My online multiplayer experience may span over 10 years but the games I play are limited in scope; consisting of Halo, Mortal Kombat, Gears of War, Forza, Titan Fall and Injustice. Halo easily being the franchise that has the most hours spent playing under my belt. In fact, Halo 2 is the very first game I played online with others.
With online multiplayer gaming, I got to interact with other players ‘in game’ and chat with them via a headset. This was newer technology at that time and before the social media explosion.
Just like within face-to-face competitions, online matches have a lot of trash talk, which is to be expected when interacting with other males. One thing that was instantaneously noticeable was that many times the trash talk from White males was overtly racist. It didn’t matter their age…from kids to adults.
I do give the kids a pass though. When I was a kid cursing or “using bad words”, was taboo and a no-no. So when I was at home by myself, I would say curse words out loud just because I could. Once I realized my mother wasn’t going to magically materialize and smack me across my mouth, I continued to cuss whenever I wanted, outside of the ear shot of adults. For me the n-word is a curse word, so I give White kids a pass for irritatingly saying the n-word over and over and over again through anonymity of their headsets. Kids acquire questionable habits inside and outside of the home and using the n-word is no exception.
Regardless of their age however, once I grew tired of hearing it, I would just as much mute them or just take my headset off. I quickly grew content with playing without the headset and still happily engage in trash talk through instant messenger. Needless to say, I’ll occasionally get a racist message or two.
Recently I had a strange thought or one could even say, ‘feeling’ once I read my opponent’s comment where he unleashed his level one racist weaponry after losing consecutive matches in Injustice 2. Here is the pic I took with my phone of my television screen.
“Pussy” or “Spammer pussy” is casual banter within online gaming. I even would’ve been cool if he said, “bitch ass nigga”, which is just as common a saying now in America as is eating sushi for lunch or dinner. Oh no…ole’boy gotta go and hit me with the combo move and call me a nigger coon. I’m not just a nigger but also a shuck’n n’jivin coon…
I LAUGHED MY ASS OFF!
First, everyone spams and has a character they spam with. Second, why does it seem like the n-word is the instinctual go to insult for many White people? Third, (this is where my strange thought comes in) is it me or that due to their recent over usage and saturation of the word as their go to insult, that not only is it losing the sting they think it still inflicts but it has now become lame like those who still do the ‘running man’ dance?
Its Stephanie Tanner on Full House saying “don’t go there”, or “talk to the hand”, level 23 lame.
That’s why when I saw that dude took the time out to put the periods between the letters to an already lame insult; I had no choice but to laugh. Maybe it was because I was imagining the ‘claps hands together’ emoji between the letters and thinking, “oh he meant that”.
While acknowledging the insult, I was not to be distracted from the facts that lead to this back & forth and highlighted it in my reply…I’m a WINNING nigger coon! I beat his ass with Aquaman. Admittedly my retort was just as lame with the ‘devil’ on the end. I mean was I channeling Farrakan or some shit? I also want to add that the voice actor for Aquaman in the game is voiced in by the super talented Phil LaMarr…a Black man. So yeah I may be using a white character but when I use Aquaman, I’m playing like I’m fighting for my ancestors.
Closing, I want to provide some advice to the racist White male gamer; please get creative with your racial slurs. Below are a few real racial slurs that you should add to your lexicon of online multiplayer insults. This way you can feel superior when you confuse the hell outta your negroid recipients.
Gable
Golliwogg
Mosshead
Nig-nog
Powder burn
Sooty
And the double combo…
Smoked Irish / Smoked Irishman (intended to insult both Blacks and Irish)

First as an educator, I am not accepting, overlooking or condoning white folks use of the n word at any age level online.. especially when they know you are black/African American. Its either their ignorance or their parents ignorance and obviously the non-racist white privilege gift bag in this country comes with not having to consciously teach your melanin deprived babies about race.
Also @ockydub, the “you nigger” thing has happened to me a few times online playing the multi-person features of the Uno and Spades app. I clap-back to applause from other players and report it every single time. Its a sad, sad universe we live in sometimes and surfing it as a black msm makes it equally depressing…
I would like to say I'm surprised but I'm not. Calling a black person a "n****r" is the white boy's go to move anytime they get angry about something.
They do that because they they expect us to pop off and on the internet they do it because they can hide behind the keyboard.
My profile has a Spanish word so of course I'll get Latino slurs too.
I have 13 coming on 14 years of XBL under my belt and I have muted a lot of people. It was surprising at the beginning but after a while you just expect it. I'm not even interested in using my real photo because I expect it to be even worse.
That's why I now make an effort to avoid certain people online because I expect to have slurs thrown my way. I preemptively block people that are racist or who show racist tendencies before even having interactions with them. It's just easier that way.
"Second, why does it seem like the n-word is the instinctual go to insult for many White people? "
Because it's the 'instinctual go to' for many black folk. And a lot of these black folk have white homeboys, who hear them fling 'niggah' around like a ho flingin' pu$$y in Vegas. In turn, they get comfortable and start usin' the lingo, which is not checked by they black homeboys, and now we got white dudes callin' EACH OTHER 'nigga'. (see any WSHH Fight Compilation) smfh.

Ok, here’s a thought. The word “Nigga” ain’t going nowhere until black people stop giving that word power. It is the go to word not only because of the amount of energy needed for the reaction, but also because the word, no matter how you may hate it, is commonplace in our society. In the late 60’s, 70’s and 80’s we all called each other Nigga, we had much more love and respect for one another and we never fought about it..! Today however in this soft, Beyonce saturated, punk ass society where everybody want’s a reward for doing what they should be doing anyway and who’s ears are burned by the slightest slip of the potty-mouth on the cell phone standing in front of her at the Walmart, as if she is just going to die if she hears this woman say doo-doo one more time. Stop trying to tell everyone how to act or what to say.. It’s not Burger King. If we spent less time negatively reacting to this word I’ll bet that within the next 100 years, this word would have no more sting, very few people would be still be using it (as if you could make them stop using it anyway) and it would be in the history book as a word that (used to be) used to describe black slaves. You have been nobody’s slave, you have not been made to work for free and you ain’t bailed no hay..! You so offended by this word again why? (it doesn’t fit you… or does it.? LeBron James had a teachable moment in an interview showing the N-word sprayed on his gate. He gave all the power to the ass that wrote it. What he should have said was “Next time you do it, please don’t forget the word Rich. Before or after the N-word, just make sure you put it there next time So you know who I am.” (Rich Nigger/Nigger Rich). Our kids of all backgrounds also live near one another now. They all watch the same programs, wear the same clothes, have sleepovers with one another, listen to the same music (thanks MTv) and go to school together. They use this word frequently, sometimes as a friendly zinger to one another, but most times as a term of endearment. Hell, some don’t even know that they might be saying something offensive. After all, all of their friends speak the same word(s) no matter what the ethnic background. It is only when someone steps in and gives all of this attention to that one word, recharging it once yet again and telling these white, yellow and red kids that they can’t ever say these words (as if they are actually going to take heed. ) Bottom line, the word “Nigger” is here to Stay, like luggage.. So get over it. You can’t tell anyone how to talk nor what to say. (That is until these buttersoft folk wake up and stop becoming so sensitive about shit that in the grand scheme of progression means either responding smartly and sharply, putting them on defense or winding up held down by security because of your actions) You can choose to respond like Watasha nem in the beauty shop or cleverly shoot back to kill, shutting the opposition down. Thanks for trying that Ocky as opposed to getting crazy at something that you can’t control unless you take control, (of yourself). Deuces..!!
See this is why I couldn'tdo that chattin' back and forth with people. When I was younger playing wrestling on my cousins' N64 with my cousins, one of them would get mad a throw the stick to the wall and break it. People take this stuff too seriously and allow themselves to create actions they shouldn't even fathom doing.
Well TBH very few conversation actually happens. Hell on games where you're on a team and communicating would be beneficial to win people don't.
Fighting games are more personal I think because it's 1 on 1. Before when you'd be standing right next to the person they'd be mad if they lost but wouldn't have the balls to say anything to you in your face. Hell the humiliation was even worse then if you had a crowd around the machine at the arcade.
When I was at my peak, it was nothing for me to have a constant consecutive wins and because I was pretty emotion less people would not know how to take it. I had people at my college groan when I walked in to the union to play several mid 90s fighting games.
