alotta church folks daz gone be mad as hell 2. I’m laughin and da shhhh ain’t evn on t.b. yet. I tank da lord fo dis dey herr… Gawd bleessem Mr Errin Mcgruesome .. he gon need Yeezus
Yea I can’t wait to see this. I believe the black church is a joke anyway. Love me some Boondocks.
This looks funny as hell(no pun). I will watch just because I know Christians will be against it. Also I gotta support Aaron McGuder.
This will be interesting to watch. I would like to see where he takes this show. I also hope he finds time to come back to the Boondocks it needs his creative genius.
I also don’t think Aaron McGruder is homophobic. What he does is poke fun at the rampant and mindless homophobia in the black community on “the Boondocks”. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Aaron McGruder is actually gay. He’s an attractive guy and I’ve never seen him with a woman, and I wasn’t to able to find anything on the open internet that mentions a wife, girlfriend, or past girlfriends. Out of all the images of him on the net I’ve only been able to find one picture of him with chick. My conclusion is he’s “family” unless evidence surfaces to prove otherwise.
I remember seeing the early sketches of this show on Aaron McGruder’s YouTube account some years back. Didn’t appeal to me then. Nothing’s changed.
Good to see Andra though. He stays with a gig.
As far as the show doing well, I’m on the flip side Nick. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if it did well. Adult Swim’s audience buys into this off the cuff humor. Aaron’s name alone will at least guarantee that the premiere episode gets good ratings. But the black community and the Christian community’s feelings won’t really factor into whether the show gets green lit for a subsequent season. They’re certainly not the target demo. And even though there are apparently some Christian groups already making a public stink about the show, it’ll just be bonus publicity to fuel interest in the show. I’m just disappointed at the production quality. We’ve come to expect more from Aaron at this point.
