Director Spike Lee’s new film “Chi-Raq,” about Gang Violence and clashes with the police on Chicago’s south side, will be released in theaters on December 4th before heading to Amazon.
The film stars many familiar faces like Samuel L. Jackson, John Cusack, Wesley Snipes, Nick Cannon, Angela Bassett, Jennifer Hudson, Harry Lennix, Dave Chappelle, Steve Harris and D.B. Sweeney.
What makes this film so interesting to me is that given its controversial title, many expected it to be very exploitative and easily fall into the trap of being a typical “hood movie.”
Instead, it appears that we’re getting a very artistic take on topical issues in the community, much like Spike Lee accomplished in the 1980’s with films like Do The Right Thing and School Daze.
On top of that, Chi-Raq is inspired by the Greek comedy Lysistrata, a comic account of one woman’s seemingly impossible mission to end a war. In this case, the war is on the streets of Chicago.
What are your thoughts?

Man I really hope this is a winner for Spike. Fingers crossed.
This joint looks kinda HAWT!!! Sho' didn't skimp on A-list, black talent, either. I am cautiously optimistic. (Which, quite frankly, is hard to be after having seen Spike's last joint, "Da' Sweet Blood of Jesus." That flick was a f*ckin' mess!)
I'm a fan of Spike. I'll definitely be supporting this with my black dollars.
I'm actually really excited to see this. I did get a modern day School Daze vibe from the trailer. Also, withholding sex seems like an interesting way to try to stop violence lol
Looks like a great movie. I always thought it was a more of a documentary though. I wonder why people would want it banded if any thing they should want kids to see this. Many of the killings are not by adults but young teens like 14 and 15 years old.
Oh you bet I'll be at the Front row
Seat at my local theater enjoying this gem. This trailer gives me the vibe of a grow-up Dope, which was also a fantastic movie.
I am very happy of the recent development in Black cinema and tv. We're doin' it!!
Many rappers and gangbangers from Chi-Town are upset about the trailer. I look forward to seeing it though.
They need to get over it. I live in Chi but I'm not from here. The reason they are upset is because they are embarrassed and don't want to own any accountability to what's is happening in Chicago. It's a certain kind of prevalent arrogance and close mindedness that exists among SOME people here. When something bad happens, they refuse to own up to what they could have done different or better. For example, the 9 year old boy that was shot a few days ago- now they are investigating the father for gang related activity. However, a picture posted to FB or Instgrm came out of the mother posed holding a gun to her lips. Now, I am not blaming the parents for the shooting nor am in any way attempting to diminish the pain they are going through. What I want to ask is "What impact did the life the life or lived have on the climate and this event?" Things are fun until it hits home, right?
I think it's going to be an incredible and thought provoking film. It's not an insult to Chicago, but rather a wake up call.
My thoughts: great idea in theory, but black women love d@&$ k too much to go on strike. Good try by spike to influence his audience with media messages.
I'm excited about the movie … I think it will be good with an great message
