Happy Birthday Miles Davis

Today is the 90th anniversary of the great Miles Davis's birth. Man, it's hard to believe it's been a quarter-century since his death. Anyway, here's my both my favorite jazz standard and favorite Davis tune (from an album that's chock full of standards). And like all great minds and talent, Davis enjoyed being surrounded by and nurturing other talents, from John Coltrane, to Herbie Hancock and many others. As great as Coltrane was, Cannonball Adderly (literally) blows him away in the first solo on this track. Whenever I hear this, I'm reminded of a time when real music ruled the scene and black men had such class they wore suits and ties to picket lines.

 

Yeah, it's all gray and cloudy in my side of 'Murica right now, so that hit the spot (lol). But on sunny spring/summer days, this is usually the MD tune that's playing on my brain's inner soundtrack:


Much as I like Coltrane, my favorite Davis ensemble was the second Great Quintet.
