Kevin Feige Calls "Doctor Strange's" Ancient One "Very Androgynous"

In the upcoming "Doctor Strange" film, Tilda Swinton will play Strange's mentor, the Ancient One -- who is traditionally depicted in Marvel Comics as an Asian male character. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained how they chose Swinton for the role and why the character will be "very androgynous."

"Feige explained how the change came about, saying, "I think if you look at some of the early incarnations of the Ancient One in the comics, they are what we would consider today to be quite, sort of, stereotypical. They don't hold up to what would work today. Also, within the storyline of the comics, and our movie, 'the Ancient One' is a title that many people have had. We hit very early on on, What if the Ancient One was a woman? What if the title had been passed and the current Ancient One is a woman? Oh, that's an interesting idea. [Clicks fingers.] Tilda Swinton! Whoa! And it just hit."

"She has this amazing [ability to] harness of this androgynous sense. So, we use the term 'her' and 'she' in the film but, other than that, it's very androgynous. Because it doesn’t matter," he added.

"I think it's all in the eye of the beholder," Swinton herself weighed in when asked about her character's gender.

Directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Chiwitel Ejiofor and more, "Doctor Strange" opens on November 4, 2016.

REALLY? So they went from Asian man, to androgynous, to white woman. To do something "different" you cast a white woman...you know because movies don't have enough white women in them already. If you wanted to really do something different that wasn't stereotypical, how about casting an Asian woman? Fuk you Hollywood.

Hmmm,I'm a bit surprised they'd do this after all the Mandarin backlash.

I know in the fantasy/movie world anything is possible. What kills me is if your going to get white actors to play roles originally created for ethical people they would at least try to make the white people look ethnic looking. Like they dont try to give them tans, darker makeup, lip injections, ethnic hair or anything. With all the advances in special effects and makeup they could at least try to fool us.

Naw bruh. I'm not down with the blackface. I'm sure that would bring even more backlash too. I wouldn't have a problem with white people playing fictional "ethnic" roles if it was even all around, but it's not. People go crazy if you even consider making a presumed white character black or another person of color, but won't bat an eyelash if you make actual historical figures who were people of color in real life, white.

I'll just go ahead and say this evening though most will disagree. Most of the Marvel movies suck ass! With exception of maybe Iron Man and the Avengers. Most of the characters don't look good or not even close to how they look in the comics and cartoons and they ignore the continuity of the comics in many areas. This just the latest example of that.

I love Tilda, but I can't get down with the white washing of the Ancient One. He's a Tibetan monk for goodness sake! I guess they feel they've filled their "ethnic" quota by making Baron Mordo black?
