Personally, I think this was a bad move by Bernie. The fact that the pro-Hillary WSJ put it on its front page was a signal to undecided white moderate voters...not to blacks.

I agree with you. All conservative whites hate Sharpton and many really decent liberal whites see him as a charlatan and opportunistic leech. Is Sharpton relevant still? Why meet with him?

I agree as well. Also many black Americans(myself included) don't like Al Sharpton and know he's a fraud. This so called reverend has little or no influence or respect in the black community. He's pimp looking to capitalize on our collective misery. This is a bad move on Bernie Sanders part. I don't know who has advising him on these matters but they're giving him faulty advice.

There are so many nuances in politics, and sometimes there's never an absolute right way or wrong way to do things. And sometimes, decisions have to be made...damned if you do, damned if you don't. Bernie meeting with Al could have easily been one of these decisions. Sometimes you have meetings to say you have them and to keep people from working against you. At the same, as much as some folks don't like Al, he's not completely irrelevant. He has a sphere of influence and a national following, including a nationally syndicated radio show.

Granted, the WSJ wasn't necessarily doing Bernie a favor, featuring them on the front page. But conservatives read that paper and aren't voting for Bernie anyway. There is no peril in Bernie and Al meeting. As an informed black voter, I can appreciate that Bernie is doing the outreach.

Nah, I actually dislike Hillary Clinton about as much as I dislike Barack Obama (Hawkish, Ties to the Banks, Being Against A Policy Before They Were For It).

Yea I remember when Obama met with Sharpton too at Sylvias in 2008. But of course the big difference is Obama had black voters already in his pocket and swept the southern primaries. It's sad to say but if Bernie looked like Omari Hardwick he would get alot more black votes to compensate for losing white votes. Identity politics is real.

Ok I feel you on that but I don't think Obama is nowhere near as bad as Hilllary. He definitely has his major flaws though.

The dirty little secret is white people play identity politics as well. They're the masters of it. No pun. That said this meeting with Sharpton seems like mindless pandering. Some political consultant(probably white) who doesn't know shit about the black community convinced their client this was the way to gain black support.

He's deported more brown people and ordered to have more people of color killed than Hillary...so I'd say that worse.

I'd like to see what kind of politically disinterested folks would come out of the woodwork to comment on a presidential candidate who looks like Omari Hardwick.

Al hasn't been relevant since the late 80's. But Bernie's problem is he isn't relatable to black people, despite the fact that he marched with Dr. King and has been a proponent of civil rights for years. Sharpton would be the "obvious" choice since he's made himself out to be the leader of black people. Hillary shouldn't be relatable either considering she's afraid of black men with hoodies and was funded by the prison industrial complex, but she gets a pass apparently because her husband has street cred, despite his administration being responsible for some incredibly destructive civil rights legislation.

    Go figure.

John Lewis on Bernie Sanders’ civil rights work: ‘I never saw him’ | Political Insider blog

Civil rights leader John Lewis on Thursday dismissed Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’ 1960s work on racial equality, saying, “I never saw him. I never met him.”

“I never saw him. I never met him,” Lewis told reporters. “I chaired the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee for three years from 1963 to 1966. I was involved in the sit-ins, the Freedom Rides, the March on Washington, the march from Selma (Alabama) to Montgomery and directed the voter education project for six years. I met Hillary Clinton, I met President Clinton.”

True. But we shall see what kind of terrible shyt happens under a Hillary presidency compared to an Obama Presidency. She did spearhead a bill with her husband that destroyed and sent many black and brown folks to prison in this country. We shall see.

Lol John Lewis trying real hard. So because u you never saw him personally, that means he never did any racial equality work? This is why we need term limits on congressmen.

^^So if Hillary gets the dem nomination, are you going to not vote for her? I guess being in a state that is not a swing state, you do have the luxury of voting/or not voting your conscience. Georgia(Jaw-ja lol) will go to the GOP anyways. Just watch, Either Ohio or Florida will once again manage to f@ck it all up. I hope it is Flaw-duh and not us up here

This may be an unpopular opinion but I'm compelled to share it anyway. I'm not too concerned about those other so called "people of color." Far too often those other people of color are more than willing to to get into bed with white supremacists and support anti-black attitudes, policies, and structural conditions particularly when they immigrate to the USA.

On the House floor, 39 members opposed cutting off Prisoners from Federal Education Funds. Of those in the House who opposed that vote, few are still serving; Reps. John Lewis, Jose Serrano, Charlie Rangel, and Bernie Sanders stood together at that time and continue to serve today.

Now ask yourself...does what Lewis said today make sense?

He was saying he never met him during the civil rights movement and marches during the nineteen sixties. Context is very important. Nice try with the pic though-does not look like the 60's to me. :sass2:

:lupe1: I think John Lewis was referring to the movement during the 60s and 70s. At least that was what the journalist asked him during the interview.

Say what you want about Sharpton but he was there to funeralize and bring awareness to sean bell, trayvion martin, mike brown and eric gardner. He has a community organize which means votes and influence for a political candidate trying to get black votes. I get what John Lewis said though. I mean wouldn't you still be mad if you were marching and having dogs and hoses put on you and many of the white politicians were hesitant to give there support to you then. Its kind of hard to forget. Bernie should been out trying to get blacks votes a lil earlier. I know who he is but Im young. People like my parents and older have never heard of him.

From Bernie Sanders victory speech in New Hampshire:

"But, I also hope that we all remember — and this is a message not just to our opponents, but to those who support me as well. That we will need to come together in a few months and unite this party, and this nation because the right-wing Republicans we oppose must not be allowed to gain the presidency."

Bernie Sanders’ New Hampshire primary victory speech (full transcript and video)

In all fairness, that are plenty of politicians no one has heard of until they are in the public eye. That public eye being media, the same media that constantly push certain narratives.

This is why voters are supposed to take this time now to learn the candidates they don't know. Plenty of people had no idea who Barack Obama was 9 years ago. Back then many black people said they wouldn't vote for him because he wasn't black enough.

That might be true but there was still a large portion of black people that knew of him/was on their radar since he had history in Chicago, was apart of the congressional black caucus and is momentous 2004 speech. I give it to you I was not sure if that funny named dude would be president so soon but he was on my radar. Berine for some ppl comes out of nowhere for some.

The majority of black folks are/were not in Chicago and didn't follow its politics. At this moment in time I will bet the majority of black people don't know the current members of the CBC. BUT Obama did make an impression in 2004 at the convention.

If black people at this point in time, don't know who Bernie Sander its because they don't want to know or don't care to know. There are vids of him out that are from over 20 years ago and the internet is available on most cell phones.

No I won't be voting for Hillary if she gets the nomination. I would however force myself to vote for her if I lived in a swing state. But it would be more of a vote against the Republican candidate. At least Hillary pretends she cares. Kasich wouldn't be so bad though.

I get what your saying. Sometimes I have to remember that everyone is not political engaged as I am. I did voter reg in 2012 for a majority black community you would be surprise the simple stuff people are aloof too. I remember doing research on the CBC in high school and seeing that funny obama name lol. My interest could have also been sparked because one of my high school Vice principals was also running for state senator lol.

This is what I will be doing. I am not fond of either of them, and Ocky has brought up some points about her that are pretty odious that I really did not appreciate as much as I do now. I would only prefer her because I believe at this time that she is more electable. But no matter which one, I will hold my nose and vote against the GOP nominee. I have to living in a swing state. Bush stole the 2000 election in Florida and stole the 2004 election in Ohio. (thank you Kenneth Blackwell and co.).

In Columbus, I had to wait nearly 4 hours to vote in my intown mixed middle/working class neighborhood, 2 hours of that was outside the building in a cold rain. Then I went home and saw on the news how many of the suburban lily white voting places had been nearly deserted the whole day. There were all kinds of shenanigans that went on to reduce the dem vote, and I was furious. It can really be that close in this state. I was very proud of our mixed neighborhood, whites, blacks, hispanics, asians, all pulling together, people who voted already bringing food and drink while everyone else waited in the lines snaking all around the building-some even brought liquor so some people got a little drunk, lol. But there was a lot of comraradarie and good cheer. And our district did vote overwhelmingly Democratic. But I wonder how many people got discouraged and went home. And from what I heard, it was even worse in mostly black areas.

Regarding Kasich, I live here and have known how he is or years. IMO, he is a tea party conservative and a religous fundamentalist, as well as an egomaniac and is a wolf in sheep's clothing. make of that what you will. IMO NONE of the GOP candidates can be trusted with SCOTUS, especially given how ancient most of them are.
