Men who have an effeminate tone of voice, speech patterns, and mannerisms are automatically pegged as homosexual. Homosexual men who don't display those traits tend to fly under the radar which is why people think certain men "sound gay" or that gayness has a sound.

This issue is complicated. My opinion from my observations of gay men there are some guys who are naturally feminine and they can't help how they sound. There are some who retreat to gay only spaces and adopt stereotypical gay speech patterns and slang. For then it's a learned behavior. Like any other learned behavior it can be unlearned.

There's a documentary about this out, it's on Netflix now. It goes in depth about it @ockydub. It think it's called 'Do I Sound Gay?'

I feel like I have a gay voice and it's not intentional. It is what it is. I think there's a difference between someone naturally sounding feminine and someone going over the top which is annoying. However, someone trying to stress how masculine they are in their voice annoys me too. Negro you do not sound like Barry White regularly.

From the article, one of the questions that we should continue to ask is: "Does it matter?" This man felt ashamed of his voice at one point, something he can't change and is a major part of his existence. I couldn't help but think, "If your voice is a bit light then so be it. Love yourself and move on...and quit whining about it." But then I thought to myself, theres a reason he would have to feel this way. I mean once again we have another way to "shame" others within our society. We slut shame or reverse slut shame for some. We fat shame, gym-rat shame, age shame, bottom shame and now...voice shame. With all of this shaming we can't be surprised that he or anyone with a light voice would feel this way. It would be nice to eventually get to a place where we just accept others for who they are. Eh...just my humble opinion.

Im sorry, but I refuse to cosign that all of these grown azz, post pubescent gay men walking around sounding like valley girls and hood rat chiks just 'happened' to end up w these voices. It's pure BS. Trust, I'm not shaming them, but I am calling them out for the 'its just my voice' cries. Im sooo over these gray area thirsty gays.

I've learned over the years that even just discussing the issue can generate shame or the perception that men included in this group should be ostracized. Not the case at all. It's just a very interesting subject...gay men from all parts of life, regions and nationalities all somehow sounding the same. That's like seeing a Star Trek movie where aliens from vastly different planets all have seem to have an American English accent.

Thats my thing tho, how are u being shamed when ur what the greater world considers and accepts as gay?

If we wana talk about shame, how bout I'm shamed becus I'm a 'loss' to single blk women (bein all masculine n 'str8 seeming'), but the fem sounding, softer guy is a welcome 'gained' accessory.

Im kinda getting off into tangent land, but I'm sooo over masculine men having to apologize n make feminine men feel like we're not attacking them when we say we're not into men who act like ladies. Like, wtf?!

That's the dagger right there, though. Many feminine and feminine sounding men may emulate traits traditionally associated with women, but they still do consider themselves men (rightly so). And they want to be seen attractive by other men (gay voice and all), especially the men who embody the traits traditionally associated with heterosexual men.

That's why we see many guys try to blur the gender lines and guilt/shame/encourage more of the rigid thinking men to not discriminate based on voice or mannerisms.

However, when this subject comes up, its often viewed as a negative...like "why do you talk like that?" No one would say that about a NYC accent...or a island accent...or a British accent...It would just be accepted as the way the person speaks. But to me, that is what makes the conversation interesting...unlike those aforementioned accents, the "gay voice" seems to not be based on where you grew up, who raised you or your race/ethnicity...

Exactly! Idk how to bold the part that Im emphasizing, but the point is that gay voice is not a damn accent. If sum1 decides they want to emulate how women act n talk in their desire to be wanted by masculine men, then more power to them. Buuut, Im tired of being forced to apologize because I don't fuk w it.

Id never never disrespect anyones stance as a grown man. Thats not the argument. But dont get mad at me becus I like having balls and testosterone, and the fact that I only fux w other men I have that in common with.

And before it gets twisted, Im not talking about being 'hypermasculine' or anything extra. Natural masculinity is exactly what it is. No redefining wanted.

Would you feel the same if it was a group of "naturally masculine" black men that were discussing their attraction to only light-skinned men with "good hair."

I do believe that when it comes to who you want to date, you have the right to be as rigid and excluding as you want. But I can also see how discussions like this can make people who "sound gay" have to feel like they are on the defensive, when in many cases they have no rhyme or reason for why the talk the way they do...I knew some kids back when I was coming up who had that "gay voice" or gay twang, it made them instantly suspect sexually and ridiculed, even before we all had our first pubes...so its not just about, "why don't you want to date me?" from their point of view.

I think thats different. Dont get me wrong, Im dark skinned w a shaved head, so I dont fit that bill. N I have 0 problems w sum1 not wanting me, becus plently mofos do. Not bein cocky, Im just too old to act like Idk whats goin on.

But, thats purely being closed-minded on something that cant be changed. Talking w a high azz pitch in an effort to sound more feminine is a choice.

But if ppl are defending their own CHOICES...

The gay lil boys we grew up w were perfectly free to grow up n 'man up' as they went from boys to grown azz men. Like I said, if u choose to vocally emulate femininity, thats ur right. But just like YOU said, gay is not an accent!

Man this is a fine line...I agree with you that MANY dudes choose to emulate sassy 16 year old black girls...but I do think that some men can't help the way the sound and it would be disingenuous for them to perform a more "masculine" or "butch" sounding voice just to fit into preconceived boxes that people have if that's not what comes natural to them.

Yea, if its sumthin that cant be helped, its one thing. However, thats def not the case most of the time.

Being an artist, I cant say Ive lacked exposure to my share of gay mofos. I know sooo many guys who I knew in college, who were super flamboyant 18/19 year olds who sounded super gay, who are now 32/33 year old men w a lil bass in their voices. They basically grew up n manned up, and stopped emulating what they had seen as, and associated w being gay.

Its funny because in the documentary this post was about "Do I Sound Gay" the filmmaker discovers from straight friends and family members that the exact opposite happened with him. He started sounding MORE gay once he came out. He said he couldn't even remember making the transition and had always wondered if he just always sounded this way. They said it seemed like he was exaggerating his voice as a symbolic gesture of his new found comfort with his sexuality.

I think that applies to many men, but def not all....

The larger question often asked by @ockydub is why do they all essentially sound the same no matter the ethnicity or location?

Exactly. Cus its learned behavior. He came out n started 'gaying' it up. Black (white washed, at least) white, Puerto rican or asian, they all sound the exact damn same. Gay as hell!

Ima just say fuk it n go str8...

I understand and agree what she is "trying" to say. However, I would add that it's not just white men but-ALL other races of people. Black culture has always been the most imitated in this country. I can't tell you how many white girls that I hear at work. I hear em say "Imma need you to get it together", "just saying", and "what had happened was."

The white girls purse their lips, put their hand up, and get in "pure ghetto stereotypical mode." The black woman is the backbone -and never get the honor and respect that they deserve. I love my sistas-just unfortunately not sexually...
