While I’d already repeatedly heard Norwegian duo Nico & Vinz’s international hit “Am I Wrong” playing in elevators, gas stations and H&M stores since the beginning of the summer, it wasn’t until I saw the music video that I realized how gay the song was. And I mean this in a good way.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not implying that artists Nicolas Sereba and Vincent Dery are gay themselves, I’m just saying their song is inadvertently very gay. For those of you who haven’t heard the song, here’s the music video:
I’ll get to the visuals in a minute, but let’s take a look at some of the lyrics:
Am I wrong
For thinking out the box from where I stay?
Am I wrong
For saying that I choose another way?
I ain’t trying to do what everybody else doin’
Just ’cause everybody doin’ what they all do
If one thing I know, I’ll fall but I’ll grow
I’m walking down this road of mine, this road that I call home
Yeah, I know. Very generic. These lyrics could apply to just about anything. Follow me, though. Re-read these lyrics from the context of a man struggling with and finally embracing his homosexuality, despite what his family and friends may think. Here’s another verse:
Walk your walk and don’t look back,
Always do what you decide
Don’t let them control your life, that’s just how I feel oh whoa
Fight for yours and don’t let go,
Don’t let them compare you, no
Don’t worry, you’re not alone, that’s just how we feel
For thinking that we could be something for real?
If you tell me I’m wrong, wrong
I don’t wanna be right, right
If you tell me I’m wrong, wrong
I don’t wanna be right
No, you’re not wrong. You two CAN be something real…
Seriously Gay!
There have been plenty of dudes I’ve dated that I said those exact words to!
“Yo, I’m digging you, man. Am I wrong for thinking me and you could do this thing here?” – Nick Delmacy to a few guys in the past
Okay, yes I know. I’m projecting my own perceptions into these attractive, talented young men and their awesome music video. Its like a Rorschach test. I already admitted earlier this year that I’m in “love mode” due to the fact that its 2014 (aka 2/14 aka Valentines Year).
Nico & Vinz have already explained what the song is actually about and its far from anything gay:
The song is actually about going after your dreams despite naysayers?!
Nope, I’m stubborn. I’ll go on believing that “Am I Wrong” is a gay Coming Out and Dating/Marriage anthem and no one can change my mind!

I thought i was the only one whi felt like that about the song but yeah the dark skinned one was on Ebro in the Morning talking about the song. He talked about how he wanted to follow his dreams instead of doing how all his African associates and friends were pursuing advanced degrees. He said he did not want to have a back up plan like his African friends told him. He really wanted to make the music thing work. Sadly the album will only move from 10,000 to 15,000 in the first week. The first single as we all know was a smash hit and the second single, “In Your Arms”, is growing in popularity too. They will keep moving singles but yeah. Not one album released over the past year has gone platinum. On 10/27/2014, that is expected to change with the release of Taylor Swift next album 1989.
First, I love this song. Its been on my repeat status for quite some time. After reading your thorough analysis, I can definitely see where you can find a gay anthem in the lyrics and the music video doesn’t help either. I think that the musicality is also overly theatrical which is yet another sign from the Gaydom. Also I am going to three Gay Weddings this fall/winter and I am sure this song is going to be on their playlists.
I actually like this song, never knew the name of it nor the artist(s). Also never got a “gay” vibe from it either, but then again I never analyzed the lyrics. Nice post, makes on think.
I thought it was Akon. lel
LMAO ME TOO!
Yeah, I need to start using Shazam on these songs after the 3rd time I hear them.
I thought Fancy was by Gwen Stefani for months. lol I was thinking “Oh, she’s released this because she’s gonna be on The Voice.” I didn’t know it was Iggy until one of those award shows was earlier this summer. lol
Dude, I thought it was Gwen Stefani for the longest time too. LOL!! I didn’t even know who the fuck “Iggy” was until the other day TMZ was saying something about her and Snoop.
They gay together!
Nah, for real tho, I totally see where ur coming from based on certain lyrics, but I also got a diff chunk of lyrics in the YouTube snip where they made sense of it. The song is pretty much a smartly written song that can be anyone’s anthem/turn up song, aka, a hit!
norwegians can legally get married so nico&vinz dont care if u are gay they just look on gays as regular humans
I guess I could see the gay references now that someone has pointed it out and I was looking for it, but my first thought would be to take it in the general way the artists state the song to mean. And even though there was a hug and the video showed the two men searching for each other, I still really didn’t get a gay vibe. It seemed more like a brotherly bond to me. But I understand the “gay” view too. So, I guess the answer would be yes. If the person listening wants to take it as a gay empowerment song, it could easily fit the bill.
Art should be subjective. If you can apply this song to something this close to your life then it’s done its job.
@nick….normally you be on to something, but this time you are kinda…

Wow we men are so visual! A picture says a thousand words, well spoken my brotha!
Yeah, I could see both sides. It has a very generic message, but what the artists said explaining the song made sense. I could see where Mr. Delmancy could see it in terms of “LGBT Empowerment”. But, as he himself pointed out, it depends on the listener. It’s cool that there song can be seen in so many “positive” ways. I give Nico & Vinz much credit for their intelligent song writing, that is capable of being seen as so many different things.
Thank you Nick for writing this article!!! Thank you! Thank you!!! I felt the same about this song for a while now, ever since I first heard it a while ago!!! I mean even their neewest music video “here in your arms”, it gives that same type of feeling. Plus I’ve never heard them use the pronoun “Girl” in their music videos. I’m not trying to speculate or anything, I sometimes get a couple vibe from the two of them, and if they are a couple and trying to bide their time, because of the media and whatnot, I respect it and if not and they are just two regular heterosexual men, singing the song, then let me say their music is quite unique and empowering. I even felt like “Here in your arms” could be played at a gay wedding, definitely more than “am I wrong”. Am i the only one though that gets a couple vibe from them? They would make a cute couple, not gonna lie. And I’ve heard many songs before, but this one does in some weird way, sounds like it’s oriented towards gay people, I must admit that.Because once again, no pronouns are used in that song, to me that was a little bit of a red flag, I don’t know why. Just like how some artists refrain from using pronouns. However, regardless these men make great music! Thank you Nick for posting this, I thought I was the only one who though this. Maybe Nico and Vinz are first trying to win the support of the public, then when they become big, they’ll come out or something (and not the bootleg way that Frank Ocean did, although I can’t blame him, it’s going to take time for the media to embrace an openly black gay artist)
But However, I worry if that is the case, that, that could also be their downfall, because they definitely will lose a fanbase (christians, most of the black community etc), But regardless, thanks for this read, it’s let me know I wasn’t delusional when interpreting this song. lol.
Nick, Nick! Usually I’m your ride or die homie. I just haven’t taken the time to show my support in the past. But this time……..I think you reachin brah! Some may agree with you. We all are entitled to our perspectives. However, because I am who I am, my spiritual side says that God speaks to us in many ways just as beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. So to those who agree with you I ask this question: How relevant is this song to your life; Your sexuality, goals, dreams, mission in life perhaps??
To the writer of this page. You are by far a sick cunt and I like how u are very hardheaded. Your perspective, I aggre with 10000% because u didn’t just say one word u elaborated, which convinced me to believe you.
GOOD WORK MATE
