So there it is. ‘The Decision’ everyone has been waiting for, and many expected. Lebron James will don the purple and gold for the Los Angeles Lakers next year. The basketball world has exploded as the ongoing rivalry between Lebron James and the Golden State Warriors has shifted to California.

In truth this move shouldn’t worry Golden State too much. No doubt it’ll be a fun rivalry, but as Lebron found out in Cleveland he needs help to beat the Warriors. Los Angeles does have some good nice young players, and a nightlife that always seems to claim one win off the Warriors every year. But it’s not enough to knock off the champs.

For Lebron James it is an interesting decision. He’s surrounded by a young core of players that will improve as he ages in a city where he clearly wants to live for several years. But it’s not the sort of superteam he formed the last two times he was a free agent. There’s no Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh coming with him. There’s no Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love either.

The dream of a big three of Lebron James, Paul George, and Kawhi Leonard died after Paul George unexpectedly re-signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder on a long-term contract. Leonard may well end up on the Lakers, but the Spurs will demand a king’s ransom, leaving the cupboard bare.

There’s a good chance Carmelo Anthony gets bought out, or waived and stretched, by the Thunder to save them from the exorbitant luxury tax bills they face. Salary cap guru Nate Duncan estimated stretching Anthony could save $100m. You’d have to think that there’s a good chance Anthony would end up in Los Angeles, finally playing alongside his old friend.

Again though, this isn’t the 2012-13 Carmelo Anthony who led the league in scoring and the Knicks to the second seed in the Eastern Conference. This is the Carmelo Anthony who was a net negative in the playoffs for the Thunder. His defense, never spectacular, is as ropey as it’s ever been. He’s not moving the needle.

Warriors fans will be upset at the loss of fan-favourite Javale McGee, who followed Lebron to Los Angeles. He was a real feel-good story, rescued from the NBA scrap heap with a non-guaranteed training camp invite two years ago. He rewarded their faith with countless athletic dunks and solid play on the way to two championship rings. But Golden State was always looking to move on this year to get Damian Jones more playing time. Whether that’s the right decision or not, time will tell.

The early stages of NBA free agency have been pretty kind to the Warriors. While all the attention is on Lebron James’ megamove to Los Angeles, Golden State still has one eye on the Houston Rockets, the team that almost knocked them out this year. Trevor Ariza’s move to the Phoenix Suns was a significant chess piece off the board in a potential repeat of the 2018 Western Conference Finals. His length, switching ability, three point shooting, and veteran leadership were a crucial part of the Rockets’ identity. Houston will struggle to replace him.

With Lebron James off the board, player movement will ramp up over the next few days. The Warriors will carry on the course they’ve plotted all along, knowing that a fun intrastate rivalry does not yet make for a juggernaut that threatens their crown.
