Rapper Killer Mike at Bernie Sanders rally: “a uterus doesn’t qualify you to be president”

Rapper Killer Mike at Bernie Sanders rally: "a uterus doesn’t qualify you to be president"

Rapper Killer Mike, a prominent supporter and campaign surrogate of Bernie Sanders, took some heat Tuesday for saying at a Sanders rally that "a uterus doesn't qualify you to be president."

Critics decried the comment as sexist, and Killer Mike quickly responded that he was taken out of context and was quoting someone else. But the full context doesn't make it much better.

Speaking at Morehouse College in Atlanta in front of about 4,800 people, Killer Mike started off with a passionate speech about what it's like to be a black man in America and be faced with constant suspicion — even from the Secret Service agents protecting the candidate he's stumping for. That led into a discussion of which candidates actually had the policies that would help black Americans. Then he said:

When people tell us "hold on, wait a while" — that's what the other Democrat is telling you. Hold on Black Lives Matter, just wait a while. Hold on young people in this country, just wait a while. And then she get good, she have your own momma come to you, your momma sit down and say, "Well you're a woman." But I talked to Jane Elliott a few weeks ago, and Jane said, "Michael, a uterus doesn't qualify you to be president of the United States. You have to have policies that's reflective of social justice."

Jane Elliott, whom Killer Mike has talked about in public before, is an educator and activist who created the famous "brown eyes/blue eyes" experiment — teaching her students about racist discrimination by treating them differently for a day depending on whether they had blue or brown eyes.

Killer Mike defended his remarks against critics by pointing out that they weren't his words but Elliott's. He also hinted that because Elliott is a "progressive activist woman," that's a defense against charges of sexism:

Critics countered that it doesn't matter whether a woman said it first. Women say sexist things about other women all the time — and Killer Mike is still the one who decided to cite the quote approvingly.

Others said part of the blame lies with the Sanders campaign:

Of course, prominent supporters of Hillary Clinton have also gotten in trouble over sexist comments recently. Madeleine Albright and Gloria Steinem both suggested (and then both publicly apologized for suggesting) that young women who support Sanders over Clinton are doing it because they don't know any better or don't care about the feminist cause.

That's probably the sort of thing Killer Mike was referring to when he suggested that Hillary wants "your own momma" to guilt-trip you about gender. And although it might seem strange to accuse Clinton of telling Black Lives Matter activists to "wait" on the same day she delivered a major speech calling out systemic racism, it's also important to ask serious questions about which candidate's policies are better for racial justice.

But that doesn't make it okay to reduce Clinton's candidacy, her qualifications, and the reasons people support her — which may have nothing to do with her gender, and may also include a legitimate desire to elect the first woman president — to her reproductive organs. It's not just crude and demeaning, it also trivializes a serious and complicated fight for gender equality and representation.

Fool bwoy. Yes, I think that's all that needs to be said.

Oh, wait, I found another- Bernie Sanders may be able to win a primary and even a nomination, but unlike Obama who was actually electable, Sanders will lose in the general. Probably to Rubio (there's still a 51% chance the GOP kneecaps Trump-49% chance he gets to nom). Self-described socialists don't get elected. Especially socialists who say that middle-class taxes need to be higher. That won't win in Virginia, Ohio, Florida, New Hampshire, Colorado, Iowa or Pennsylvania.

If you look at the head to head general election polls, Sanders does way better than Hillary Clinton against the Rethuglican candidates. If you think about it, it makes sense. Clinton doesn't attract independents. Hell, even alot of Democrats dislike her. She is definitely the democratic candidate that will create the lower voter turnout. Hillary Clinton is actually the unelectable one.

If anyone is keeping score of campaign surrogates who said some fucked up things at rallies that campaign staff and candidates regret, let me know. I got a lotta data for you.

The article linked is about my current governor's campaign surrogate who made disparaging comments about the President. As you see, the headline says, "Ted Nugent comments may hurt Greg Abbott campaign," but clearly, the man is now the governor.

Granted, this is a Red state, but my larger point is that campaigns every year and every where have surrogates who push the envelope and sometimes go overboard with comments. It's not ok and not excusable; however, it happens the time. (We all know someone who says what's on their mind too much--family and friends--and we hope to God we are never in their presence when they say something inappropriate or hear through someone else how they said something that would embarrass you.)

We shouldn't assume that because a person is allied with them they necessarily support those particular views, which often, they are unaware of. Furthermore, when surrogates go rogue, they are often taken off the campaign trail.

At the end of the day, these things are worth pointing out if it is a pattern of behavior with campaigns, or if surrogates on campaigns are not properly publicly admonished and removed from representing the campaign. Beyond that, this is a non-issue, unless you need a reason to not like Bernie.
Ted Nugent's comments may hurt Greg Abbott's campaign

I don't know why people keep forgetting ELECTION RESULTS. If Bernie pulls in more people to the polls, he would be winning every primary by huge margins. He's now lost two of three and will lose the next by a substantial margin. People have to stop looking at polls and at actual results. SMH

Can't use that argument, sir. He actually has pulled in more voters to the polls. Check the actual number of voters who went to cast ballots for him as of now in all three states. (The narrative in Iowa is that Hilary won, but Bernie actually got the popular vote.) Polls don't always get it right, but it has gotten a lot better and sophisticated. It's funny you say look at the actual results. Against polling, Bernie has exceeded expectations or has come within the margin of error.

If Bernie's only rationale for being in the race is he can start a revolution and bring more people to the polls, then he has lost on that metric already. There have been fewer voters in the democratic primary this year than in 2008. Where are all the warriors he was supposed to bring out? After South Carolina and Super Tuesday, I'm 100% sure that more democrats will have voted for Hillary.

When I speak of polls, i'm stressing that pundits place too much empahsis on polls instead of letting people vote at the ballot box. Remember in 2008 when all the polls showed Obama smashing Hillary in New Hampshire and she actually won that race. People use polls to shape narratives that may or may not be real. Hillary actually won women, AA and Latinos in Nevada although pre-caucus polls had Bernie winning those groups. IJS

Where did that come from? I don't think Bernie or anyone has said that that was his only rationale for being in the race. 2008 established some precedents that would have to be met in order to generate the same levels of support in 2016. I do not think anyone is oblivious to the fact that the first and foremost precedent rules Bernie out. He aint Obama. But the point remains, Bernie has brought MORE voters out to vote in 2016 than Hilary. Hilary has not blown Bernie out of the water in ANY respects with her two wins, while Bernie did with his one.

I don't disagree that politicos and pundits sometimes place too much emphasis on polling and create narratives that may be real or not. But they do that without polling as well. The narrative now is Bernie's campaign is done because he "lost two states," when in fact he can create a pretty strong counter-narrative that he has brought more people to the polls than Hilary and that his message is resonating more as people get to know who he is.

All in trying to say is if Bernie hasn't introduced himself well enough to people after all of these debates and three primaries, then he is doomed. Maybe he's gotten more votes thus far but this far isn't the end. I think Bernie is a nice guy but he's a one trick pony. I'd vote for him over trump but not Hillary.

Indeed. I don't see him winning the nomination, not when he loses black folks 22/73 to Hillary this early. In SC, if these numbers hold up, he might lose by 20 pts. His calling card is "revolution". Riiight.

You are correct. Bernie doesn't really have a chance now. He simply isn't winning over minorities. The Clinton Brand is like Digorno Pizza. People buy it because it's the most popular frozen pizza brand instead of putting in the work to research and find better options. And trust me there ARE better options for you. Weird comparison I know lol. If democrats voted for Obama because he was to the LEFT of Hillary in 2008. Why are they not voting for Bernie? This is a great example that politics is a sociological experiment. How many people would have listened to Bernie more and not dismissed him if he was handsome, younger, female, or even black? And I say that acknowledging that if Bernie WAS black he would lose alot of white voters too while gaining black voters. Identity politics is played on both sides. JFK won the 1960 election based off the way looked on tv in comparison with Nixon. Politics is about relatability and visuals more than policy alot of times.

All I know is Bernie starting out at the negotiating table with a 15 dollar min wage, universal health care, free public college, and a detailed anti-institutional racism policy would improve more for African American Lives in this country than we could ever dream of. Pair his policy with his actual political history ---the shyt matches up. Hillary in comparison has a political history that does not match up to what she is saying now. The myth of Bill Clinton Presidency won't go away. Yes overall the economy was good, but many of our brothers and sisters(black and gay) were USED to get elected and suffered major setbacks because of policies supprted by Hillary and her husband. Prison pop increase, cuts to social safety nets, wall street deregulation, Defense of Marriage Act, Don't ask Don't tell. Hey black and gay folks give me your votes so I can please the conservative right.

Ok done ranting LOL. I'm just preparing for the American oligarchy to elect Hilary Clinton or Donald Trump. Two people who havent thought about anyone but themselves or wiped their own a** in 3 decades. Oh I hear billionaire Michael Bloomberg is running too. America you definitely get what you deserve.
